Is Milan Calibre 9 really a 2-disc set? I bought this when it first came out (direct from Raro) and I only ever got 1 disc (the box says 2 discs) A few years later I read on a forum it was a miss-print and there never was a second disc...Then a few months ago someone here made a comment which suggested they had seen all of the extras on the 2nd disc....

I clicked the link on the Kult video site, and they say 2 discs...

If it does exist can someone pm with a copy?  I did buy it...and I'm not shelling out for another copy. I already had the Shendene VHS and a Dutch VHS....and the Raro disc. The Di Leo estate have had enough of my cash!

Always bugged me this one.

Yes, 'Milano calibro 9' is a two disc set.

'La mala ordina' (Manhunt) came with a mis-printed sleeve though. My copy says 2 disc set when it is in fact a single disc release.

'La mala ordina' (Manhunt) came with a mis-printed sleeve though. My copy says 2 disc set when it is in fact a single disc release.

Apparently, Raro corrected that problem.  My copy of LA MALA ORDINA just says "Collector's Edition, " without "2 DVD" following it.

Does that mean my copy is more valuable?  The rare mis-printed sleeve variant :-\

The two sleeves also have different EAN numbers and the layout of the rear of the sleeve is laid out differently.

Wht don't you auction it off on ebay and find out!  ;D

When I bought SLEEPLESS from Amazon.co.uk the keepcase sleeve cover pictured  shows it as "two discs."

Amazon.co.uk link (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00005UPMF/ref=nosim?tag=lovelockandlo-21)

I complained because I only received one disc and Amazon's own review talked about the DVD having two discs and described the contents on the second disc.

Well they appeared to have changed their review but the keepcase sleeve cover pictured still lists it as the "Special Two-Disc Collector's Edition."

Furthermore,

I may have confused Calibre 9 with La Mala Ordina... but I dont think so.

I'll have to dig them out one day and figure this out.

Thanks for the info.

Not sure if I mentioned this before, but with my 2 Disc IL BOSS/KILLER VS KILLERS set, the discs themselves are printed opposite of which film is actually on the disc (ie - the IL BOSS movie is on the disc with the KILLER VS KILLERS artwork and vice versa.)
anyone else's copy like this?

I think this was discussed before and everyone's was like that. Unless I dreamt it. My discs are the wrong way round, anyhow.

Now this is exciting.  Just heard that Raro are apparently planning to release some of their catalogue in the US next year on Blu-Ray and DVD.

Already announced is Antonioni's THE VANQUISHED, scheduled for March 15 2010.

DVD Aficionado state they will also be releasing the classic Di Leo Euro-Crime films MILANO CALIBRO 9, LA MALA ORDINA, IL BOSS and RULERS OF THE CITY in a four disc box set and Barilli's PERFUME OF THE LADY IN BLACK.  I am not sure whether these will also be on the Blu-Ray format.

Bear in mind that the Blu-ray rumour only started with Oli saying...

and Aarron following it up with...

As far as I'm aware there's been no mention of any Blu-rays of the Di Leo crime films from Raro officially.

Be interesting to see if the US release has the bonus disc with CALIBRO 9, if it does it should be subtitled unlike the Italian release.

Less than $30 for the whole set? Pretty good price.
I will double dip on this as well.

Here's hoping Raro didn't lock their disc to R1. I currently only have my BD player connected, and it's only capable of playing R2 DVDs...
I can't believe I have to worry again about region codes. ;D

I don't have the Raro Italy set for comparison, but RULERS OF THE CITY is non-anamorphic on both sets and PERFUME OF THE LADY IN BLACK appears to be the same master (although running at film speed).

I don't see why not.  The first three releases had both tracks and English subs.

PR blurb for LIVE LIKE A COP...

LIVE LIKE A COP, DIE LIKE A MAN LIVES UP TO ITS REPUTATION AS ONE OF THE MOST VIOLENT FILMS EVER MADE

LOS ANGELES (June 23, 2011) – Referenced in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 2, Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man (1976) is one of the most violent, censored and unconventional Italian style detective films of its time. The credit goes to both the director Ruggero Deodato, extremely apt at telling stories in a strong tone (he made the infamous Cannibal Holocaust), and the scriptwriter Fernando di Leo, author of the best Italian noir films (Recently released in a DVD boxed set as The Fernando Di Leo Crime Collection – All four films will be available as individual breakouts on July 14 from RaroVideo). Above all, the psychological and behavioral description of the main characters, the two policemen, members of an anti-crime squad who have complete freedom in their actions against crime, had never been seen before. Not only do they not hesitate to brutally kill the criminals they are hunting down, but Alfredo (Marc Porel) and Antonio (Ray Lovelock) do so while maintaining a cynical and light-hearted attitude even in the most threatening situations.

