Title: Zabriskie Point (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1970)
Post by: Ben Cobb on 12 Feb 2008 - 17:19
This is one of my absolute favourites. I saw a gorgeous new print at the NFT two years ago and (stupidly) have been eagerly awaiting its DVD release ever since. I'm still waiting... I can only presume that there's some rights issue with MGM or something. Anyone have any info?

Warner own the rights to this one, now - it's an MGM title but most of the back catalogue was bought by Ted Turner in the late 80s and his company was later swallowed up by Time/Warner.

There's a Russian DVD. Fullscreen though. I've never seen this and intend to wait it out for the DVD. however:  it's sometimes shown on TCM in Widescreen...

To bad Warner didn't put this out when they did their DVD of BLOW-UP.

Side not, LA NOTTE is due out from Masters of Cinema in the UK.

It's screening in the US on TNT in Widescreen some time soon.

Time/Warner... That explains it! Yes, I caught it a few months back on TCM, which is what reminded me. It was a nice widescreen print. Got excited when I first heard about the Russian DVD and then I learnt it was fullscreen.

Was sent a press release about Eureka's La Notte today. Looking forward to it as I've never seen it.

I just had look over at Amazon.de and it is indeed listed for April 17th, with English options. Good price too.

Excellent - I've been wanting this for years; never even seen the flick, having held out for a widescreen version. Just ordered this from amazon.de, cost just under 16 Euros, delivered  :-X

Anyone else order this? I placed an order with Amazon.de around ten days ago, though the official release date is tomorrow (17th April). It shipped yesterday  ::)

Really looking forward to seeing this.

Turns out that despite the Amazon.de claims of being 16:9 and the anamorphic menus the German release is indeed 4:3 AND CROPPED!

That's outrageous - I deliberately held off buying the Russian disc because it was fullscreen. I'm really, really annoyed  :-[

Just picked up my copy of the German disc from the post office. Pissed off to find it's fullscreen.

Seem to remember rights issues with some of the music in this print. BBC2 have shown the original version letterboxed.

Warner Home Video in the US are releasing a new, 16x9 remastered ZABRISKIE POINT DVD on the 26th May.  It's part of the fourth volume of their 'Director's Showcase' box sets and is packaged with new DVD's of Cronenberg's M. BUTTERFLY, Boorman's BEYOND RANGOON, a new director's cut of Hal Ashby's LOOKING TO GET OUT and a new director's cut (40 minutes longer) of Hugh Hudson's REVOLUTION.  I'm assuming it'll also be available seperately for folks that don't want to add the just okay-ish Cronenberg etc. films to their collections.  Bout fuckin' time Warner - do THE DEVILS next you slowcoach bastards!!

I finally got around to seeing this last night and was really impressed. It's certainly a film that's light on plot, but what it lacks in narrative it certainly makes up for in symbolism. However, the film's biggest asset is its photography and use of location. It's been a long time since I've seen a film that looks as gorgeous as this does and I am so glad that I waited to watch the letterboxed version.

Yeah, it was the French release, which is non-anamorphic. That said, as it's PAL, it still looks very nice indeed, even zoomed to crop the letterboxing. Had I known Warner US was releasing there's, I would have waited but will not be upgrading, for the moment, at least.

There's some speculation about the imminent Warner US release on the IMDB boards, BTW. People are worried that because it has been anounced as being 'R' rated, that it will be cut. Probably just rumours but I'd say wait for the reviews (DVD Beaver would be a good place to check out, as a couple of the guys there love the film and have reviewed every release thus far) before ordering.

Yeah, agree with all the above comments - its a great movie and hugely underated too... I've have a great affection for the film cos it introduced me to The Grateful Dead and the music of John Fahey. And the eerie Pink Floyd tune over the front credits is one of the best things the Floyd have done...

Has this now been released in the UK? It went through the BBFC again in August of this year, and there are copies on ebay which appear to be of British origin, but it doesn't seem to be available from any of the normal outlets. It's as if it was released and deleted in the blink of an eye.

I've not seen a UK release, but that said, it may have snuck out as a retailer exclusive.

You're absolutely right, Paul. It's a HMV exclusive - and an immediately ordered one, at that.

That clears that up then. Cheers Mr Chivers!

I have the French disc which is non-anamorphic. I know that the US disc is enhanced but it came out after I bought the French DVD.

Yep, mine turned up yesterday actually. Interested parties can rest assured that it is anamorphic, although the packaging doesn't make any mention of this.
