Title: Short Night Of The Glass Dolls (Aldo Lado, 1972)
Post by: Jonny on 19 Mar 2008 - 11:43
aka 'La corta notte delle bambole di vetro'

Just bought the German KOCH Media DVD of this, haven't had chance to watch it through but here's some comparison grabs between the old ABUS DVD from the Giallo Collection boxset and the KOCH DVD.

ABUS first, KOCH underneath.

I absolutely love this film. Superb score by Morricone. Great cast and one of those killer 70's downbeat endings. Audio was a little low on the old AB disc though.
My girlfriend lives in the Czech Republic and near Mala Strana where this was filmed, and I am there every month, so I always take pleasure in trying to spot where they filmed certain scenes...for instance, in the credits where the camera is placed on top of the moving ambulance - it's funny to see how we're meant to get the impression that the ambulance is going through lots of winding little roads when in fact, the route it takes would actually take you round and round in circles. Trivial observations aside, that Koch disc looks like a beauty and I'd have picked it up if the Mario Adorf commentary wasn't in German only.

just watched this

a very gothic and eerie vibe in this one, it is not uber stylish with the killings, but instead it is just creepy. the cinematography was gorgeous, done by Giuseppe Ruzzolini who was responsible for such films as "Bandits in Milan," "Theorem," "Duck, You Sucker," "My Name is Nobody," and "Hitch-Hike."

the settings in the morgue with jean sorel narrating in flashbacks sets a cool stylistic tone for the film. jean sorel is very good as the lead in this one, playing his character with subtlety and emotion.

this one is slow moving but very stylish and atmospheric. the plot is somewhat confusing at times, but it doesn't take away too much from the film. A very good soundtrack from Morricone with the main theme being especially memorable.

i didn't like mario adorf's character, his screentime annoyed me.

the best things about the movie, i think, were the photographic compositions, and the gothic atmosphere created by the inclusion of dead bodies in a morgue, occult surgeons, the cold czech city setting, and ritualistic orgies  :-*

and the ending really is great...both the sleazy part and the super intense ending.

7.75/10

Wow that Koch set looks fantastic. Shame the commentary/Adorf material is only in German...

I'll give the film another whirl and decide if I want to upgrade to the Koch disc (money permitting). They put together such nice releases.

Does anyone have the version FilmFour showed on tv around 15 years ago, it was in Italian with English subs unlike all the English dubbed dvd releases! Would love to see this again. I did record it at the time on vhs since it was before most people had dvd recorders, but the tape has long since grown mold and died!

agreed! the dubbing really mars his performance. I love the movie and Adorf's always fun to watch. In his interview on the AB-disc, Lado talks fondly of Adorf. A couple of years ago, Adorf was voted Germany's second most popular/best actor ever...

Didn't he eat cooked cats in Argento's debut?

I think it really transcends the genre, it's much more complex. The setting in the ČSSR, the subject of political oppression makes it work on several different levels and lifts it way above most other Gialli for me. Most gialli seem to be content to just drool over a crassly exaggerated idea of life among the upper classes (Lenzi, Fulci, Bava, Martino, Ercoli, Miraglia, etc.).
There's something seriously haunting about it, not too many gialli have that quality. It has a lot in common with Avati's movies. Plus, it captures an image of Prague as it was in these bizarre and now long gone times.

Post by: Strigoyu on 07 Jan 2013 - 17:42
I agree with you, mate. I think Lenzi was obsessed with that image in his Giallo or Thrillers, or whatever. He always depicted the same idea on and on... But his gialli were really fine. However, I think he was not that misogynous as his other counterparts in the genre. Thanks.

Sure, there is always moaning, but then again, if you release something that nobody knows, most people won't buy it either... So...

Yes, it will have the Italian language track. We opted against the English one since it's pretty atrocious and the Italian one is of course Aldo Lado's preferred version -- which is a huge factor for us. The interesting thing is also how different the two versions are.

It's very unusual for me that this is the second Camera Obscura announcement in a row that I've a) Heard of and b) seen, but it is a great announcement (as indeed was the prior announcement), and one I will snap up. With the previous two announcements being more well known, I hope it doesn't make it difficult to pick up. I sometimes wait to order 3 German / Austrian imports at a time to split the postage costs. Hopefully they won't sell out before I get my orders in. Perhaps I'll get lucky and there'll be a few things out I want around the same time, it's been a great few months for German / Austrian imports at the moment.