LIVE LIKE A COP, DIE LIKE A MAN has been restored through a new digital HD transfer from the original 35mm negatives

RaroVideo U.S.’s restored version of Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man, will arrive on DVD for the first time ever on July 26. The extensive DVD extras include the documentary entitled, Poliziotti Violenti and a fully illustrated booklet containing critical analysis of the film.

Language: Italian with optional English subtitles

LIVE LIKE A COP, DIE LIKE A MAN – SPECIAL FEATURES:
-Documentary: Poliziotti Violenti, running time 40 min.
-TV advertisement directed and commented by Ruggero Deodato
-Director filmography and biography
-A fully illustrated booklet containing critical analysis of the film
-New digital transfer from original 35mm negative
-Digitally restored and remastered
-New and improved English subtitle translation

They probably copied the details from the DVD set, as the site mentions "Exclusive: Rulers of The City DVD" (implying the film would be included on a DVD), while on their facebook page they confirmed "Rulers of the City (a new exclusive HD transfer and Digitally Restored version) is part of this four discs Blu-Ray box set".

It's definitely worth a try although it's only a  $3-4 difference now. The exchange rate has dipped again so if it stays where it is now when HMCE update it even $22.99 might be pushing it.

Yeah, I was going by the HMCE rate which is 1.566 for January. It's about $1.53 at the moment bank wise and to be safe at even $22.99 the HMCE rate has to be around $1.54 next month.

Revised prices now on the site for the Di Leo Blu-ray box.

$22.99 inc FREE shipping for the US

$30.99 inc International shipping for outside the US (the $22.99 price was an a deal for customers ordering in the first 24hrs, this new price is still a GREAT deal though)

They posted on Facebook that they will mark down UK orders to $20 on the customs slip, I'd hedge your bets and email them requesting this just in case they forget.

Probably just me but I am kinda disappointed. I simply don't like the way some (the two the review also mentions...) of these look (the Arrow/BU way of releasing Italian titles :D ) and as far as my opinion goes they aren't supposed to look that way. Very much reminds me of Arrow's Tenebrae which was totally destroyed by the much more detailed French disc. I wasn't expecting superb transfers but was hoping they wouldn't end up like... this.  ;D

Just my opinion... :-*

At least they most likely didn't fuck them like Raro Italy did with Il Conformista (the restoration by Cineteca Bologna looks great, the BR made from it is filtered shit).

Oh well, I guess I'll keep my Amazon order anyways.

You should cancel it. You'll never be able to watch CALIBRE 9 or MR SCARFACE without them being spoiled because of the problems you have with the transfers.

$24 (and not much for shipping as it was a part of a larger order that has been delivered otherwise) is quite alright if I can tolerate the other two transfers. :D

I can watch the other two from my Raro DVDs if the first minutes of the BRs are too much torture for me. :-*
I haven't actually seen any of these films yet even though I have had the Italian DVDs for years and Calibre 9 was even shown on TV a few years ago (I think I even recorded it).

You know, sometimes I still can't believe we are getting to watch films like these in HD!  ;D

A few years ago, some of these films were hard to find on a decent VHS tape, especially uncut. Next thing you know we start having them more or less easily available on DVD, with the proper aspect ratio and fully uncut. And now, I still can't watch major Hollywood productions like Ghostbusters 2 or The Addams Family on BD, but I can get these Di Leo films on HD, and at a great price.

Yeah, I got an email from paypal/Raro saying my order status had changed to shipped.

And a really nice set it is too.  Great cover art, nice packaging (love the slim line Blu-Ray cases), accompanying booklet and a bookmark.  Can't wait to see the luscious Barbara Bouchet dancing in full HD.

Anyone else got theirs yet? I placed my order the day Jonny put the link up, just got this email:

Dear friend,

We're sorry to inform you that due to an overwhelming number of orders for the Fernando Di Leo Crime Collection blu-ray, we have run out of stock. We've placed another much larger order which will be pressed and ready by mid-February. If you want to cancel your order you can do so at any time and we will simply refund you. Otherwise we will ship your blu-ray as soon as possible. Again, we apologize for this inconvenience. We knew the Di Leo would be a popular blu-ray, but didn't predict such a huge demand!

