Title: What Are Your Favourite Spaghettis?
Post by: Paul on 06 Jul 2007 - 10:44
From Wikipedia

Spaghetti Western is a nickname for a broad sub-genre of Western film that emerged in the mid-1960s, so named because most were produced by Italian studios. Originally they had in common the Italian language, low budgets, and a recognizable highly fluid, violent, and minimalist cinematography that eschewed (some said "demythologized") many of the conventions of earlier Westerns — partly intentionally, partly as a result of the work being done in a different cultural background and with limited funds. The term was originally used disparagingly, but by the 1980s many of these films came to be held in high regard, particularly because it was hard to ignore the influence they had in redefining the entire idea of a western.

The best-known and perhaps archetypal Spaghetti Westerns were the Man With No Name trilogy (or the Dollars Trilogy) directed by Sergio Leone, starring the American then-TV actor Clint Eastwood and with musical scores composed by Ennio Morricone (all of whom are now synonymous with the genre): A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). Atypically for the genre, the last had a relatively high budget in excess of one million USD. His following film after the so-called "trilogy" was Once Upon a Time in the West, which is often lumped in with the previous three for its extremely similar style and accompanying score by Morricone, only differing by the absence of Clint Eastwood in the starring role.

The films were primarily shot in the Andalucia region of Spain, and in particular the Tabernas Desert of Almería, because it greatly resembles the landscape of the American Southwest. (A few were shot on Sardinia.) Because of the desert setting and the readily available southern Spanish extras, a usual theme in Spaghetti Westerns is the Mexican Revolution, Mexican bandits, and the border region shared by Mexico and the US.

One of the most prolific of Italian exploitation genres, the spaghetti western is an essential part of 60s and 70s cinema. Here are some of my favourite flicks:

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly (1966, Sergio Leone)
Once Upon A Time In The West (1969, sergio Leone)
A Fistful Of Dynamite (1971, Sergio Leone)
Keoma (1977, Enzo G Castellari)
Django (1966, Sergio Corbucci)
Navajo Joe (1966, Sergio Corbucci)
The Mercenary (1968, Sergio Corbucci)
Companeros! (1970, Sergio Corbucci)
White, Yellow & Black (1975, Sergio Corbucci)
Django Kill! (1967, Guilio Questi)

Another genre I love - but i haven't seen nearly enough. It's a genre that seems fairly poorly represented on DVD. Either that or I'm looking in all the wrong places!

But anyway, of what I've seen, the following are firm favourites:

Django
Four of the Apocalypse
Cut Throats Nine
Keoma
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
For a Few Dollars More
Django Kill! ...If You Live, Shoot
Sabata
Death Rides a Horse
Run Man Run
Mannaja
Once Upon a Time in the West

Pallbearer, great to see the original Sartana movie amongst your favourites. ;)

I've been in a dispute with Hunchback for many moons who claims that LIGHT THE FUSE...SARTANA IS COMING is the best in the series.  :)

BTW how are you with understanding the complex plot in IF YOU MEET SARTANA PRAY FOR YOUR DEATH?   >:(

I probably watch "Have a good funeral my friend, Sartana will pay" the most
That possibly has the coolest Bruno Nicolai soundtrack.

I think my copy maybe cut because the ending is so abrupt.

But for me what makes the original  a cut above the others is the challenging plot(on another forum we went to great lengths to pull apart the plot in order to understand the movie better and i'm sure we pretty much cracked it),the gothic horror atmosphere  with Sartana as this ghostly figure.

And William Berger as  Lasky is Sartanas best ever nemesis. :)

Yes it certainly does have the best soundtrack of the series.
The film is my second favorite of the series. It has the least action of all of them but it makes up for it by displaying the most elaborate action set pieces (The lumberjack attack, the coffin shootout on horseback) and being the most comical.

My favorite is still LIGHT THE FUSE...SARTANA IS COMING.

Yeah that's a great listen. Even comes with the soundtrack for HIS NAME WAS CEMETERY which is a soundtrack I'm not crazy about save for the main theme.
I advise anybody to pick that up from MovieGoods!

I think that may possibly be Carmineos best western. :P

Theres not that much between this and HAVE A GOOD FUNERAL but the brilliant opening sequence, church organ cannon and of course Alfie the robot clinch it for me.

I AM SARTANA YOUR ANGEL OF DEATH is the least impressive, but i'd sure like to see a decent widescreen print of the George Hilton entry.

No doubt! ;)

The Hilton outing was the first one I saw and holds a special place in my heart because of it.
It's never boring it just suffers from having the smallest budget of the whole series (I don't even think Hilton pulls out on gadget during the show! The whole gimick this time is "where will he hide his pea-shooter next?").
My favorite part is the opening 25 minutes though. It's like a mini-movie before the actual film starts.

