Title: I'll be meeting Franco Nero in a few months...
Post by: The Hunchback on 05 Dec 2007 - 18:50
Franco Nero will be coming to the miami beach cinematech in April. I'll be hosting a portion of the "Italian film festival" where Nero will be given a life-time achievement award.

It's still a long way off but I was wondering if anybody had any questions they'd like to ask him?
I can ask for you.

I may make the jaunt down there myself if he does plan to appear.

Me and Paul met him a few years ago.

When he walked in the room with his suit and sunglasses on it was like god himself had walked in.

Very polite and nice man to talk to, as whas Enzo G Castellari who we met at the same time ::)

I was starstruck! Only happened with Nero (fucking hell it's really him), not With Fulci, Deodato or anyone, just Nero. (and maybe a bit when i saw Jennifer Tilly 8))

Didn't Jay organise it?
The Ritzy Bixton used to show some great films on their all-nighters back in the late 80's,they were very cool about drinking and smoking in there as well which made all the difference when you were stuck in an uncomfortable seat until 7 or 8 in the morning :D

Well not only that but this event will finally give me a reason to call (I've had his house and cell phone number for ages!) Tomas Milian and get him out of hiding. Maybe if I entice him with some cash (or a new beanie hat) he might show up to Nero's ceremony.

Either that or I could get him for his own event (which the cinematech has been interested in doing as of late).

do you have anymore information on this event?  I will definitely get down there if Franco Nero is showing up (and MOST DEFINITELY if Tomas Milian shows!)
thanks for any information!   :P

Yeah, I co-arranged it. Suffice to rumours, it was a 50/50 thing: lost around 3K+. But it was worth it just get Nero and Castellari. And to see so many happy faces. And free beer!  :P

Nice one Jay,any chance of something similar again in the future?

Quite possibly. I have been seriously thinking about it only recently. Who would you like to be the feature of the event? Alain Delon would be a corker.

I have footage of the Nero/Castellari event. I'll get it on disc, and if it's good, I'd be more than happy to pass around (like some bad disease).

Delon would be very cool or get Luc Merenda over from Paris as he doesn't seem to mind talking about his career,be interesting to hear some stories about it.

Yeah, Luc Merenda would really cool and like Stephen Says he'd be well up for it.

A cinema to Luc Merenda? Okay. What movies and how many souls do you think would go for it...?

Alain Delon. I have his details, so...

April is still a long ways away.
I'll certainly have more by March.

Keep watching the skies.

I figured for something of this stature (an achievement award for a great Italian film icon) would require more planning, etc, so 4 months away didn't seem like that far off in my mind.  But, I'll be eagerly awaiting the details...thanks!

True but Nero isn't the main attraction (believe it or not), it's an entire Italian Film festival. So I'm expecting Nero's award to be a slap dash project.

I'd be interested about where things are with the new western him and Castellari were rumoured to be working on - there were a few things flying around last year about this - the title was supposed to be something like 'gli implacabili'...

I already had that question planned of course. I don't expect anything new though. That movie has been in development hell for several years now.

Hunchback if you manage to do something with Tomas Milian alone (not sure where you're based), I'm there.

As far as Franco, a few questions:

Of his movies which have not yet been released on American/UK dvd, which ones would he like to see be released?

What is his opinion on A QUIET PLACE IN THE COUNTRY?

Would he consider doing another thriller with Vanessa now?

And finally,

How does it feel to have Enzo beat him up in so many of their movies together? ;)

thanks Hunchback.

Milian also seems like a possibility. For the moment.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Okay, Nero will be here within a week. Milian can't make it because he is heading to NYC to visit his son Tomaso.

Send your Franco Nero questions.

I'm only accepting 10 because I want to get my questions in as well and my time with him will most probably be limited.

Post questions here... first come first serve.

Probably an obvious one, but...

"Looking back, are there any of your films that you'd want to go back and reshoot?"

Thanks...

Update:

It happened. The Hunchback was a real chum and allowed me to interview Franco Nero for my feature-length doc on Italian crime films.

(The Hunchback, who like me, kinda straddles the fence between film historian and filmmaker, was even the B-camera operator for the shoot.)

The interview was great, full of information and entertaining anecdotes. Best of all, I finally got to hear Mr. Nero's opinion of his greatest "imitator," Maurizio Merli.

More details as the doc progresses...

I guess he was none too flattering of his rival? My wife and I interviewed Enzo (G!) Castellari a few years ago and he was less than kind to old Merli. He described him as someone who started out his film career with good intentions but then let the fame get to his head (...Or something like that.)

Enzo also mentioned the western he was meant to be doing, rattling off a long (long) list of celebrated American actors tied to the project. The good man QT was also mentioned as being key to the project, iirc. Given how long it's taken Quentin to remake 'The Inglorious Bastards' I guess we can't rule anything out just yet.

One day (when hell freezes over...) I'll rip and subtitle the 2 hour(+) interview we did. The problem is that (on playback) it all comes across as so (incredibly) amateurish that I'm not exactly keen to release it in it's present state. Bear in mind I'd also not seen many of his films at that point, the only one I could really talk about was Keoma - and I hadn't seen that since I was about 15 or 16 (I'm 31 now). I still have his son Andrea's e-mail address and I'd like to go back and finish it off. Here's hoping!

During dinner Nero told me that Enzo's western project might get funding within the year but he also told me not to hold my breath. " Nobody in Italy is willing to back up a western/action picture directed by an old man"...Nero's own words.

Sigh... Guess they think age is hinderance.

Glad you had a good time Hunchback.