I'd imagine that any existing bulk orders with businesses like Amazon would have been taken into account, mate. Raro wouldn't run the risk of upsetting a customer as big as Amazon.

Still, you'd have thought it would have shipped already if yesterday was the official release date...

True. I'm just concerned that with Amazon still having it listed as 31st, if people are still pre-ordering there'll be no further stock available after a point. Amazon are a bit random in the order they ship out. For instance, they'll generally ship out Prime orders first no matter when the order was placed. Had mine in for over 2 months now.

My Italian Connection Blu Ray has a digital glitch at approximately 18:46 (the beginning of the night club scene) - there is a strange digital band across the screen for a split second.  Anyone else notice this?  Hoping it's just an isolated problem and I can get it replaced...

Yea, I noticed even more glitches as the film went on at the lumber yard fight scene and plenty of them during the final junkyard scene.  Really disappointing...  I'm waiting to hear back from raro.  They're probably sick of me by now having already asked them for a replacement for my damaged outer box.

This doesn't look like compression artifacts. I've never seen these sort of noisy lines... There is most likely something wrong with the master itself.

It might be a player issue - I remember reading something similar on a blog ages ago... Not in relation to this film - but the fault was the same.

If the problem affects everyone's copy then, obviously, it's a problem with the mastering - But you might want to ask around and see if it's a universal problem.

I've posted here and AV Maniacs...not many seem to care or want to reply regarding these video glitches I guess...  Thankfully the older Italian DVDs were of such high quality that this situation doesn't suck as bad as it could have.

Here is the response from Raro:

Quote
Dear Gary,

Thanks for pointing out the problem with the Italian Connection blu-ray. Unfortunately, at this point there's not much we can do to correct the disc. If you're dissatisfied with the collection you can return it and we'll issue you a refund. Alternatively we can send you the single DVD of the Italian Connection, so that you have a clean copy. Again, thank you for your feedback and ongoing interest in RaroVideo.

Best,

Great, and i gifted my DVDs to a good friend. But i guess i can live with the glitches ... the flicks never looked better. Too bad about this issues.

Watched "The Boss" yesterday ... great as always, noticed some minor echo-ing in 2 dialog scenes (Italian Dub) so i switched to the English Dub which was crystal clear.

I've decided to return it for a refund.

I watched the other titles in the box, and they don't look very good.  Fuzzy digital noise look on everything and very unnatural - however, the further you sit from the TV the better it looks.  The Italian Raro DVDs are still really great looking on my HD setup (Even the letterboxed PADRONI DELLA CITTA looks better zoomed in than the new BD!) so I'll stay content with those.  I LOVE Di Leo, but I can't support these new releases at all.  Such a disappointment.  Will most likely go with the DVD version of their eventual release of SHOOT FIRST DIE LATER unless they improve their quality standards.

Well, to a certain degree i can understand Gary. But all in all, in my opinion, the quality is a step up. I think we have to take in consideration that the movies are nearly 40 years old and the prints maybe not be in perfect condition as some american classics of that time period.

THE BOSS, CALIBER 9 are in great shape ... lots of grain and detail ... very film-like and rough, the way this movies should have been.
I am also upset with the Glitches in THE ITALIAN CONNECTION ... and i don't understand why 95 % of all reviewers didn't adress them. Maybe they are just noticed by us Genre-Lovers who know every second of this flick.

But as said above ... they pop-up for a millisecond. There are a few but they don't utterly destroy the movie.  Maybe one day there will be a replacement program.

I for one will keep this Collection.  :)

Title: Re: Raro (Italy & USA)

Mine arrived a couple of days ago. Box a little crumpled but nothing to be too bothered about.

Watched CALIBER 9 last night and it looked really good to my eyes. I'll be going through it hopefully over the next few days.

I did pop in THE ITALIAN CONNECTION as well. Tried to get through it but too tired in the end. I did make it past the night club scene though. The glitch there really is a millisecond. If I hadn't seen the screengrab posted I'd have thought it was just a bit of damage as there's no way i could have defined what it actually was in that time. I didn't get to encounter any others yet but if they're similar to this, I can handle it quite easily.

