I watched this tonight - didn't have great expectations as I was overly impressed with Hayers' gialloesque ASSAULT. Anyway, I thought I'd give this one a go - it's a hard disc to track down, as the company that released it are selling it exclusively through their website but I managed to find one on eBay.
The film follows the plight of a family who's young daughter has been murdered by a sex offender. The chief suspect in the case has been released, due to a lacak of evidence, so the girl's father, his elder son and the father of another victim unite with a plan for retribution. Laying in wait, the trio pounce and abduct the suspect and relocate him to the cellar of the pub where two of them work. What follows is a battle of wits and a coming to terms with acts of brutality none knew they were capable of.
To say any more would do the film a real disservice. Suffice to say, it's an impeccably crafted film that really builds a frenzied level of suspense, as those involved in the kidnapping polt begin to question their actions and the police begin to close in.
While it's not on the same par as Sidney Lumet's similarly-themed THE OFFENCE, this is a cracking thriller that stands as a savage critique of mob justice.

Agreed Paul its fucking ace. Loved the old nostalgia feel of the seventies I grew up in but the story twists and turns as well even Collins seems to put some effort into her performance. A good and hard to find release well worth tracking down imo.
-
Need to see this too, it's currently collecting dust in the dvd shelf.
-
It's funny, becasue when we were dicussing this on the AB forum, there were some really indifferent comments about this film and there was a particular emphasis on Collins' performance - I thought she was good in this, and think that it was probably the best I've seen her give.

Never did manage to get a DD disc of this, anyone want to swap it for my JEF films release? ;D

Keeping me eye out on ebay, and I had a feeling that would be the reply to the offer of the Jef disc :-\

Has anyone tried ordering it off the DD website recently? It's still functioning.

I had a look on there the other day - seems that they're selling off the dregs of their warehouse. I did a quick search for a couple of titles that were due out in August (I'd previously pre-ordered them from Play) but they weren't on the site, so I take it that they were never pressed.
-
They have a new website coming - http://www.simplyhe.co.uk and hopefully their full back catalogue will be there soon, along with their planned titles currently on hold.
-
Thanks for the tip, Magnus. It's a real shame about DD - the deal they struck with Sony looked really promising. I guess we'll never see those titles now, unless someone at Sony decides to put them out...
-
I read on the ABUK forum that the new owners are renegotiating the deal with Sony/Columbia and that they expect to release the titles from early 2008. ::)

Really? That's the first I've heard of this - I started that thread originally, too!
-
I think there were a number of non-Hammer releases negotiated too Paul such as 'The Wrong Box'. Hopefully some other goodies on the way.

There was that and GUMSHOE, I pre-ordered both of them from Play.

How is the DD disc? The copy I've seen seems to be a TV broadcast with the word "Horror" (with the last R backwards) in the corner of the screen the whole time and a still frame with the title every once in a while that is probably where the commercials were cut from the recording. It was fullscreen but did not look cropped (a couple four-shots that make use of the entire frame don't look clipped around the edges). The description in the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HORROR MOVIES didn't sound very interesting but I quite enjoyed it.
-
It's been a while since I watched the DD disc (probably more than three years now) but I remember it look quite nice. It's fullscreen but seemed well-framed, if memory serves me right.
-
I watched it this evening, cracking film, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Good, tight, grotty thriller. Sort of thing us Brits did well in the '70's...
-
I saw this for the first time on Sunday night and can only echo what other's have said...a cracking little film that deserves to be better known.

Scorpion normally have solid releases.
They should leave off that Katarina thing off the top though, makes it look like some sort of budget release.
That reminds me, when are they gonna finally release The Farmer I wonder?
-
Supposed to have reversible sleeves I think, thank god. I suppose companies have to try anything to get extra sales in these days. Code Red are doing a similar line too.

got a review copy of the Scorpion disc today.
The Katarina titles have reversible covers and the reverse covers usually lack the banner at the top.

Got my copy of Nothing But The Night today and quickly reversed that monstrosity. Can't say it looks much better without the banner though.

Wow, didn't see this coming. Can't wait, one of my favourite British thrillers, and the best Hayers.
