Title: Wild, Wild Planet / I criminali della galassia (Antonio Margheriti, 1965)
Post by: Inspector Tanzi on 21 Jan 2011 - 00:18
Tony Russel, Lisa Gastoni and Franco Nero star in the first of two 60's sci-fi films directed by Antonio Margheriti in which they play the same characters.

In this one Massimo Serato plays an evil scientist who wants to try and make some sort of superior beings, Gastoni being one of the victims he wants to somehow fuse himself with. Naturally it's up to Russel and company put a stop to his dastardly plan.

It's quite a crazy film and definately worth a watch, especially for Margheriti's minature work some of which is fantastic and some downright laughable.

I'm looking forward to seeing the other one, War of the Planets(I diafanoidi vengono da Marte).

I wanted to take some screen grabs but it has some sort of protection on the disc that won't let me do it. It's possible for regular Warner releases but not with those from the Archive range for some reason?

DVDBeaver review (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/dvd_reviews53/wild_wild_planet.htm)

I'm guessing the source is the TCM print.

I thought there were three or four in this series.

I recall a Video Watchdog article/interview about Margheriti which discussed these films.  Apparently, one of them at the time was impossible to find on video.  I think it was SNOW DEVILS.  Has it popped up since then?

Also, I think one had the alternate title PLANET ON THE PROWL, which has me imagining an planet stalking people through space (maybe dodging behind other planets when they look over their shoulder).

I've never seen SNOW DEVILS anywhere, WAR BETWEEN THE PLANETS has been released on dvd by Dark Sky on a double bill with CREATION OF THE HUMANOIDS (Whatever that is, some U.S. thing).

SNOW DEVILS is 'out there' from television screenings.

THE SNOW DEVILS is different from the others in the series in that it is largey earth-bound but I found all the action in the Himalayas and the green-skinned aliens to be terrific fun. It's a lot more enjoyable than the very boring WAR BETWEEN THE PLANETS a.k.a. PLANET ON THE PROWL. The only problem is the final half-hour, which is dull and anti-climatic, but otherwise THE SNOW DEVILS is well-worth watching.

Axelmusic seem to do that quite often, I found a few Televista discs hiding under original language titles, as though they don't want anyone to find them!

Damn, that's the short version, it was shown as a four part mini series originally.