Yes, i know we should be aiming at perfection and things like this shouldn't get past QC. I hope they do a replacement purely for the sake that it's something that could have been avoided, but otherwise it's not something that takes me out of the film in the slightest. I've seen HD transfers with plenty of print damage here and there and maybe I just have a high tolerance now but that doesn't really bother me either. The glitch I saw is no worse than a reel change mark or big scratch/hair whatever.

Settling for less than perfect? Maybe but for the £20 I paid for the whole set it's not a deal-breaker.

I watched the first 55 minutes last night and spotted two of the glitches. They were so fleeting and take up so little of the screen that they're practically imperceptible. I don't think they'd ruin even Michael McKenzie's enjoyment of the film.

And looking at the glitch Gary posted earlier in the thread - said glitch looked nothing like as prominent on mine. Much thinner - practically hairline and was on screen for what probably only amounted to a frame or two.

Watched the whole thing and noticed four in all. One during the shootout was a bit more noticeable because it was green but still they were all millisecond flashes. Didn't detract me from enjoying it at all.

Seems it's enough for some though as Amazon.com have withdrawn it from sale while under investigation.

I wouldn't have thought Amazon would withdraw it for that. It's probably because their description inaccurately describes it as having DTS Surround Sound.

Just got this email, hardly my fault is it but looks like I'm in a catch-22 situation.

Dear friend,

The Di Leo blu-ray is finally back in stock! We just have one last tiny detail to resolve before we can ship your order.. in our initial pricing of the box sets, we didn't factor in how much it would cost us to ship the box sets Internationally - $12 per set. And surprisingly, the majority of demand for the set is coming from abroad. So we need to ask you to help us cover shipping costs. We're asking an $8 contribution which would bring the price of the set to just over $30, which is still well below what it's selling for on Amazon. Please let us know if you're willing to do this. If so I'll send you an invoice and the second it's paid we'll ship your set. If not, we'll simply refund you. Thank you again for your ongoing patience and interest in RaroVideo!

That's a bit shitty, although I can vouch that they're right on the shipping costs - in fact it was a bit over $12. But surely they should have known that when they set the deal up? After all they've been selling stuff online since they opened shop. Personally, I'd pay the extra; begrudgingly.

What gets me is the:

We're asking an $8 contribution which would bring the price of the set to just over $30

which makes it near enough $34.

Even though I ordered it the same day Jonny put the link up by the time I ordered it was $25.99 not $22.99.

If I knew they were gonna pull this I would have been better off pre-ordering at amazon when they had it for $22.99 plus postage.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be the usual suspects selling it on the amazon.co.uk marketplace at the moment - might be worth waiting a day or so and seeing how much it'll cost there before taking the plunge.

June 5
Madness directed by Fernando Di Leo

July 3
Waves of Lust directed by Ruggero Deodato

September 25
The Night of the Devils directed by Giorgio Ferroni

I really like Waves of Lust,it's more of a "pre-Argento style" giallo imho.
But I already own the Italian dvd...

Must-buy for me though is this one...  ::)

I'm reluctant to buy any of their DVD releases as they may appear on Blu-Ray. Surely this approach is costing them sales? I'll be very tempted by NIGHT OF THE DEVILS though. Most of their catalogue is available on the US Netflix service. I might watch LIVE LIKE A MAN, DIE LIKE A COP later; I give up waiting for the Blu-Ray.

That's why I haven't bought any more U.S. Raro on DVD. Had the Di Leo Box and got rid when the blu's come out and got the U.S. Murder Obsession because it was anamorphic and the Raro Italian one I had wasn't only for a Blu to come out.

Hmm, I was going to order it from Raro, but I'm not very convinced with the price.
They are giving this item a lower discount percentage than any other item on the website. I paid far less for box set one from them (also a pre-order), and now they want far more for less films/discs?

I ordered the first set and they were totally customs friendly, many people requested that they mark the price down on the customs form for UK customers and they did so. They posted on the Facebook page that they would do so. I'd say if you have any worries about this to either post on their Facebook wall or contact them directly.

I had no trouble with customs (although, do note I'm not in the UK), but the packaging used left a lot to be desired, and the set arrived a bit squashed.

The 2nd Di Leo Blu-Ray boxset is up for pre-ordering at Importcds.com for $28.59 (+there's a current coupon at the website for an extra 10% off).

