Title: The Etruscan Kills Again / L' Etrusco uccide ancora (Armando Crispino, 1972)
Post by: demented_uk on 14 Dec 2007 - 19:48
I have just finished dubbing an English VHS track to the excellent German DVD release of this underrated giallo.  The quality is an immense improvement over the Eurovista release which had very poor picture and sound quality, was missing footage and the DVD would skip to the main menu during the all important final scene.

I do not know why people look down on this film.  Okay, it does have some terrible dialogue ("does an Etruscan burial ground turn you on?") but I really like the supernatural undertones and it is certainly different to other gialli from this particular period.  Ayone else notice how Riz Ortolani's music is reminiscent of his main theme from CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST?  Alex Cord, future star of AIRWOLF, is a little bit wooden in the title role and his tash became an annoying obstacle when trying to synch the audio.

I have included some screenshots from my fandub and also from Eurovista release so that you can see the difference in quality.

My next composite will either be ANIMA PERSA (16x9, Italian audio with English subtitles) or I will continue the Etruscan theme with MURDER IN AN ETRUSCAN CEMETARY (English audio).

That's very funny Oli, I am not a huge fan of the movie but I would certainly give it another chance by watching your fandub! Looks excellent.

Is the grey haired guy in this grab the same guy who wakes up with a horses head in his bed in 'The Godfather'? looks just like him.

I interviewed Mr. Cord for the '70s Tough Guy encyclopedia I started writing (but am now kinda-sorta on hiatus with).

He didn't have much to say about this film, as he seems to recall his Western roles most fondly of all (he's a big equestrian enthusiast).

I know Alex Cord was perhaps not a major player on the '70s action-star scene, but damn if he doesn't have a cool voice and oddly cool screen presence. And if anyone needs convincing of his acting chops, see his maniacal performance in THE LAST GRENADE opposite Stanley Baker.

Well he does have an on-screen presence, that is for sure, but perhaps it is the poor dialogue that lets him down in this film.  Always thought he was cool in AIRWOLF with that white suit and eye patch.

In general, or about Alex Cord in particular?

I'm trying to save most of my anecdotal gold -- at least the stuff that's never been uttered before -- for the book.

But I interviewed Bo Svenson for the project, and when he checked in with me a few months ago, I told him of the book's postponement and suggested we go ahead and run his intvw in SHOCK CINEMA magazine. So Bo's intvw should be in the next SC, and he's got some good revelations. Is that mag distributed in the U.K.?

Great, many thanks - please include your new release as well!!  ;)

I have started working on Che fanno i nostri supermen tra le vergini della giungla? using the Italian DVD and Swedish VHS. It seems to be a silly film but I have special place in my heart for superheroes.  :-X

This might be a silly question, but regarding the fandubs you guys make, is there any way I can get my hands on some of them? ;D
Unfortunately I don't have much to trade (pretty much all my dvds are commercially available DVDs), the rare films I owned were mostly in VHS and I gradually lost pretty much all of them during the years (that's what happens when you have a younger brother that deletes your italian horror tapes to record Dragon Ball Z episodes... ???).

Also, any tips you might want to share with a newbie (software used, ...)? I would like to try and make something myself one of these days...  ;)

This should be good! I already have the German disc as part of the Brian Edgar Wallace Collection Vol. 3 - together with a nice-looking version of Jess Franco's THE CORPSE PACKS HIS BAGS and a cut, hideous-looking German version of THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE. It looks gorgeous and made me appreciate the film a great deal more than throught watching the sub-par Eurovista disc.

Watched Demented UK's fandub this morning, excellent job mate! Really enjoyed the film, it's not as bad as I was lead to believe. Really well made and looks gorgeous via this print.

This is certainly not a bad film. I at least like it a great deal more than the same director's AUTOPSY. ETRUSCAN is an atmospheric giallo with has a good cast, great Ortolani score, and some effectively grisly kills. And there's lots of great J&B action too!  :P

Good fun isn't it?  Glad you enjoyed it, have not had chance to watch it myself yet, hope there were no synch errors.

Btw, I am now simultaneously working on several projects:

L'ALPAGUEUR
LE MANS - SCORCIATOIA PER L'INFERNO
I CONTRABBANDIERI DI SANTA LUCIA
I FANTASTICI 3 SUPERMEN
CHE FANNO I NOSTRI SUPERMEN TRA LE VERGINI DELLA JUNGLA?

I watched Demented UK's fandub over Christmas. Maybe I was too busy enjoying the film, but I didn't notice any synch errors. If you haven't already seen it, it's well worth watching.

I have the French SECAM tape titled OVERTIME.  It is cropped to about 1.85:1 and features an entirely different music score than the English version.  I don't know why they did this but most of the cues I've been able to identify are from Lucio Fulci films (the end title theme is from HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY).  Since Fulci's films were made in the eighties, I'm guessing either the film did not have a French release in the seventies or something happened to the French tracks or there was some sort of music rights issue like the American HBO video releases of certain AIP product.

The fandub of this is terrific.  I knew there were jumps in the Eurovista print's video and audio but I didn't realize how much of the opening narration was missing including a line midway through the credits when Cord is looking through the scope into the tomb that made no sense in the Eurovista version because the middle of it was missing.

Was there a soundtrack release for this film?  Soundtrack Collector only lists it under the title "The Dead Are Alive" which suggests that they have no idea that its even an Italian film.

I looked at the CR and fandub with the same software.  the difference is there.  TVs have their own picture settings which is why some discs have those THX optimizer guides.  a lot of transfers (be it HD mastered or VHS-sourced) look sharper and sometimes brighter on an interlaced TV than they do on a progressive monitor and some HDTVs have noise reduction controls and other stuff that might be adjustable or might be on by default.

Try sellers at amazon.com (see link below).

I bought a copy yesterday from a seller called the exterminator for $15 US and change, shipping included.  I also bought PRIMAL RAGE from the same seller today for $16 US and change.

For those that don't live in the States, many sellers will ship internationally.

Just to make sure I'm reading this right....  the German DVD (part of their Edgar Wallace series) includes an additional 20 seconds during one of the sex scenes?  Has this footage turned up anywhere else, like the Italian tapes?  Or is the German version an exclusive edit akin to their releases of SOLANGE and 7 BLOODSTAINED ORCHIDS?

i'd like to hear your advise on amazon USAs marketplace for those living abroad. im in the UK, and the only times ive looked at it, the shipping rates have been extortionate, clearly outweigh the competition on item prices.
