Title: Stagefright / Aquarius (1987, Michele Soavi)
Post by: ecc on 23 Jun 2008 - 15:43
Another World Entertainment has released a version of this.  Like the earlier EC Entertainment disc, it features letterboxed and open matte versions but the letterboxed version is 16:9.  The widescreen version has 5.1 and 2.0 English audio and 2.0 on the open matte version.  Any idea how the transfers compare to the older version (including AB's US DVD which I loaned out and never got back)?

It's easily the best looking release of "Stagefright" I've seen so far. :-\

Shame though there's not really anything to talk about added on the extras front, but I guess this is one of these movies for which a good pq and presentation is about as good as we'll ever get. ;D

If you like the movie or don't own it already, the AWE DVD is an essential purchase. ::)

I just watched this one on the AWE label.
Its an interresting movie, but its not a giallo IMO I would say that its a hardcore horror film.
And I'm sure that Michele Soavi must have spent endless hours whatching Dario Argento prior to making this one.

I've heard people say it's more of a slasher while other's keep pointing out the fact that it's a bit similar to The Killer Reserved Nine Seats.
In any case I like it...and the ending is typical for Soavi.

Well, prior to this, he was A.D. on TENEBRAE and PHENOMENA and he co-starred and A.D.'d (I think) on Lamberto Bava's BLADE IN THE DARK.

Id say it is more of a slasher than giallo. Its about the only good slasher i have seen.

Yeah I would say to call this one a giallo is a little tenuous. I got the impression that it was a slasher "quicky" in answer to the American films that were prevalent during the eighties. Producer D'Amato was never one to miss a trick, hence his cashing-in on NINE AND A HALF WEEKS with a slew of erotic dramas in the late 80s. There are definitely gialloesque elements though.

I quite like this film. I have the very lacklustre EC Entertainment version which is non-anamorphic.

To be honest, I really like Stagefright. I remember me and my dad renting it out on video round about '89 and it scaring the hell out of me. Only crap thing about it is the end
where the killer opens his eyes after being shot through the forehead...nonsense
- otherwise pretty solid in my book. In fact, I'd go as far to say that it's probably my favourite slasher from the mid to late 1980's.

It doesn't have much in the way of competition though, does it  :-\

Errrr......Well, I'd guess that "Opera" would be some fairly heavy competition!  ::)

Nevertheless, "Stagefright" will always have a special place as about the only true "Italian style Slasher" I can think of. ;) ;) ;)

Shit! Sorry! I thought we were talking about horror films made in the 80's. I never realised the discussion was about the late 80's.

Yeah, OPERA is really good but what I was trying to say is that the decent films were fewer and further between as the eighties progressed, Peter. There are some wonderful Italian horror and gialli from the 80s, but not many of them, sadly.

There are loads of great ones in the 80's but the majority of them are early 80's.

Wasn't the comparison to late 80's Italian horrors?

It was, but I would disagree to a certain degree. Yes, there were some great horrors and gialli from the likes of Fulci and Argento, but even in the early eighties, there was very little else, IMHO.

I just watched Deodato's PHANTOM OF DEATH (1988) last night and thought it was excellent, especially, Donnagio's score.  ::)  Not a big fan of Michael York's either but he was great.  ;)  Also, you can't go wrong with Fenech and Pleasance.  :-X

I agree - definitely one of the better efforts from the late 80s.