I have quite mixed experiences when ordering from them (the packaging they use is quite terrible, which may be fine for releases with tougher cases (such as the Redemption titles released by Kino), but it's a big no-no for eco-cases or thinner cases (ex: MGM releases), which always arrived to me squashed to bits), but I know some fellow members used them with no major issues.

Raro Italy has just released the Gian Maria Volonte Collection (Sbatti Il Mostro In Prima Pagina, La Classe Operaia Va In Paradiso and Uomini Contro). May 28th for Shoot First Die Later and June 25th for Di Leo box Vol 2. Apparently they've switched distribution to Kino-Lorber now so their US release dates should probably be more solid from here on.

Emailed Raro a couple of days ago about date for second Di Leo blu-ray set and just got this reply:

the official release date of “ FERNANDO DI LEO CRIME COLLECTION vol.2”( 3 disc + booklet BR & DVD box-set) has been fixed for June 26th 2013 .
We will give priority to all the pre-orders received and we should be able to ship them approx. one month before.
To all the confirmed pre orders will add a free single Blu-ray of your choice.
Thanks for your cooperation and support.
RaRO team"

It still says 25th on their site.  :-\

Need to raise some money for a preorder sometime then as I could do with a free Murder Obsession BD.

Raro Italy has just released the Gian Maria Volonte Collection (Sbatti Il Mostro In Prima Pagina, La Classe Operaia Va In Paradiso and Uomini Contro). I would have preferred Investigation of a Citizen... or A Ciascuno Il Suo instead of La Classe Operaia Va In Paradiso but it's still a good looking set.

KultVideo indicates English subtitle options whereas Amazon.it states Italian only.

Does anyone know which is correct?

Now Amazon.it also lists English subtitles.

Thanks. Looks like they changed it overnight as it listed Italian only yesterday.

Good stuff, added to my future purchases list!

Unfortunately not all is good. Gialloboy Mike went to watch Sbatti and there isn't any Engish subtitles.

RARO VIDEO PACTS FOR EXCLUSIVE U.S. DISTRIBUTION WITH KINO LORBER
*
Acclaimed Italian Home Video Label Teams
With Leading Independent Art House Distributor
*
Upcoming Releases Include Director Fernando Di Leo's Shoot First Die Later,
As Well As the Second Volume of Di Leo's Crime Collection Anthology
*
NEW YORK (March 13, 2013) - Raro Video U.S., the American branch of Italy's most influential home video company, is pleased to announce that it has agreed to an exclusive, multi-year distribution deal with Kino Lorber, a leader in distributing independent art house films in the U.S.

The first title from this partnership will arrive on May 28 with the release of SHOOT FIRST DIE LATER on DVD and Blu-ray. The 1974 film is by the influential Italian director Fernando Di Leo, a master of bold, intricately plotted, ultra-violent stories and a precursor to such directors as Quentin Tarantino and John Woo.

Di Leo's work will also be the subject of the second release from Raro Video and Kino Lorber. The FERNANDO DI LEO CRIME COLLECTION VOLUME 2 will be available on June 25 on DVD and Blu-ray.
It includes three of De Leo's films: Naked Violence, Kidnap Syndicate and Shoot First Die Later.

La Classe Operaia Va In Paradiso is a well made film with a good performance by Volonte but ultimately it's just not very exciting. I think it has more impact if you're Italian, or have lived in Italy, as it addresses a lot of social and political issues that were relevant a t the time.

Uomini Contro is one I've had on DVDR for ages but never got round to watching. I skimmed it and it looks like quite a decent, gritty war film.

Think I'll swerve this one now and save my money for either the Petri or Damiani box sets instead.

Nice to see some Cavallone get a legit release, except for 'Masters of the World' (which doesn't actually have any dialogue) none of his films have enjoyed an English friendly release. - Although I'm surprised nobody has picked up 'Le Salamandre' - it was his biggest money maker, inspired a few films, and gets referenced a number of times in films from the period. 'Blue Movie' certainly has the shock value but it's hardly his most accomplished film by a long stretch. Still, any Cavallone on DVD or Blu is to be saluted.

Have the guys at Cinekult jumped ship to RARO or something? It certainly feels like it with all these recent announcements. Here's hoping!

