Post by: fdsmedia on 19 Feb 2008 - 07:00
I have the Italian DVD release but I might upgrade to the upcoming Neo Publishing disc:

Word to the wise: the UK disc on Prism (or the earlier Metrodome release) is out of print. If you've not got one, get it before the eBayers start to demand ridiculous prices.

Since this new French DVD is 1.85:1 and anamorphic I don't see why anyone should buy the inferior OOP UK disc...  :D

This is a definate buy for me though i've a feeling there'll be burnt in French subs on the English track as with all the other Neo Publishing releases including their excellent digipack of Reeves' WITCHFINDER GENERAL,should be a very nice transfer though knowing Neo.
I've also got the Italian disc on Gargoyle/Millenium Storm(as IL KILLER DI SATANA)which has the Italian language track and a trailer, picture quality is ok but as it's such a cool film a double-dip is in order.

Probably because the UK disc was dirt cheap, mate.

I love this film and have done even before I ever actually saw it. As a kid I was obsessed with a still of it in the 'Pictorial History of Horror Movies' book, published by Hamlyn. The picture in question was a shot of Boris burnt to death on his kitchen floor. It's a disturbing little film with a great non-monster performance by Boris. I used to live in the block where the swimming pool scene was filmed.

I wonder why this wasn't included on AB's TIGON set since there was significant coverage on the film in the Michael Reeves doc on the WITCHFINDER GENERAL disc (itself a port from the already existing UK release on another label).

Wasn't the UK release anamorphic?

The recent PRISM release (from the METRODOME dvd) is doing the rounds in the pounshops in the UK, i got one the other week, but haven't opened it yet.
I think i saw this movie years ago (is it the one that ends in the explosion?)

Prism is Paul's favourite label!

Yes it's being prepared for release by Dark Sky. Here's something from Fangoria about an interview with David Gregory:

"In addition, Gregory reveals that he “just did a commentary yesterday for Michael Reeves’ THE SHE BEAST with [actor] Ian Ogilvy, [producer] Paul Maslansky and amazingly, Barbara Steele. Now, it has to be said that Barbara didn’t want to come, because she had absolutely no memory of the film and thought it was utter rubbish when she watched it. However, we persuaded her to come along to chime in about the Italian industry at the time and her status as a horror star etc., so that was fun.”

Be cool to hear Steele talking about the Italian film industry, bet she has some great anecdotes and stories.

Didn't she only do one or two days work on the film? That makes it understandable that she has no real recollection of it.

Yes indeed and by all accounts Reeves worked her like mad to get his money's worth.  ::)

Yeah, I've read it. Very in depth as Mook says. There's also a US book about Reeves. I read them both one after the other. The UK book is better but the US book is worth a read too.

I have the Mterodome release, but this new DVD looks interesting. I love the idea of frustrated old age wanting to express itself through young flesh, it's quite a bold and daring statement. Plus the fact it stars the peerless Boris Karloff. What's not to like? There's more layers to this movie than first perceived. You need to see this several times to fully appreciate it.

I'd also recommend seeking out Targets.

What are the specs on the EMS release? The monitor I'm on here at work is knackered so I can't really judge those grabs, though the EMS one looks brighter..

Anamorphic widescreen 1.85:1, German audio, English audio (with forced German subtitles). Yes it's definitely brighter, but the colours look slightly more faded.

plus it comes in a nice slipcase like all the discs of the series "der phantastische film". Insinde there's an amaray with a different artwork and a booklet, though this is in German only.
Image quality isn't excellent - mostly too soft, but acceptable. zero extras, except for the trailer and image gallery. there are some additional trailers for other e-m-s-dvds, including "blood and black lace", "Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel", and "La belle et la bete".
Other titles in the same series include "Night of the big heat", "Asylum", "The Uncanny" (yawn), "Black Toment", "Devils of Darkness" and "The Flesh and Blood Show". Quite nice, really.

Also DDD has nearly every Dark Sky Disc on sale right now.  Lot's of Euro-cult, Horror, Cult, etc.  $19.95 discs are $10.86 and $14.95 discs are $8.14. (Again, free shipping included for those stateside)

Here's a link to Dark Sky's catalogue at their webstore.

Thanks for posting that, I love that cover....it features Susan George on front and back sleeve!
Susan is often not mentioned in conection with the film, one of her first film roles.

I'm almost sure the opening scene with Karloff walking to the shop was filmed in Murray Street, just off Agar Grove in Camden.

I think that you've got that mixed up with the German DVD release of The Curse of the Crimson Altar, haven't you?

It's a really good film but I never got around to buying the UK DVD either before it went OOP. It was on BBC2 a little while ago so I recorded that but I'll be interested to know how the Warner disc looks compared to the old UK one.

I have the old UK DVD on the Prism Leisure label. I haven't watched it for a number of years but I seem to recall it being pretty good with a decent selection of special features. I seem to recall that there were quite a few scratches of instances of dirt on the print, and I assume that the original negatives were not utilised for the transfer.

Odeon have mentioned on their Facebook page that they'll be releasing this on BD.  ::)

Seems they have this, Curse of the Crimson Altar, Night of the Big Heat, Black Torment and Island of Terror all on their way. Tremendous!