We are very proud and happy as can be that we could get an interview with the legendary Edda Dell'Orso for the SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS disc! We think that everybody here has heard of Edda, but if not: She's the vocalist who ennobled many an Italian soundtrack, especially the ones by Ennio Morricone, with her sublime voice.

That's fantastic news, I adore Edda Dell'Orso's vocals on many soundtracks. One question I have about the release is that you've said the English soundtrack is in bad condition could you not 'borrow' it from the US Anchor Bay or Blue Underground DVD releases? I don't recall the soundtrack they used having any problems.

No, it's not about quality but about the horrendous dubbing job. anyway, we could use either English or Italian and settled for Italian, of course.

In the words of Jean Sorel:

Something that bothered me a lot when I watched the movie is that the English dubbing
sounds awful to me. Awful, absolutely atrocious. It's very bad. I don't know who did it and why, but it's extremely bad. Mario Adorf is dubbed in a terrible way. He sounds like an old boozer when he talks, he can't articulate.

So, there. :)

I'm glad you made that decision. I agree that the English dub is worse than usual for this film and have always wanted to see it in Italian and HD to do it proper justice. Looking forward!

Anyway, Lado said to me (and he even says in the long documentary) that the original version of the movie has to be considered the Italian one. Most of the actors said their lines in Italian (Sorel, Bach, Thulin and Adorf knew the language pretty well) and the English dubbing was made long after the movie was finished.

Anyway, enjoy the marvelous Edda from today's interview:

We have to say this about the SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS transfer: Unfortunately, it's not comparable with our previous HD transfers. One reason for this is that Aldo Lado shot the film very soft to create a dream-like atmosphere while our other films had a very sharp focus. The second, real problem was that the negative was extremely destroyed -- which is something we would have never thought possible, and if it wouldn't have been SHORT NIGHT, we might not even have bought the license. Regarding dust and scratches, we were on about the level of TOP SENSATION, but there was yet another, even more drastic problem: About half the material was moldy. In short, we basically had to take the whole film apart and put it back together in order to get a presentable result. Weeks of restoration by hand, and so on, were necessary to get the defects in shape. I think the result came out as very watchable, though!

This is wonderful news. CO just continue to hit home runs with their releases - and their transparency regarding any and all transfer issues is most welcome.

Even if their products are ridiculously expensive for me to purchase (with RRP, postage fees and a lousy exchange rate), I'll still support them.

We have good news (or probably bad news for all of those who replied in various forums to our openness in a less than friendly tone and with unfounded assertions): We've talked a lot with our two labs in the last few days and ultimately decided to abandon all reason and sanity and start the SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS transfer from scratch. This means a new scan with optical scratch removal tools to reduce defects, scanning the entire content of the 2P-frame, new filtering of the remaining defects without de- and regraining. In the end, this means a bitter loss of a couple thousand euros, 3.5 weeks of lifetime for the manual restoration that was done on the old master (plus the time for the manual restoration of the new one), but in exchange, being able to release the discs in all conscience. And our reputation is always more important to us than profit. There will definitely be more small remaing defects than in the first transfer, but therefore the film's naturalness is retained -- the way we and most of you like it. The release will have to be pushed back further into the summer, though. More information will follow.

So if Short Night is delayed can something else be brought forward in the schedule?

Unfortunatley no. Since all work force is put into the new transfer right now.

Kudos to you for taking this approach, not many other companies would take this this much care about their products.

It is amazing what you're doing but at the same time, a shame you've capitulated to the vocal minority. Nevertheless, you demonstrate why you've got such a loyal band of followers, myself included!

To shorten the wait, we decided to post a few screenshots of the new SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS transfer. We tried to match the old screenshots as perfectly as possible so you can do comparisons.

The restoration of SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS is finally completed! One Italian lab, two German ones (automatic and manual retouching) and us for the fine tuning „smile“-Emoticon 3 additional frame-by-frame passes for the correction of almost 100.000 scratches and other remaining unpretty blemishes) have fought for months now through the hell of the film's worn and torn negative. The result is absolutely fantastic, and we can now (extremely) happily proclaim that SHORT NIGHT looks just as good as our other discs. Now we're starting the testing phase and then our hitherto most elaborate release is finally done!