From www.blu-ray.com (http://www.blu-ray.com)

Independent distributors Raro Video have confirmed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray Italian director Antonio Margheriti's I lunghi capelli della morte a.k.a The Long Hair of Death (1964), starring Barbara Steele (Black Sunday), George Ardisson (Juliet of the Spirits), and Halina Zalewska (The Leopard). The release is expected to arrive on the market this Fall.

In this gothic gem, Steele plays Helen Karnstein, whose mother is burned at the stake as a witch. Helen vows revenge, but is pushed off a cliff before she can carry it out. Death cannot stop her, however, and she returns to wreck havoc upon the man who falsely accused her mother. There is something for everyone in this moody masterpiece: a sinister castle, secret passageways, hidden crypts, ghostly temptresses, plague, witch burning, seduction and adultery. A Barbara Steele classic!

I got mine from eBay - I'll never buy direct from them again. They're absolutely useless to deal with and if they do bother get back to you it's with promises they can't keep or complete lies. It's better to pay the extra few quid and buy from a reputable retailer. It's a shame really because it's tarnished my view of them completely, I had always had first class experience dealing with the Italian company.

Has anyone else experienced any weird playback issues from their BD Vol. 2 set? All 3 films move sort of "weird" picture-wise, to my eyes. I'm having a hard time describing it well, but it almost looks as if I'm fast forwarding ever so slightly, yet the audio matches up fine. More than a little distracting, to be honest, but I got used to it after a while.

Raro to Release Franco Prosperi's Meet Him and Die
Posted September 24, 2013 04:36 PM by Webmaster

Independent distributors Raro Video have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray Italian director Franco Prosperi's (Last House on the Beach) crime thriller Meet Him and Die a.k.a Pronto ad uccidere (1976), starring Ray Lovelock, Elke Sommer, Martin Balsam, and Ettori Manni. The release is set to arrive on the U.S. market in early 2014.

A robbery goes terribly wrong for a hapless criminal when he goes to knock off a jewelry store. Upon entering the store, the steel shutters immediately slam down and lock him inside until the police arrive. He is later sent to jail, but it doesn't take long before he befriends a big time crime boss inside. The two execute a successful break out and we soon find out that we don't really know the true background of these criminals or what is really motivating them.

Raro to Release Umberto Lenzi's Sacrifice!
Raro Video USA has confirmed that it plans to bring to Blu-ray cult Italian director Umberto Lenzi's Sacrifice! a.k.a Il paese del sesso selvaggio (1972), starring Ivan Rassimov, Me Me Lai, Prasitsak Singhara, and Ong Ard. The release is expected to arrive on the American market in 2014.
Synopsis: Cannibal horror directed by Umberto Lenzi. Fleeing from underworld justice, photojournalist John Bradley (Rassimov) takes to the jungle where he goes native and finds love. Yeah saw this the other day on their fbook page. Hope they don't use the title "scarifice" though, a few people have already complained to them about it, asking for it to be either "man from deep river" or "deep river savages" Should be a good release, not least as Shreik show's DVD fucked up the subtitling for the natives. Hope the transfer is good, as some of Raro's recent transfers have been mediocre, including "Nightmare City" which i have it on good authority from several paeople in the U.S that have already received it, looks pretty soft and muddy in places

The 35mm print of this film I saw last year was under the title "Sacrifice." I'm assuming it was taken from the film's American drive in/grindhouse run, but the one difference it had was a KILLER opening funk track which WASN'T included on the recent soundtrack release this year. I'm assuming it was a library track, but does anyone know from which library (De Wolfe, Chappell, Bosworth, Bruton, etc) or artist it was nicked?

do they "mark down" the value on the customs label?

otherwise makes it pointless taking up their half price deal as custom fees will eradicate any saving

Yes, they do. Just to be sure, I would send them an email asking them to do so.

Even with their half price sales it works out cheaper all in to get them from amazon.

Just got Nightmare City, great so far except for a bit of a mistake in the subtitling. At around the 37 min mark there's a line of Italian  dialogue that has no subtitles.  ???

Got mine a couple of weeks ago, not sure why yours are delayed mate. I'd kick a fuss up if I were you.

@Ben Cobb
I feel your pain.  I ordered directly from Raro during a sale they were having in December just before the holidays.  I waited a few weeks and nothing.  I emailed them asking for tracking number, etc., and they kept telling me to wait. After a few emails back and forth it think they finally broke down and sent me another package which arrived in March.  My package was sent from Minneapolis, and I’m in Chicago, which isn't a great distance.  No matter how small of an outfit this is, this type of service is poor.

