Title: About to place an order with DVD.IT
Post by: MarcMorris on 08 Dec 2009 - 19:40
And I wondered what has has come out over the past 6 months or so (with English option) I should be adding to my order?

Is what you're ordering not available at Kult Video? They're a lot cheaper and a lot more reliable. I stopped ordering from DVD.IT because of orders taking weeks to get sent and not getting any replies to emails.

Most of what I want isn't available there sadly. ;(

Aside from DVD.it, who else would you suggest? Their prices aren't that bad but I do need these discs pronto, unless anybody can help me out with these?

IL CARTAIO
OPERA
LA SINDROME DI STENDHAL (2 discs)

Drop Mario over at Kult an email and I am sure he will be able to let you know how long it would take for the discs to get to you.

I think I still have Medusa two disc release of LA SINDROME DI STENDHAL but I would need to double check on Thursday/Friday when I get back.  I can lend it to you if you need it for any particular purpose.

IL CARTAIO
OPERA
LA SINDROME DI STENDHAL (2 discs)

I haven't ordered from them but as far as the Argento discs go:

IL CARTAIO doesn't have an English track.  The Czech disc (the first one out of the gate) has English 5.1 and DTS.  The UK disc has just 5.1 and no extras, I think.  The US DVD has a commentary but it is a PAL-NTSC conversion (as was their concurrent release of TRAUMA and probably also DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK?)

Cecchi Gori released OPERA initially in a 1.85:1 anamorphic release with Italian 2.0 stereo.  The subsequent I MAESTRI DELLA PAURA sell-through release listed the same specs on the back of the cover but was actually like the UK disc in that it had the Italian and Cannes English dub as well as English subtitles and was anamorphic 2.35:1.  I got mine on eBay.  I'm not sure what version you would get through DVD.it or Kult Video.

Medusa's 2 disc of LA SINDROME DI STENDHAL has separate English and Italian versions with Italian 5.1 and 2.0 and English subs on the Italian version but it is cropped to 1.78:1 while the English version has 2.0 sound.  There are some interviews and a backstage featurette with no subs.  Blue Underground's 2 disc set has the English and Italian audio on the same track and is in the original aspect ratio.  It's color-timing also looks more accurate (the Medusa transfer looks too cool and scrubbed free of grain).  The BluRay is supposed to be the best release.

I'm looking for the Italian tracks to go onto the upcoming UK re-issues which I'm working on.

The previous Arrow disc of Opera was in Italian and I still have a copy if you need it, mate.

Does the Blue Underground Blu ray of Stendhal Syndrome have Italian audio?

I've got it on the way and if it does i'll pop it round.

Does anybody know of a PAL release of OPERA with the later English dub?

Yes, it does have the Italian track.

I don't know of any PAL releases of OPERA with the second English dub.

Any ideas on the differences between the uncut version and the shorter Orion edit?

The Orion edit isn't edited as such.  Orion's TERROR AT THE OPERA was complete.  The Japanese LD and tape used that source but edited some scenes themselves (including the ending coda).  Australia also edited TERROR not for violence but for pacing (the perfume joke was cut).

Anyone know if the Dutch tape from Columbia is uncut?  It should be the second dub.

USA Southgate and Japanese OPERA tapes found. ;)

The Southgate tape is uncut (they also put out an R-rated version but I don't know what was cut).

Does it have the original stereo mix?

Yes, Southgate is in stereo and I think it sounds better than Anchor Bay's 2.0 downmix.

OK, thanks - another OPERA question - can somebody fill me in on the two endings?

Two endings?

As far as I know, the difference is that some prints (like the Japanese version and perhaps the US Orion print) lopped off the ending coda narrated by Betty (narrated by Argento himself in the Italian version) as she frees a lizard stuck in the grass.

Thanks, I'll compare the two.
