I'm wanting to try and keep the Gialli list as simple as possible and try and take out films that blur the line a little. If you get what I mean.

For instance SPIDER LABYRINTH has some giallo elements but it's mainly a horror film and because the vast majority is horror I'd not include it on the list, whereas some people would.

By the same turn I'd also suggest films that are crime/giallo hybrids should perhaps just go in the crime list, CALLING ALL POLICE CARS and RING OF DEATH for example.

PHANTOM OF DEATH, that's more of a horror I'd say so should that stay on the list?

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I agree Jonny. I've seen Hitch Hike listed as a giallo, but could never understand why, so keeping these blurry ones separate certainly make it more clear.

I reckon Italian horror and crime films of the period which have the whodunnit vibe or involve multiple murders should be listed for the sake of completeness.

What completeness? A complete list of Italian horrors where people get killed?

What I don't want is for someone new to giallo looking at the list and picking out SPIDER LABYRINTH and thinking that's a typical giallo. It will skew their whole expectations of the genre.

Surely I'm not alone in this?

You'll be saying we should add SUSPIRIA to the list next...

I agree with that; although I'm really stringent on what is or isn't a giallo. I'd remove half the films out of the Luther Smith book.

This is something I've been thinking for a while. Should we really take what is in that book as 'gospel'? If truth be told Adrian never said all the films in his book were gialli, just that it's somehow beeen accepted over the years that they are.

Maybe it's time to set out a new, updated, list that just has films that fit our agenda as regards what a giallo is?

True. Maybe we should just crack on as is and have a 'Grey area' section at the bottom of the list?

With a caveat somewhere saying something like 'these films are often included in lists of gialli, but in our opinion they do not fit the criteria'. That way then you could list films like Hitch-Hike and stop people saying 'why haven't you listed xxxxxx?'.

When I said 'completeness' I meant including all the borderline titles but just didn't articulate it very well! What you've both said since sounds perfect.

I'm experiencing the same problem with Giallo fansub project - I'm using two books as a guide:

Luca Rea: I Colori del Buio: Cinema Thrilling Italiano 1930 to 1980 and Adrian Luther Smith's book (which I didn't even know I owned?!)

The problem is a lot of films blur the line - as Jonny points out with Eye in the Labyrinth (Psychological giallo perhaps?). The same for A Tutte Le Auto...Polizia (Calling all Cars) which I also agree is better placed in the Eurocrime genre. Both books list it as a 'Giallo'.

I'm curious to see how this list progresses - it would be good to see a more accurate list than the ones presented by either of those two books.

The advantage we have here is that we have two possible places to put borderline titles so at least they're covered; it's a privilege that Luther Smith wasn't afforded.

Re: Adrian Luther Smith's book - I agree, definitely. It's also incredibly thorough, listing a lot of really obscure titles - Far (far) more than the Italian book.

Especially when you consider when the book was written and information had to be accumulated via other means than the internet. The problem is that he wasn't selective with the titles (and I can't really blame him) and just threw everything into the pot.

Maybe of interest...  :D

Mikel Koven has this to say in his book La Dolce Morte on the giallo filone (free translation:movement):

"There are several different kinds of gialli....While the classical giallo features a serial killer clad in black gloves, hat, and overcoat being hunted by an amateur detective, the poliziotto puts the police investigation front and center in the investigation.
Other gialli tend to focus on more private and interior settings, creating more of a suspense giallo.
Still others, embracing the strong connection between the giallo and the horror film, offer a more supernatural narative, the giallo-fantastico.
What we mean by giallo, then is quite a broad spectrum of films, despite their formulaic narratives."

So I made this division:

Classical giallo (Blood and Black Lace,The Bird with the Chrystal Plumage,Who Saw Her Die?...)
Poliziotto giallo (Black Belly of the Tarantula,Death Occurred last Night,So Sweet,So Dead...)
Suspense giallo (The Sweet Body of Deborah,Orgasmo,Perversion Story...)
Giallo-fantastico (Suspiria,Inferno,Malocchio...)

