He'll be a member of the international jury.
Any of you folks on here gonna be there?

damn this is tempting...........
-
You should try and get an interview with him Captain :'(
-
If i had the money i'd be jumping on the ferry or eurostar!
-
You should try and get an interview with him Captain :'(
I probably will...poor man, won't even know what hit him! Like William Lustig last year.
There's also talk that Romero and Argento are gonna be there.
-
Make sure you ask him questions about his crime films if you get to interview him! He has already provided more than enough info on his cannibal and horror movies.

I've read that he's sick of answering questions about his horror films esp. CANNIBAL FEROX :-\
-
Sure thing guys...I'm also more interested in his crime films. I make sure to post a link of the footage when it's available. I can ask for the complete interview too. Last year with Bill Lustig, they only used a couple of minutes, they left all the good stuff out, he must've talked over an hour, about Joe Spinell, Sharon Mitchell, his view about the movie business...and so on. It was like I heard great music for the first time!
If Lenzi doesn't talk english i'll give the questions to our sound guy, he's italian and have Lenzi sign some sleeves and stuff.
-
I think Lenzi speaks English almost fluently.
-
i hope you can slip in a giallo/carroll baker question as well, another underrated area in lenzi's work, i love his gialli and crime films.
-
I don't think he likes talking about Carroll Baker. Bit of a touchy subject.

:-\
Just looking at a great interview he did with Is It Uncut? magazine from 2004 where Paul Brown asked him about her and he said-"I was in love with her, that's all....(indicating he has said enough on the subject)".
-
I think Captain's made of stronger stuff than Paul Brown so he might have more luck pushing the matter.
-
"I was in love with her, that's all...."
wow i didnt know that! i'm actually a bit touched by that quote! :(
-
How about this for the end of the interview "enough about the violence Mr Lenzi, let's talk about love, what's up with you that Carroll Baker broad?" ;D
Seriously though, I work with a director, he comes up with the questions and all that, but like always, I ask what I want anyways. But Like i said before, they edit it to get everything right according to the script of the day to air it for the viewers who don't have a clue to begin with.
Oh they did loved the Jean Claude Van Damme special! Little Belgian prick was so special and coked up he wouldn't even arm wrestle me! Should've asked him about Chuck Zito.
-
When are you meeting Lenzi, captain ?
I'm doing an interview friday 4/04, wondering what I'm letting myself get into - judging from the Lenzi interviews I've seen, the guy is mental !
-
I'm there on the "zombie day" for sure that's the 28th I think, The following monday too for THE DEVIL DARED ME TO and the rest of the dates are not set yet, should know this by monday. We're gonna shoot 5 to 6 days there this year. Let's meet up and drink some of that awfull troll beer.

"Awful troll beer?" How can you say that? The Belgians have the finest beers known to man. I lived in the Netherlands for a bit and was always quaffing the multitude of Trappist monk beer. Those beers are strong, so no wonder monks have vows of silence - they would slur if they spoke.
-
Well - I've lived in Belgium for 35 years and that 'Troll Beer' is awful ;D
-
haha...yeah almost 33 years for me here and trust me, I know my beer!
-
Could someone please send me a scan of that Lenzi interview from IS IT UNCUT #17 ?
Only written interview I have with the man is in the SPAGHETTI NIGHTMARES book, like to read up a bit more to prepare for the interview.
-

I can do it for you next week if nobody else can do it for you. Remind me on Monday.
-
That would be great - thanks ! ::)
-
Ok... I've scanned the interview for Wim, does anybody else want a copy?
-
Sure thing, I'd love a read of it. :'(
-

Sure man!
-
Just got back from Brussels - talked for an hour with Lenzi - was absolutely brilliant !
The man is more laid-back than the Lenzi we know from the interviews - didn't constantly try to manifest himself. Maybe his illness of a few years back made him see things from another perspective.
It's going to be hard to write it as an interview, though - will take some time.
-
Excellent news Wim. Really looking forward to reading your interview now. :'(
-
Here's a teaser :
Ah! For me Orgasmo is one of the best of my movies, and I'm very happy because next week for the first time the movie will be on Italian online television, and I think after two months it will be out on dvd.
Wrote about a fourth of it by now - my ears ache from wearing my headphones and my head aches from listening to Lenzi's - and my - heavily accented English.
On re-listening to it - it's not that good - he doesn't say much we didn't already know, and I had a hard time asking the right questions.

Wim, don't get dis-heartened. You spent an hour talking to one of my FAVOURITE MOVIE DIRECTORS...
I don't know about anyone else but I'm really keen to hear about what you guys talked about for the hour you had together!
:)
-
I'm looking forward to it too. I'm sure it'll be all good.
-
Here's one of my spoilers:
"ah...today's cinema is shit".
Haha, Wim, where were you?????? :P
-
Did you do an interview on camera?
I walked around the place for an hour before doing the interview, but after I went straight to the station.
-
Wim very kindly got Umberto Lenzi to sign my 'Death Dealers' (Napoli Violenta) Quad poster...

