Title: Savage Three / Fango bollente (Vittorio Salerno, 1975)
Post by: vigilanteforce on 10 Oct 2008 - 11:31
This is one of my favorite Italian crime/sleaze movies and thought it needed a thread of its own! Here are some thoughts on the film, copied from my blog. Just received a good-looking Spanish letterboxed print and dubbing it to English. The English-speaking print is fullscreen and has Greek subs, new one will be subtitle-free and 16:9!

Ovidio Mainardi (Joe Dallesandro) and his 2 friends work together at a computer company. Gradually they start going insane beacuse of the routine everyday life within a rotten society and the effect of computers. Their frustrations and oppression they have gone though make them start killing random people, including a prostitute and her pimp, a taxi driver and eventually Ovidio's own wife. This is a really demented film but incredibly well-made and original. The social commentary really works in this film. The three young men seem to be killing random people for no reason although they certainly have a motive. SAVAGE THREE describes a situation that rarely happens in real life but anything is possible right? There is plenty of violence and gore here but there seems to be a good excuse for all this mayhem to take place so in my opinion it is fully justified. Dallesandro does a PERFECT job as the disturbed Ovidio and proves his critis wrong. He can really act and does great particularly in sleazy roles. Enrico Maria Salerno (RANSOM, NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS, also brother of the director) is great as expected. The upbeat, progressive hard rock score by Franco Campanino (THE CLIMBER) is a winner. I'm not sure as if SAVAGE THREE can be categorized as a standard Italian crime film as it avoids the expected bank robberies and car-chases, but it will definitely appeal to fans of the genre, specially to the ones with a taste for sleaze.

Never seen this. Sounds great. Anything with Dallesandro is always worth a look, IMO. Let me know when your new version is ready... will be up for one of those.

Is this from Spanish tv print or the vhs,Lefteris?

Its from Spanish VHS (as FANGO CALIENTE/FURIA HOMICIDA). If it was from TV it would look even better of course. But still its a huge improvement over the Greek fullscreen print most of us here have...I have finished dubbing it and will enhance it for 16:9 playback.

Gianfranco De Grassi works now in a bookshop in Rome.
He's a nice guy, very different from the kind of characters he used to play in movies!  ;D

I know a cut version was broadcast on Italian TV, but does anyone know what's missing?
Title: Re: Savage Three / Fango bollente (Vittorio Salerno, 1975)
Post by: DjangoLi on 31 Mar 2009 - 22:12
Hi Dr!

My wife painstakingly created a composite (I say painstakingly because the Spanish print was 16:9 enhanced while the Italian broadcast wasn't... It took a while but she perservered after I gave up after 5 minutes...I guess women really are the brighter species - or I'm just thick! - probably the latter)

I should add that it was you who sent me the uncut version so it wouldn't have been possible without you! Cheers mate, thoroughly appreciated  ;)

What's cut?

Hmmm.... just about every single scene of violence is missing.

From what I can remember, here are the cuts:

1) Riot at the football stadium > shot of the guy being punched in the face and the shot of him falling to the floor (oddly enough, later in the police station they show a photo of the dead guy... you wouldn't know this watching the Italian print so it's a very silly cut... What is perhaps bewildering is that it's just some bloke being punched - it's not graphic at all. We didn't even notice it at first when we were watching both prints side by side)

2) In the laboratory > shot of rats fighting each other (we didn't notice this till recently, a split second shot of the dead rat is missing and it's also missing from the composite, no big deal to be honest. I assume it's actually a fake dead rat, still not sure, eitherway if it was real then we did our bit for the RSPCA.

3) Long shot of the Joe Dallesandro's character leaving work and getting a lift from his friends.

4) Screwdriver attack > the Italian print cuts out a few seconds before the truck driver is stabbed, and then resumes after the attack is over.

5) Pimp attack > shot of the screwdriver in the nads' is missing.

6) The entire scene in the warehouse where they kill the two women (one with a forklift truck) is completely missing.

7) Aftermath with the bodies hanging from the statues (not sure if this is actually the pimp/prostitute? I could be wrong here... Anyway, there's a shot of the detective looking up at the corpses hanging on the statues - this is completely missing.

I'm missing one shot I think, but these are the main ones.

What gets me is why these scenes were cut in the first place? Italy isn't notorious for its censorship like dear old England - I can only guess that a) it was cut to be shown in the afternoon (unlikely) or b) it was cut at the time of release in the 1970s. I remember in an interview my wife and I conducted with Enzo Castellari that he described a certain period in the seventies when violence (of any kind) was somehow outlawed in films  - this came about when he told me why there aren't any guns used in the Inglorious Bastards (is that true?) I can only guess this period really didn't last long (months? a year?) and so Fango Bollente was caught up in this mess - this might also explain why it has never been released on video/dvd in Italy. I dunno... it's just speculation.

Btw/ Let me know if you want a copy? It came out quite well to be honest - you can also hear it in Italian so you don't have to suffer the terrible English dubbing.

More or less true yes. This odd rule came to pass halfway through the films shoot and that's why the second half of the film doesn't feature any guns.

Hi Djangoli,

I would LOVE a copy! As I've said before, and I'll probably say again, it's one of my all-time favourites. Thank you posting that list of (crazy) cuts, and thank your wife for all the time and energy that she put into creating a composite - it must have been hard for her to watch Joe Dallesandro over and over, for hours and hours  :-\ (It was my girlfriend who got me into watching Joe, and I'm glad she did - I love his films). Thank you!

