Title: Eurocrime! The Kickstarter Thread
Post by: MikeMalloy on 30 Oct 2009 - 13:05
Okay, so Jonny came up with a EUROCRIME! fundraising idea, and with the input and help from exec producer Kier-La Janisse, it became a page over at kickstarter.com.

Since we have many outlets and broadcasters interested in the doc, but with all of them asking to see something finished, we though we'd try this out. (And we're not alone, TONS of projects are seeking to get across the finish line by this method; with the industry being so cautious these days and not offering much in the way of completion moneys, it's not hard to see why.)

Anyway, it works through Amazon Payments, so it's an easy process (about 1 min.) for anyone with an Amazon account (and that's worldwide).

A lot of you guys on this board have done so much for this doc already, so I'm just hoping you'll spread the word, but all fan goodwill is appreciated (it's gotten us pretty far already). And there are some producer credits to be had, for those interested:

Those with a Facebook account can easily sign in to Kickstarter, takes a couple of clicks and it's done.

Just posted about this at Maniacs. I don't really frequent many other forums so if anybody knows of anywhere else likely to gain donations then I suggest you also do so there.

I'm not really being that altruistic though. I just really want to see this film. ::)

Thanks for the offer but I'm a married man.  :-\

Hopefully if Xmas doesn't work out too expensive I'll up my pledge at some point. It's a worthy cause.

Who knew the filmmaker was as exciting as the film? Maybe I should've come up with a different fundraising scheme altogether...

Here's hoping you meet the required funds, it would be a shame if the project fell through this close to completion.

Hey Mike, it would be a smart idea to offer the distribution rights for a bigger fund. I know several companies who would support you with a big amount but they are more interested in copyrights instead of producer credits.

Don't blame me for that. Just want to give some "other" input mate  :D ;)

Thanks everybody (esp. Broonage and Funktion most recently); your goodwill won't go to waste!

(The Kickstarter drive is just one piece of the pie; we're talking to more potential investors, and we have *numerous* interested parties all asking to see the finished work. But if someone knows a distribb who wants to talk to us at this stage, feel free to pass them along. Grazie!)

Also just in case anyone was wondering... You do not have to pay any money upfront if you make a pledge.

The cash you pledge will only be deducted from your account if the target amount is met.

Sheesh, just noticed this.

Thanks so much for the thought, Canisius. We're just trying out Kickstarter because we thought it'd be most convenient to everyone, so if it's not, don't sweat it. (But if you really, really feel compelled to be a part, you can always drop me a PM!  :-\ )

What does it matter what he charges; the guy used his money to make a beautiful gesture towards the genre!  ::)

I met another serious genre fan yesterday by phone who just made another $3k donation, and his friend matched him! Wow!

Thanks to you LLaLers who were some of the earliest donors and who got the momentum going strong. The drive will go through January (let's see how far we can take it!), and then the prizes will be sorted out at that time.

Excited!

Just noticed that the target has been met plus more!

What does this mean for the project now Mike? Will you be able to pay for all the clips now?
Title: Re: Eurocrime! The Kickstarter Thread
Post by: MikeMalloy on 30 Nov 2009 - 12:54
Will you be able to pay for all the clips now?

I don't know that we ever had the expectation that the Kickstarter amount would cover *all* the clips. (That's why we worded it "to begin licensing clips".) But it'll obviously be much stronger to present the rough cut to distributors with partially cleared clip usage (or at least a clearances budget) than to present a rough cut and just say, "we haven't cleared any of the clips we used."

Mike, can't you change the goal to a bigger amount?
If people follow the link and see the goal as already achieved, they probably won't pledge anything. You may be losing some funds because of that.

On the other hand it might seem like a greedy move to the folks who helped reach the initial target?

You're right.

Maybe Mike can put a note somewhere in there saying the $10.000 is the amount needed to clear part of the clips, and that any amount over this is welcome and useful?

Thanks for taking such an interest, Funktion. Hopefully, it's understood that all donations will be put to good use, and the higher the amount, the more liberal the use of clips.

What?!?! I was planning to blow the entire wad on licensing this clip of Nero fighting in his jockstrap from THE SALAMANDER (whadda I care that it's not true eurocrime; it's got Nero in a jockstrap). Thought I might license it to run in its entirety, repeatedly throughout the doc.

You don't approve?

There's been a couple of updates posted on the Facebook page, sorry for not carrying them over to here.

http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/eurocrime

Quote
Eurocrime actor (and EUROCRIME interviewee) John P. Dulaney has launched a YouTube channel that includes, among other things, some of his vintage 8mm footage from his days in Italian cinema. Searches for "Richard Harrison" and "Tomas Milian" will produce some good results, and there's apparently much more to come: http...://www.youtube.com/user/johndulaney We are very pleased to now have permission to include some of Mr. Dulaney's footage in the documentary.

Quote
We considered a celebrity narrator for the doc but are now eager to get certain sequences locked down with final takes of the narration (especially now that there is the possibility of file corruption). So we're talking to a very talented voice artist who has been a great friend to this project. He has the right tough-...guy urgency to his voice and is well-versed in Italian pronunciations.
