Title: SPAGHETTI-HEROES: DJANGO - SARTANA - RINGO book
Post by: K August on 27 Jan 2008 - 17:13
Hi everyone,

a poster at the SWWB just mentioned a new German Book called Spaghetti Heroes which will be bundled with a couple of dvds.

I can't figure out if the English language will extend to the inside of the book?

Umberto Lenzi - 1968
Pistolets pour un Massacre
Street Date 31/03/2008

"RINGO – No man was faster with a gun. DJANGO – He was the toughest hero in the history of the western film.. SARTANA – His game was killing – his stakes were six cartridges and a life. This book tells the exciting story of these heroes and their companions, „Gringo“ and „Rocco“. It takes the reader along on an exciting and entertaining trip to accompany the heroes of the Spaghetti Western on their most dangerous adventures. Numerous impressive, action packed and rare pictures enhance this book which will give the fans of the Italian western an opportunity to meet „their“ favourite screen hero again and thrill those movie lovers who couldn’t cotton up with the Spaghetti Western yet. In any case, however, this book is a unique, ostensive, and essential work of reference on the Spaghetti Western, and western film lovers and those who want to become fans of the western genre are going to enjoy it.

No idea apart from the fact it states "260 pages, en anglais et en allemand" (260 pages, in English and German) on the French version of the linked to page...

I'd hold off until it gets released before committing to buy though.

Thanks Jonny,

I missed that completely.

My Blind ma'am title is more than a bit accurate today.  :-*

Since I'm a Sartana and Django fan, I'll ask Tony from xploited if he'll carry this.  I don't have either of the films bundled with it so depending on the price I may just jump.  For the imagery alone, it may be worth it.

It appears to be a ltd ed with 4 different covers and 500 only of each with 2 films-Lenzi's 'Pistol for a Hundred Coffins' and Margheriti's 'Vengeance',noticed the same company also put out the LES DEMONS fotonovel booklet that came free with the X-Rated dvd.
I'll ask André at Sin'Art about it in a day or 2.

Have you ever ordered from DTM?

I've ordered from them a few times and everything's been fine. Not sure what they are like shipping to the US though.

I think Paul had a problem with his 'Beatrice Cenci' DVD not turning up. Though from what I can remember he never got onto them about it.

Just heard from Tony:

Xploited will stock this in late March. No price yet.

Thanks for the information gentlemen, appreciate it.  :-X

BEATRICE CENCI never turned up from DTM, though I was never charged. I think it was because I ordered something else at a sale price and they ended up running out of stock. I since ordered a copy of FOUR FLIES and there was no problem with that...

Just saw this 260-page tome on Xploited - apologies if it's been mentioned before. German and English text and includes DVD of Lenzi's A Gun For 100 Graves. Here's the link:

The book sounds rather interesting but unless the DVD has been remastered it is quite missable and was released on its own a while back - my review: Pistol for 100 Coffins (http://mondo-esoterica.net/Pistola%20per%20cento%20bare.html)

I'm more interested in the book, the film itself i just look at as a little bonus.

Anyone else get this book? The price is a bit high but I was too curious. It`s an obvious labour of love, enthusiastic reviews of the various Ringo/Sartana/Django films and gorgeously illustrated with lots and lots of posters/lobby cards/stills etc. This really is a well-designed book, it`s probably even more glossy than the Glittering Images trilogy. The reviews aren`t scholarly or anything, more along the lines of well written, thoughtful commentary from an enthusiastic fan - and I think it works fine here. It`s of particular interest to read a German perspective on these films (as I`m sure many know, an ass-load of unrelated sw were retitled in Germany to be Django films), for instance I learned that when doing the German dubbing for them lots of corny jokes and puns were put in the dialogue, even if it was outrageously inappropriate for the film. It`s amazing how many films were retitled as Django movies - GENTLEMAN KILLER and MASSACRE TIME for example! I don`t always agree with the author`s opinions naturally - he absolutlely hates REQUIEM FOR A GRINGO (or FOR DJANGO in Germany!), an offbeat sw I`m really fond of, but that`s okay it`s still a fun read. The dvd had A GUN FOR 100 GRAVES (English audio) and VENGEANCE (German audio only for this one), I already had both but the book was still worth it.

PS - MPW also has a nifty looking book on cannibal films, even more crazy expensive than the sw tome. Thankfully this one is German text only so I`ve been able to fight off the temptation so far. Over 1000 photos though, you know this one`s a stunner too.

Thanks for the info, Andrew.  With the steep price tag I was wondering the content before purchasing.  Is it hardcover/with color pictures?

Gary, yeah it`s a hardcover and 98% of the pictures are in color. There`s a whole bunch of German posters and lobby cards I hadn`t seen before, many of the posters are full page too. There`s a massive amount of pictures in the book, it`s a classy work. The price is steep I know, but if you`re interested I think it`s well worth it. There`s a huge number of films reviewed in depth too, I`ve spent several evenings reading it. You get the oddly translated phrase here and there but overall it`s well-written (or translated). The author`s enthusiasm has made me pull out some films I hadn`t watched in ages.

Fair play, that looks lovely. It looks like it's the Spaghetti Western equivalent of Tim Lucas' Bava book.

Finally got the DVD case for the bonus disc that comes with the book.  Here's what it looks like (just scanned it for dvdaf):
It's a smaller 'German style' dvd case, not like the giant limited edition ones, but the same size as a normal dvd case.  Looks pretty cool with the blue letters on white background.  I had to contact the company by email to order, and they only take credit card...no paypal.

The pics look interesting, maybe I'll get myself a copy, too!
But somehow I doubt that it can bring sth. new to the table because there are 2 superb German books on Spaghettis:

-"Für ein paar Leichen mehr" by Ulrich P. Bruckner
-"Willkommen in der Hölle" by Christian Kessler

Both essential I'd say! :)

MOST of the prints in that book look great,  but not all. There's some pretty obvious digitial blockiness in some places.   (I didn't notice nearly as much in the Cannibal book... anyway..)   The writing in there is uhm..  "fanzine style" I guess..  not the kind of thing you'd expect in a $50 hardcover full color book..  but if you're a SW fan  it's fun and impressive as hell.    A lot less serious than the WAI books.

as an aside DO get the Cannibal book (too) if given half a chance.  One of the coolest movie books I've ever seen!
