Title: Hammer House of Horror (TV Series, 1980)
Post by: prospero on 14 Jun 2010 - 16:45
Is this any good? I wonder whether I should buy.
It was released by Koch years ago and is still available, but now I've just found this dead cheap Dutch version:

I can't vouch for that particular release, I have the US boxset, but it's a fantastic series. Well worth a purchase.

I've got the UK box set and it's highly recommended.

Hammer House of Horror: The Complete Collection - Amazon.co.uk (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00006JNBO/ref=nosim?tag=lovelockandlo-21)

Less than £11 on Amazon too.  :'(

Synapse is reissuing it in the US as well.  I'm not sure how much better it will look over the old US set since the TV production only exists on video (although it was shot entirely on film unlike some of the other filmed-exterior/video-interior productions of the time) but Synapse always does a good job (they will be using IVC's proprietary technology which reportedly results in better conversions) and I believe they are preparing exclusive extras.

I was glad to see the old DVD set.  When the episodes played on TV in the US and came out on tape through Elvira's Thriller Video (with very memorable big box covers), they dropped MARK OF SATAN and the episodes were edited for violence and nudity as well as some other little bits for more commercial spots.

got myself the cheap UK version. since some reviews mention a booklet and extensive liner notes, this seems to be a stripped down cheapo version since it doesn't include either. its just two amarays in a slipcase. Image quality is very good.

though I have to say that the first episode, "The House That Bled To Death" rather bored me to death!.... :o

hope the series doesn't continue as tired as this .....

That’s the only one I’ve seen, recently, anyway. I caught it on TV a few years ago and thought it was really creepy.

Yep, I like this one too!

The Silent Scream and The Two Faces of Evil are pretty good.

I'm currently working my way through this, watching an episode every coupla days or so, in disc order....
i think charlie boy is my next one.. of the one's i've seen so far, besides the classic house that bled to death, its hard to pick a favorite as they are all good, but i really enjoyed The mark of satan, I'd also agree with jonny about the two he mentioned, especially silent scream  :-\

is this a threat?
I felt it was going on and on and on forever, with every single plot twist as predictable, the whole thing seemed to be running entierely by default.
hope the rest gets better than this!

I'm a huge fan of this series. Guardian of the Abyss is one of the best examples of spooky British tv you're likely to see.
Used to watch these at my Grandma's house on Saturday evenings after a trip to the toffee shop. I don't think life has ever been better since !

Essential viewing.

Great stuff. Some of the best contemporary stuff Hammer ever produced. 'The Two Faces of Evil' literally made me defecate when I twas a kid. Beautifully directed by Alan Gibson, with a great colour palette of white, black and red. And who could forget 'The House that Bled to Death'?

Love that first shot of the hitchhiker in "Two Faces of Evil" and who can forget the birthday party in "House that Bled to Death."

That first shot was bloody horrible. Didn't help that it was all shot where I grew up as a kid. The finale in the barn was shot literally up the road - 'Batty Bones Farm'. What a name...

When I was kid the Elvira hosted releases from Thriller Video were among the few horror "movies" I was allowed to rent from the video store, good thing because I always thought these were great; The Thirteenth Reunion and The House That Bled to Death were among my favorites. Not too long ago I picked up the old A&E box set of these and was pretty surprised by the nudity in the few that I've had a chance to watch because I never knew they were edited but I'm kinda torn, as fanatical as I can be about seeing things completely uncut I really miss Elvira's intros, intermissions, and conclusions, as corny as the jokes were!

Due in September from Synapse. When it says uncut with everything included etc does this mean they're the same versions as included on the Carlton box set from 10 years ago? (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hammer-House-Of-Horror-Collection/dp/B00006JNBO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1341325425&sr=8-1)

If so I'm guessing the only reason to double dip would be for the extras, which aren't THAT enticing to be honest! Are they new improved transfers?

Quote
Extras:

"Synapse’s five-DVD set will present the episodes in original airdate order, uncut with all the nudity and violence intact, presented in the original 1.33:1 broadcast aspect ratio. Supplements include:

• Episode introductions with film historian Shane M. Dallman
• “Grave Recollections: A Visit With Kathryn Leigh Scott” actress interview featurette
• “Hammer Housekeeping: A Visit With Mia Nadasi” actress interview featurette
• Animated still gallery"

That Synapse release sounds a bit drab. I've been waiting for it and to see if they would do it on Blu-Ray but I think I'll just rebuy the Carlton set now.

Just read back to ecc's post. I knew it was shot on film but if I'd have realised only video masters exist I wouldn't have bothered waiting!

I was the one who managed to get through 3 Hammer House of Horror box sets before finally getting one that worked, dunno if it was just the batch at HMV Brighton that were faulty or if it was more.

Presumably, this would require someone to rescan all of the film elements in HD and reassemble each of the episodes digitally.

Same here. I used to be allowed to watch pretty much anything, especially at weekends. Twins of Evil was a bit of an eye-opener back in those days...

So did ITV just repackage it then? I need to rebuy it sometime but I've been tempted by the Synapse version to see what it looks like. Always hovers around that £15 mark.

Do the original elements still exist though? I think the Synapse ones were from a tape master which was the best they could get hold of.

German set out in May.

Says remastered, don't know if it's newly remastered or if they are the same as the U.K. set and they were considered as such.

The pricing suits a BD set so I'm hoping Amazon are the ones that have it wrong. Can't see myself paying £35+ to buy it on DVD again and considering you can still get the old one for under a tenner new I'd be surprised if many others would.