I need some help folks... DrMiaow has asked me for a copy of the subbed composite but I can only burn xvid files and he can't play them. Would a kind soul (preferably in the UK) be willing to send him a dvdr of it?

My pc is vintage - re-encoding to dvd would a) take ages and b) probably come out shit.

If I had my modded xbox here in Italy it wouldn't be a problem but it's back in London.  ???

Thanks to Luca I finally got to see DjangoLi and his wife's handiwork. They've done a fantastic job. It's the first time I'd seen it in the original Italian, and while I'm a big fan of Joe, it knocks spots off the dubbed version: the script is sharper, the humour is darker, and the sleaze, well...

Thank you!  ;)

I finally saw this SUPERB flick...extremely entertaining story, creative killings and Joe Dallesandro showing off with lots of different facial expressions -> just awesome! His dubbed voice reminds me of psychos such as Werner Pochath or Kinski and makes his character even more dreadful. Salerno is a solid cop, too!  It's a winner!! ::)

You do realise there are at least three very noticeable grammatical errors in the two sentences you've just written?

Of course, we've been through all this before so I'm not going to make a drama out of this - just a few points:

1) You only ever translate INTO your first language. (Your first language obviously isn't English)

2) I have asked you (politely) many times before not to tamper with my work (precisely for the above reason)

3) If someone wants fixed subs for this new DVD all they have to do is shoot me a message/send me a copy of the film and I'll happily revise/re-time them. (but nobody ever does...)

4) As before, please ignore points 1 to 3, and just go ahead and do it anyway...  ::)

Morning folks  ;D

...oh, and Wayne, please don't remove my name (nicknames) from the end of the subs - do what you want to them, but please don't delete my name from the work - the rest I can live with (or have learnt to accept!  ;D )

First of all, yes, the grammer in those 2 sentences was god-awful, i am very sorry for that. Didn´t proof-read before posting.

1) I have only translated a few sentences in "roma l´altra ....". I never did a whole translation of any movie. Besides, there is no big german community for those kind of flicks ... so why even bother.

2) I´ve never received any kind of message from you. I only did the "roma ..." re-timing and there was no indication that they were done by you. Maybe some other douche removed the name ... i have the utmost respect for your work and i am more than greatful that we now can enjoy the movies we otherwise couldn´t.

3) Well good to know. The sole reason i did the re-timing was to give something back to this great community ... just a thanks for all the recommendations i got here. Not to steal anybodys "thunder". If i offended you by doing so ... i´m very sorry again.

With that said, it would be greatly appreciated if you re-time/re-visit the subs for "Fango bollente" when the new dvd is out.  ;)

Marcus and Kai already hinted at it in an almost subtle way in the audio commentary for NO, IL CASO E FELICEMENTE RISOLTO (NO, THE CASE IS HAPPILY RESOLVED)... It was pretty obvious that we wouldn't only get NO, IL CASO from our dear Vittorio Salerno and leave FANGO BOLLENTE (THE SAVAGE THREE) in the drawer! We'll release this very violent crime movie in the "near" future on Blu-ray and DVD. Unfortunately, the film's negative is in a, let's just say, catastrophic state, and in need of a very extensive restoration. So the release will take some time. We will soon post more information on the extras, though.

Best news in ages! Can't wait! ::)

I have the Spanish and Greek tapes in case you need cover scans for your galleries.

Our editions will finally be released on September, 8 and are now up for pre-order:

What in the eyes of datacenter employee Ovidio begins as a seemingly harmless experiment with rats soon escalates more and more into unimaginable excesses of violence. Be it in the Juventus soccer stadium or the streets and squares of Turin – nobody seems to be safe from Ovidio and his two friends Giacomo and Peppe. On their hunt for the ultimate thrill, the savage three try to escape the dreariness of their everyday lives. Only the already tired and maimed commissioner Santagà instinctively anticipates the destructive urge dwelling inside Ovidio. A psychologically unfathomable game ensues between the two – until the bitter end…

As one of the most unusual polizieschi of all times, Fango Bollente is at the same time an orgy of uninhibited violence and sex as well as a social and psychological study. Director Vittorio Salerno unleashes pop-art icon Joe Dallesandro, accompanied by wild progressive rock, upon the Turinese. Fango Bollente is an extremely brutal film which nevertheless manages to unfurl in a subtle and detailed fashion the atmosphere and background of Italy’s “Years of Lead”. One of the highlights of the genre that is still highly topical.

Italian sound + English and German subtitles

Both editions (BD + DVD) include:
Featurette* „The Savage One“ featuring Joe Dallessandro
Featurette** „Rat Eat Rat“ featuring Vittorio Salerno and Martine Brochard
Audio Commentary*** by Film Experts Pelle Felsch and Christian Keßler
Booklet (German/English) by Robert Zion
* English w/ optional German subtitles; ** Italian w/ optional German and English subtitles; *** German w/ optional English subtitles

Here you can take a look at a few screenshots from our upcoming FANGO BOLLENTE (SAVAGE THREE). The negative wasn't treated very lovingly and was once again in very rough shape. Water stains and scratches everywhere and oftentimes parts that looked like a snow storm made of specs, dust and dirt. The result of this extremely long and extensive restoration makes us very happy, however!

Well, my copy never turned up at all. Has anyone used Mediaquelle.com before?
Thats where I got it from, but has anyone else had this problem with them?
If not, what other places can I get this? Besides Diabolik and Strange Vice.