I'll buy the first three sub-sections as being Gialli but not the 'Giallo-fantastico'.

Same here, also I'm not sure about Koven's authority as regards gialli in general. I don't have the book to hand but didn't he say he's only seen a handful of them?

Post by: Kevin Coed on 19 Mar 2011 - 17:19
A bit more than a handful, but he does state in the introduction that he hasn't seen STRIP NUDE FOR YOUR KILLER (for one) because he kept getting outbid on EBay. Hmmmm........
Title: Re: Giallo Filmography - Suggestions and Feedback
Post by: Johan Melle on 19 Mar 2011 - 21:58
Interesting discussion. A division between classical giallo and poliziotto giallo is a good idea I think will be quite a challenge to agree on which sub-category put the various movies into. Personally, I'd put BLACK BELLY OF THE TARANTULA in the classical giallo category instead of poliziotto giallo. Yeah, I know the main character is a cop but I think it pretty much plays by the classic pattern and is quite different from other crime/giallo flicks like WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOUR DAUGHTERS? and WHO KILLED THE PROSECUTOR AND WHY?

I wouldn't label SUSPIRIA or INFERNO as gialli at all but I do think that supernaturally-themed stuff can fit on the list. For example, I consider both EVIL EYE/MALOCCHIO and SEX OF THE WITCH to be gialli.

But you still have other films that are hard to place. For example, where should one put DEATH ON THE FOURPOSTER, which plays out like a youth/party flick for its first half before turning into a giallo mystery? Or what about comedic stuff like ATROCIOUS TALES OF LOVE AND REVENGE? And should non-Italian stuff like BLUE EYES OF THE BROKEN DOLL be included on the list or not? There are many questions to consider...
Title: Re: Giallo Filmography - Suggestions and Feedback
Post by: bdc on 20 Mar 2011 - 08:35
DEATH ON THE FOURPOSTER could maybe be classified as a suspense giallo?
Title: Re: Giallo Filmography - Suggestions and Feedback
Post by: Jonny on 20 Mar 2011 - 08:38
Just to make something clear, we won't be breaking the main list down into 'categories' as such. A film will either be in the main list or, if it's a 'grey area' title, it will go in the 'undecided/debatable' list at the bottom.

Didn't really like the Koven book as I felt it was kinda weak, obvious and I do have an issue when someone claims not to like or have seen to many giallo and then writes a book on the history and traits giving a kinda of expert insight. There should have been more depth in there. It's well worth the read, but I'd reach out for the Luther book first.

Although I do agree that the first three of the four categories, which do make sense, and stick a greyareagialli section at the end.

The Luther book with Koven's divisions. That's the ticket.

Thought the Koven book was a reasonable stab at discussing this rather ambiguous (to say the least) 'genre' - straddled the line between academia and readability. Couple of glaring omissions and inconsistencies, but fair enough, some decent points were raised.
The whole breaking down of the categories discussed on this thread will run and run - everyone seems to have their opinion as to what constitutes a giallo or not. I do believe in the giallo-fantastico - tho' there are few films that fit the bill. I generally prefer the term 'gothic' giallo, as the films in question take their cue from the unreliable / mentally unstable narrator and psychological horror found in 18th century novels (tho' - to term these as gialli means that the supernatural elements are ultimately red-herrings / covers - interestingly 'Colors' does both prosaically rationalise the supernatural elements AND does include them).
And I fucking hate the term 'suspense' giallo - what on earth does that say? I would term these as 'chamber' gialli - as they usually concern a limited number of protagonists and involve plenty of sexy shenanigans!

I've been looking for this one for years... I haven't found any trace of the film except for its initial theatrical run in 1962. It's impossible to say for sure, but it doesn't look like it's had any kind of television broadcast in Italy - certainly not in the last decade (or two).

On the plus side, the Cineteca Nazionale (national film archive) in Italy will probably have a 35mm print in the vaults so it's probably not lost.

Does anyone have an estimation about how many gialli were made?
