Title: Collecting Different Versions Of The Same Film
Post by: Paul on 06 Jul 2007 - 11:01
Anyone else collect different releases of the same film, for no other reason because they like a certain director or actor?

I'm usually quite sensible when it comes to buying DVDs - if a release is superceded by a better version, I will sell the original release and replace it. For whatever reason, I've hung on to almost every Argento DVD release I have ever owned, with the exception of BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE (VCI), SUSPIRIA (Nouveau Pictures), PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (A-Pix), TRAUMA (Tartan)m TWO EVIL EYES (French release), STENDHAL SYNDROME (Quantum Leap and Troma). so here are those that I have kept:

BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE - Italian release on Medusa Film. US release BLUE UNDERGOUND

CAT O'NINE TAILS - Italian release on Medusa film. US release on Anchor Bay

FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET - Bootleg

DOOR INTO DARKNESS - German release, Dragon

FIVE DAYS OF MILAN - Italian release

DEEP RED - US release on Anchor Bay

SUSPIRIA - Anchor Bay, US

INFERO - Anchor Bay, US

TENEBRAE - Ancor Bay US, Anchor Bay UK, Durch release (as SHADOWS), German release (as UNSANE) on Raptor

PHENOMENA - Anchor Bay US, German release on Dragon

Opera - Anchor Bay US, UK release on Arrow Films (as TERROR AT THE OPERA

TWO EVIL EYES - Blue Underground, US

TRAUMA - French release, Anchor Bay US release

STENDHAL SYNDROME - Italian release on Medusa Film

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA - French release

NONHOSONNO - Italian release on Medusa Film

CARD PLAYER - Japanese release, Anchor Bay US release

DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK? - French release, Anchor Bay US release

JENIFER - Anchor Bay US release

PELTS - Anchor Bay US release

I tend to sell-on any duplicates, but for some reason, have kept almost every Argento disc I have ever owned!

I bought the French release before the US version came out and it has burned-in subs...

Stephen - I've got two versions of ALMOST HUMAN - US and Italian (on a double bill with VIOLENT PROFESSIONALS). Is your third copy the French one?

Yeah it's the French one on Neo Publishing,Italian and French options only though which is a shame as there's a Ray Lovelock interview included.
Neo Publishing include some great exclusive extras on their titles but always Italian language with French subs,be cool if some someone liscensed them and subbed them in English.

We could always learn to speak Italian - that would be the best way to enjoy all the Italian-only DVDs that have been issued over there.

This is beginning to be a minor problem for my shelf space in the next too distant future, but I'm tending to rebuy- and keep - varying releases of movies i hold close to my heart. I only get rid of releases which are 100 % identical.

Let's see...from the top of my head:

Antropophagus: 4 differnet DVD releases, with the Austrian NSM steelbox (including a German language audio commentary) and the Italian 2 discer as the clear faves.

Tenebrae: Raptor (as "Unsane"), as part of the "Box of the Banned 2" and also included in the Scandinavian 9 disc Argento Collection. ;) Each of these releases has its charms. The Scandinavian one for instance appears to be fully uncut also in the bits which went missing in the ABUK/US releases, since a French master was used.

The Evil Dead: 3 differnet releases: ABUK's first release with the extras, included in the "Box of the banned 1" and for the sake of the German dub also from Astro. ;D

"Last House on the Left": ABUK2 discer, in the Box of the Banned 1, as part of ABUK's "Wes Craven Collection" and finally also fully uncut on the Scandinavian DVD (including also the MGM extras ;)).

Maniac: AbUK, Astro, AWE uncut 2-discer.

Then there are also doubledips of "I spit on your Grave", "Cannibal Holoccaust" "NYR", "The Beyond", "The Smuggler" and numerous "Halloween" rebuys resting on my shelves...and why not? I like the choice between differnet DVD presentations and very rarely does a release of a beloved genre film come along, which captures it all...or so it seems. :-* :-\

Better we don't start throwing Laserdiscs and VHS tapes into the mix.... ;D ;D :D :)

I have six versions of MANHUNTER:

The original UK Momentum release
Anchor Bay 2-disc limited edtion (contains a television cut of the film)
Anchor Bay Divimax Director's Cut
Japanese MGM Theatrical version (a must own for fans of the film, available from CDJapan for around £7)
French MGM Theatrical version

I also have four posters for the film.  The original US one-sheet poster is one of favourites of all time.

Is this uncut & widescreen? If yes, I would be really interested in it.

I am also into collecting different releases of films that I really like. Mario Siciliano's ROLF/THE LAST MERCENARY- I have 4 different Greek VHS releases of it plus a UK VHS. Now after the Italian one. Or any others. Also used to collect anything related to Lenzi's EATEN ALIVE but I have only kept the legendary Greek tape and the Shriek Show disc and the posters. Got rid of the rest.

I have two versions of THE EXTERMINATOR, the OOP Anchor Bay US DVD and the Danish DVD.  Both are fully uncut and utilise the same master.  The Danish DVD can be picked up online for quite a reasonable price.

If I had the money I would love to finance a release of Glickenhaus' full edit of the film containing an extra 20 minutes.  I really love this film.

Yep, widescreen and uncut. Send me a message.

What about that extra 20 minutes? Please fill me in...I'm a nut for this movie (and it's sequel).

That is about as much as I know Captain.  Glickenhaus has often commented in interviews that there is between 20 and 30 minutes edited out of the film and that the Anchor Bay release was actually his intended directors cut.  As to what this footage is I have no idea but the prospect of a two-hour EXTERMINATOR is very cool but I guess it will never see the light of day.  It is one of my favourite films of all time without a doubt.

It's weird, I did found a dvd of THE SOLDIER here in Belgium that has some extras. When exterminator was much better known, and still is we never see something extra about this one.

Stephen, no, that came out long after my obsession had stopped  :-\ Used to have a beautiful-looking letterboxed tape of the movie on the Italian Lamberto Forni label though. Shouldn't have got rid of it.