I didn't have a problem with Southwood's waspy portrayal of, Sartana's rival, Sabbath. Thought he was one of the best things about the movie and their final showdown is pure brilliance on Carnimeo's part ;) a shame it was all staged ???

Kult Video usually stock the X-Rated DVDs, it'd probably be cheaper from them too.

I haven't had time to look for it but here's a link to their Spaghetti Western section...

I love everyone's animated signatures, I'll have to work on my own this weekend.

I'll add Drummer of Vengeance to my list.

I thought the revenge set up was excellent (and sure it had shades of For a Few Dollars More) but I really liked how insane Ty Hardin got when he was in disguise. It'll be nice to get a better print than the  Televista/Substance piece of merde.

Been watching lots of these recently, and I'll add Tinto Brass' YANKEE to my list, as well as BANDIDOS (Here's to a better version on DVD eventually - the German NEW dvd looks pretty rough/compressed all to hell).

I'm also currently a big fan of Anthony Steffen.  DJANGO IL BASTARDO, W DJANGO, and UNA LUNGA FILA DI CROCI were all nice surprises, so now I watch any Spag. Western with him in it, and haven't been disappointed yet.

I'm relatively new to this genre, so I'll make a short list.

Yankee (Adolfo Celi is FANTASTIC!)
Keoma
Fistful of Dollars
Face to Face
Death Rides a Horse
Good the Bad and the Ugly
Once Upon a Time in the West

It's a short list, but I'm constantly adding to my Spaghetti collection.

Anyone seen any episodes of the Duccio Tessari hosted documentary series ARRIVANO I VOSTRI from 1983?Got 2 of them but i'd love to see the other 8.

Here's the entry from Marco Giusti's 'Dizionario del Western all'Italiano' book:
'Arrivano i vostri ovvero Storia avventurosa del western all’italiana, un programma di Duccio Tessari, con la collaborazione di Isabella Bruno e di Orio Calidron, musiche di Guido e Maurizio De Angelis, realizzazione L.P. Film, regia di Isabella Bruno (Rai2, 10 puntate di 60 minuti: dal 24 novembre al 25 dicembre 1983). Interviste a Age, Enzo Barboni, Maria Barony, Sergio Bergonzelli, Laura Betti, Mel Brooks, Enzo G. Castellari, David Carradine, Franco Castellano, Sergio Corbucci, Damiano Damiani, Mark Damon, Sergio Donati, Eduardo Fajardo, Paulo Roberto Falcao, Henry Fonda, Lucio Fulci, Gianni Garko, Giuliano Gemma, Franco Giraldi, Terence Hill, Klaus Kinski, Stelvio Massi, Tomas Milian, Franco Nero, Domenico Paolella, Leo Pescarolo, Pipolo, Fernando Sancho, Sergio Sollima, Lionel Stander, Rod Steiger, Tonino Valerii, Lee Van Cleef, Luciano Vincenzoni, Neno Zamperla, Manuel Zarzo'.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly
Once upon a Time in the West
A Fistful of Dollars
My Name is Nobody
The Great Silence
A Bullet For the General
Death Rides a Horse
Companeros
They Call Me Trinity
Trinity is STILL my name
Django

pretty much the most popular westerns...i haven't delved into the genre too much aside from leone, corbucci, and a few others here and there. it seems the drop off in quality is steeper from the top directors in spaghetti westerns, than it was for gialli...

Faccia a Faccia
Drummer of Vengeance
Blindman
If You Meet Sartana, Pray for your Death
Django
Keoma
Dead Men Ride

Spaghettis are my least watched Italian genre film right now (of the four filones I collect/watch).  I go in cycles with these.

That said, if Franco Nero EVER plays a mountain man in a western, I would honor him accordingly. ;) 8)

Too bad Fulci & Nero never filmed the source material for Jeremiah Johnson (or even John Milius' original script). I could see them going all the way with the cannibalism/violence to men/nature.

What about ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST Jamie
You know, I purposely left it off. Not because I really dislike it or anything. It does have a good cast (Im a big Bronson fan) and many striking shots. But for some reason it's never had the impact on me like Leone's other movies. I think the locations are one reason, it seems almost 'too American' to me. I love American Westerns, and I love Leone movies, but in this case I don't find myself wanting to rewatch it over and over.

I kind of like it more for the 'set pieces' (for lack of a better term). Like the scene when Claudia is laying down on the bed and there's that shot from above, that is really beautiful. My all time favorite movie is GBU (well, and Diabolik too!) and I think Leone is a genius so I don't mean to say anything negative about the movie. I know a lot of people have it around the top of their lists. But for me, Id just rather pick any of his other Westerns before it.