How's the transcription of your conversation going?
Almost forty minutes is done - will still take a few hours.
I have a terrible hangover at the moment - not sure if I'm up to it today. :-*

Terrible troll beer hangover here too!
Yes, the interview should be online in two weeks, was great talking to the man! Signed a bunch of posters too.
Looking forward to the interview, mine will be edited like crazy and i'm sure will be very short!

Any info from the interview that you'd care to share with us, a teaser of what's to come?
Did you ask him about Merli? The recycled car chase footage?

I'll probably finish it soon - having a hard time at the moment because it's not always easy to understand Lenzi - it's slow going.
I asked some about Merli, but he didn't say much. The car chase footage - I didn't have the chance to ask - since they're expensive to shoot and the three films share their producer, that's probably the explanation.
-

So how did you conduct the interview? Were you both speaking English?

Yes - in English. His accent is sometimes very hard to understand and - especially the last twenty minutes - there is a lot of background noise. First half hour went easily, but afterwards it gets harder to work out what's been said exactly. Might have to drop a few things - but I'm on it!
-
Nice one, never even heard Lenzi speaking English. Look forward to reading your final article Wim. :'(

I am jealous! You should be proud of this moment ::)
-
Nice one, never even heard Lenzi speaking English.
He does a commentary track in English with John Morghen on the Grindhouse CANNIBAL FEROX DVD.
-
Don't have that DVD. Might just have to get it, is that the comm track where Morghen has hardly a good word to say about the film?
-
That's the one. If memory serves me right then he actually says, 'I hate this film'.
-
His English is atrocious lol
-
That's the one. If memory serves me right then he actually says, 'I hate this film'.
I bet he doesn't say things like that now he's doing the convention circuit and getting $20+ a signature on 'Ferox' merchandise eh?
-
I'd think he probably does. He always comes across as an honest, self-deprecating kind of guy in every interview I've read.
-
Good to know, I've not heard or read anything to do with Giovanni for a while now. He was posting on DVD Maniacs last year and seemed like he'd started to embrace his past life as a Horror movie actor and started to appreciate the kudos fans were giving him... From what I'd read before this he always seemed to distance himself from these films...
-
Just finished working on the interview - you can read it here :

Great interview. Interesting stuff about Dirty Pictures, and nice talk about Milian and Merli.
-
Nice one Wim! Thanks for that :P
-
Thanks everyone - I had a great time doing it, hope it's of some use to others.
Feel free to link to it on other boards.
-
Great interview, Wim – there's some brilliant information in there about Milian especially, and I hadn't read that anywhere else before. Well done, mate. ;)
-
Interesting stuff, Wim. :P :-X
-
Wished we would've taped Wim's interview. Mine's already cut to a 3 minute segment about Cannibal Ferox. Typical! But oh well...Atleast I got a picture with him.

I've got moments!

Nice photo Captain. ::)

Met up with Lenzi again today ! Next time we meet, we'll probably exchange adoption papers :-\
He had a presentation of his book in an Italian bookshop/bistro in Brussels. Very up-market, right in the heart of the European quarter and catering mainly to the rich Italian eurocrats working in the area.
I was a bit early, and he seemed glad I showed up - felt great. Lenzi was sitting at a table eating cheese and olives, drinking red wine, talking in Italian with some people, I couldn't really follow the conversation so I just sat there - drinking expensive Grappa.
Afterwards about twenty people showed up, and he did a monologue about his book, and talked for about ten minutes about his career - all in Italian so I could only understand the main gist. In English he's often at a loss for words - but in Italian the man still is a manic force of nature - going on and on without stopping for breath - great to watch. He did a mocking impersonation of Carroll Baker in a silly voice about her being confused playing in two movies called 'Paranoia' and got in a frenzy about the mistakes made by the Berlusconi-government - "Bravo Bravo", sounding from the audience.
-

nice one Wim, i'd love to meet Lenzi ::)
-
Added a link to the interview at DVD Trash for you too! ::)
-
Great interview! Especially the bits on FROM CORLEONE TO BROOKLYN. I agree with everything Lenzi says about this one. Great movie. Wish he would write some sort of memoir or reviews to go more in depth on these movies productions.
-
Poster arrived back from Brussels this morning, thanks a million Wim! :P

Very nice ;)
-
Yep very nice indeed. I'm jealous Jonny.
-
Nice one ::)
-
No problem Jonny - Lenzi was impressed by the poster, by the way.
He was kind enough to answer five additional questions I had by e-mail today - I've integrated these in the interview at places that seemed most appropriate - he kept his answers short, though :

Really cool interview! Nice read! Umberto shouldn't be drinking whiskey at his age :) Wish he could make another film...
