Won't that hurt the money made by the author? 552 pages to be exact! Maybe he can be reimbursed by amazon? I smell a lawsuit. :-\

Wish that damn Bava book would "go on sale" for a $1.00! ::)

I saw your post at the Mario Bava book thread.  I've subscribed to Video Watchdog for years, and I remember when pre-order, including s&h, for the book was about $100 US, maybe even less.  Seemed like an outrageous price at the time.  :-[  A friend who ordered the book years ago showed me his copy when it finally arrived.  GORGEOUS  ;) and extremely huge & heavy. :o

When I pre-ordered my Bava Book the $ was dreadful and I ended up paying about £60 ($120) for it which is a bargain as far as I'm concerned.

The most I paid for a book was the GODS IN POLYESTER book, a near 500 page tome of interviews with people who starred in wild movies of the 70s. It was around $85.00 but that was only because it was coming from Britain. The weight doubled the price. Thanks Mike for posting about the Damon book. I wouldn't have known otherwise. :P

Got the book today. Skimmed through it and there's a nice pic of Margaret Markov in a bikini on page 294. There appears to be a good number of chapters on his horror and western films. Lots of pictures, too. B/W only.

Here's a bit of curious info from page 359...

(In reference to another movie Damon was starring in...)

But because it went over schedule, Corbucci decided he'd have to cast another actor as the lead in DJANGO.

Mark protested: "This is a script we worked on together. We wrote it for me to play DJANGO".

"I know", lamented Sergio, "but I have no choice. We have a start date and you're not ready. I'm sorry".

Instead of Mark "they cast a guy with piercing blue eyes whom they discovered working at a gas station", he recalls with chagrin. His name was Franco Nero.

On down a bit it says this...

Although Mark missed starring in it, at least he received a co-writer credit.

It doesn't say whether he used a pseudonym or had his name removed but I don't see Damon's name listed as one of the writers on the credits of the film.

Maybe he Italianized his name for the script!  ;D

Another interesting bit being it was Damon who got Eastwood for FOD after being begged by Leone to find him an American actor. Damon himself was offered the role of the villain by Leone after he saw him in JOHNNY ORO but his agent talked him out of it.

At p. 60 of Howard Hughes' Once Upon a Time in the Italian West, Hughes writes that "Mark Damon (star of JOHNNY ORO) was slated to play Django, but Silvia Dionisio (the wife of Rugerro Deodato, Corbucci's assistant director) covnvinced Corbucci that Nero was a better choice."

That's a great book, too. I got a hardcover copy of it. Well, you know there's always conflicting stories in film but it'd be nice to know what the real facts were. Curious about the Dionisio bit considering Deodato was an AD on DJANGO.

Another version.  :-\

On the Blue Underground DVD, Nero and Deodato are interviewed in a short called "DJANGO: THE ONE AND ONLY.

Nero says that Damon was already scheduled to play Django, that Corbucci wanted him for the role, but that there was a conflict with Damon's schedule and the film's shooting schedule.  Deodato adds that there already was a contract made up for for Damon, but that he didn't like him for the role because he smiled too much - Deodato calls Damon "77 teeth" - and he wanted more of a Eastwood type for the role.   Nero concludes by noting that the Spanish producer of the film wanted a Spanish actor, not Nero, so the head of Euro International distributions, whom Nero calls "Fritzi" (sic?), looked at photos of Damon, Nero and a Spanish Actor and chose Nero for the role.  :-X

I reckon this could be a mistake, Dionisio was born in 1951 making her 15 when Django was made. Deodato married her in '71.

Interesting.  Richard Harrison tells a similar story with him being offered the role of Joe.

I should watch that interview again. Haven't watched that movie in a couple years. I remember none of that on the DVD features. :o

A certain Italian movie star (not yet mentioned here, but I won't embarass him by repeating his far-fetched claims) told me he was the original choice for the roles of Django, Rocky Balboa, and a whole bunch of other famous ones.

Just read the intro chapter/preface and almost feel bad for only paying $1 for this...!  The author apparently spent a lot of time (and years re-writing) interviewing Damon and his past/present aquaintances...
regardless:  so far, so good!  Like Jonny, my copy is resting comfortably on my toilet.

Check out pages 270 thru 279. There's a great story about Damon being lusted after by Visconti because of his similarity to Alain Delon, his former lover. Milian figures into this, too. :-*

I wondered about that.  Was Delon bi or did he sleep with Visconti to further his career.  Is it true?  Is Damon "outing" him as bi-sexual or was this common knowledge?

It doesn't say anything about Delon being bisexual only that he had a sexual relationship with him and that Delon had broken up with Visconti and he was trying to make Delon jealous by hiring Damon for the lead in BOCACCIO '70. It says Visconti knew Damon was a straight man but that he wanted to be the first male to seduce him. Damon and his new circle of "friends" were playing the 'Game of Truth', as Luciana Paluzzi calls it, and the question was raised would Damon have sex with Visconti if they were on a desert island and nobody would know of it. He said no but Tomas Milian, also there, said "I would", and it was he who got the part. There's more to the story but I don't want to spoil it all here.

I've looked at the book a little and I remember an actress telling Damon the reason Visconti brought him to Italy was due to his resemblance to Delon.

One of them who personally told him that was the French actress Dominique Boschero whom Damon was having a fling with in Italy at the time. See bottom page 275-276.

Can anyone correctly identify one of the films listed in this book:

There is a film listed as "Ho Ucciso Mio Marito [aka I Killed My Husband] (1962)" in Mark Damon's filmography in this book, plus there are two stills from it with co-star Dominique Boschero. I searched the IMDB and did a quick Google search but I can't find anything. Is it listed and I just keep missing it?