Jamie sir,

you are far kinder than I.

Outside of the Argento visuals for Frank and Fabio Testi's stunts, I loathe this film.  >:(

I appreciate what Leone did for filmmaking and the western and my own world-view but after seeing this movie, my opinion of the man collapsed.

I just watched "For a Few Dollars More", and I have to say that is by far my favorite Spaghetti.  In my mind that is everything a spaghetti should be.  Gian Maria Volonte is the greatest bad guy to ever slither across the screen.  Plus the coolness of Lee Van Cleef when he strikes the match on the back of Klaus Kinski, to light his pipe is awe inspiring.  Clint Eastwood is the weakest aspect of the whole film and he is far from weak.  I'd never really watched too many westerns for the simple fact that my grandfather watched a ton of American westerns, and I couldn't get into them.  However Spaghetti Westerns are a completely different genre.  With that said, I'm gonna watch Death Sentence and Taste for Killing today

I'm only beginning to enjoy spaghetti westerns, so I haven't seen that many so far.
I prefer the darker, more bizarre ones:
matalo
django kill - if you live, shoot!
cemetary without crosses (scott walker sings the title song - what more could you want?)
and god said to cain
the great silence
once upon a time in the west
vengeance
django the bastard (garrone)
forgotten pistolero (Baldi) - orestes in the wild west, anyone?
Yankee
Death Sentence (Lafranchi)

this one sounds interesting, too:
The Stranger That Kneels Beside the Shadow of a Corpse (U.S.A.) | Tote werfen keine Schatten / Inginocchiati straniero... I cadaveri non fanno ombra!
apparently, it was announced by wild east but not released. any info anyone?

I feel a little like a tresspasser here on this thread, I am a complete SW novice - I only have a handful, the well known ones, so I'm busy writing all these recommendations down. Besides the Leones, I love The Great Silence - its one of those films I tend to throw on for late night screenings... Another memorable film for me is a 1971 Spanish/British production called A Town Called Bastard, with Robert Shaw. Its no Django Kill, but its a strange weird film all the same...

- SHADOW OF SARTANA (the almost deconstructed nature of this western from Demofilo Fidani brings forth the classic elements of Spaghetti Westerns via something like SO SWEET, SO DEAD and it's own act of minimalist genre qualities)
- THE DIRTY OUTLAWS (excellent magnification of violence)
- A BULLET FOR SANDOVAL (i think this is easily one of Hilton's best - concentrated and vicious)
- MASSACRE TIME
- DJANGO, KILL
- I AM SARTANA, TRADE YOUR GUNS FOR A COFFIN
- CALIFORNIA
- THE STRANGERS GUNDOWN
- THE RETURN OF RINGO
- VIVA DJANGO

I have just seen Four of the apocalypse, and it was quite strange, with topics I did not anticipate (SPOILERS!!!!! ------------ the comic relief of a town inhabited only by men, cannibalism etc),
but I liked it a lot! And Tomas Milian kicked ass as usual. :D And the "duel" at the end was beautiful: simple, crude, raw, like a euro-western should be.

I have thought about this for a while, and whilst the Sergio Leone movies are really great and epic, my vote right now goes to "Compañeros", which easily has the best theme song ever in a spaghetti western. At least for me. Not to mention the great cast, by the way. I don't really like either Milian or Nero, but in this movie, because neither one of them is 'the star' it really works. And Jack Palance makes it even better.  :-X

I don't think this is an actual trailer, but it's a really great video regardless.

My favourites are:
Mannaja
Lucky Johnny (A really dark western from 1975, the main character picks fights with people to help his grandpa's cemetery business, a nasty violent western)
Last of the Badmen
Barrel full of Dollars ( IMO Fidanis best, and the crazy Kinski )
Dead men Ride!
Il Mercanario (The Arena..)
No Room To Die
Django the Bastard
Keoma
Wrath of God
Vengeance
The Holy Ghost trilogy
Black Jack
Ben and Charlie
Born to Kill
They Call him Cemetery
One dollar too many ( I don't know why, but I really like this mix of comedy and shootings)

Lucky Johnny is quite grim, and its told in segments, but the biggest one is the graveyard one.

Best spaghetti ive seen in a long time is The Ruthless Four/Ognuno per se.
I came across clips of it on a documentary called Kinski in Italy. Its available on a Koch dvd and a French release both with English audio.
Hope it gets a BD or English release one day.

It looks like someone is getting into his Spaghetti Westerns. When he's not being fat and depressed...