Complained and they promised to send out another package on March 9th but still nothing... have sent numerous emails now and no reply. Terrible service.

I realise people will have unique problems with any business but my only experience with Raro was extremely positive. I ordered Nightmare City from blowitouttahere on eBay and it came with no slip cover. Blowit wanted me to return it (not going to happen at my expense from the UK to the US!) so I took a punt and emailed Raro to see if they'd let me have one. I made a very nominal payment and I got one mailed to me. I think that's above and beyond to be fair to them.

In a similar boat. My order of KILKER COP was dispatched late February and still hasn't arrived. I introduced a screening of Cavallone's BLUE MOVIE in Italy last week. The organisers said that Raro were a nightmare to deal with, ending up having to screen the DVD. Beginning to be really unimpressed with the company's practices.

I think any company that puts these films out should be saluted but RARO (and others) have disappointed me advertising their films with "new and improved English subtitles" and then using dubtitles that don't match the Italian dialogue. I've said it before but their release of 'Il Poliziotto e Marcio' is a travesty. Likewise, their release of 'Roma Drogata' does, I believe, contain a bastardised version of my old fansubs. Likewise, the recent release of 'Provincia Violenta' (admittedly not a RARO disc) also contains dubtitles (or possibly translated from the German audio track)

I (and others) have spent many years working hard to give people the chance to watch Italian films in their original language with English subtitles - and then companies like RARO, that have a golden opportunity to give fans the perfect version of a film, try to palm off shoddy work on an unsuspecting public.

It's depressing that a company gives you the impression they care about the art, then they pull a cheap stunt like that.

The only company (I don't work for!) that genuinely cares (imho) is Camera Obscura - the subs I've seen have been excellent - I just wish other companies like RARO could follow their example. If they fixed their subs they'd be doing Italian genre cinema justice. As it stands I can't help but think that they care more about shifting units than taking their time over a release and doing things properly which is a crying shame...

People complain about the grey-market and torrents but right now they're the only places where there's a wealth of Italian genre films with English subs. If you want more 'legit' options then people need to complain and companies need to listen otherwise they'll just keep messing things up.

I would be more than happy to offer my services - either as a subtitler or even as proofreader for free if they'd like to get in contact with me.

(pre-Easter rant over!)

Nothing wrong with a good rant  ;D. It just pisses me off, "Newly translated Subtitles" my arse, Raro do annoy me sometimes.

For my money, these labels would be lucky to have someone as thorough as you working for them, Django! Backed 100 percent.

It could be a business Idea. DVD companies can hire translators for their subtitled projects.
People who actually understand the language, then they can say, "With sub translations by.....". It would show a lot more care on these films, and I know that a lot of people, would really appreciate it.

from what i know of pro subtitling - which is always going to vary in quality and have flaws - the idea of english matching the original language is something of a red herring. subs are an adaptation of the sentiment, not of the literal dialogue, and seem to be a form of rewriting the film so it all makes sense. all kinds of factors i suspect - ability to read has a different speed limitation to ability to listen to a language if you already speak it and understand it. i'm no translator, but i do have one good friend who professionally subs japanese films, so i've gather a little sense of it from that perspective.

i'd imagine, outside of the field, subbers identities wouldn't register with viewers all too often, even if always named at the end of releases; i've noted lots of mentions that USA companies releasing anime have based their official releases on what they seem to assume are good fansubs done for torrents when a show first airs. there's always a sense, perhaps naive expectation from those of us who are customers more than business operators / self-employed, that if you're paying you'd expect to get perfection - but there's a compromise that's always being balanced out, and it's the ability to make a profit from the slice of time you can afford to allocate to any one job.

i remember watching a lot of the noshame USA releases and being surprised by how much dialogue was on screen - very hard to read, but always felt unusually close to the amount of stuff being spoken. at the other end of the scale, some foreign dramas on TV are subbed very lightly, with bold, simple lines for a much broader audience. most stuff i've seen on DVD has been a middle ground, i'd guess. raro, whose subs i've not experienced much of (because i don't buy into the picture quality when reviews come around, so i often back out of buying their stuff) seem all kinds of unpredictable.

Steele gets testy about the missing E during the commentary over the end credits of NIGHTMARE CASTLE, but it seems to happened quite a bit in her Italian films.
