Title: My Collection
Post by: Paul on 09 Oct 2012 - 11:29
Shameless plug! I’m running a series of interviews with collectors over on my Blog – the first one went live today. Not sure it’s something everyone will dig but if you’re someone who gets a little nostalgic about the days of collecting VHS/LaserDisc and the like, please check it out. I’ll post the links to new interview here as they go up.

I'm not going wild about anything, just giving the Colin interview a thumbs up  :D

I would give the second interview a thumbs down purely for the fact how Cunt Labs is highlighted with a link it the first sentence  ;D

And I forgot to say... 'haircut! haircut!'

I got fed up with visiting the barbers and bought some clippers. Lucy now cuts my hair. Number three every three weeks.

And while I'm here....

We've discussed Paul's use of the English language before in depth. He won't be told. Best just to let it ride.

Finally caught up with these this evening - Great stuff Paul, it's all a bit of a blast from the past reading about these collections, sadly I had to sell just about all my DVD's before moving to Italy... I really didn't want to take a chance at French and Swiss customs with 2000 DVD's in the car. The fact that they probably wouldn't have fitted in the car didn't help either.

A lot of the stories are familiar, cinema store, psychotronic, film fairs, laserdiscs, Samhain, Deep Red...

It's weird knowing those days of tape trading, that boom in the early 90's, couldn't really happen again, not with the internet and downloading. It's certainly a lot more accessible now, which is great, but back then you needed a weekly bus pass and good networking skills!

Looking forward to the next one  :P

Cheers, mate. I feel a lot of nostalgia for the 1990s too. Like you say, it's an era that's come to an end now that everything is so readily available.

Post by: demented_uk on 17 Oct 2012 - 12:32
Really enjoying these, Paul. I agree about the 90s, I used to be so excited to go to a film fair not knowing what I would find and come back home with. Sometimes you'd come with nothing and other times you'd have bags full. Now you can find anything you pretty much want at the click of a button. I suppose the thrill of the hunt still exists for those hard to find gialli and poliziotteschi.
Title: Re: My Collection
Post by: pedrofokia86 on 17 Oct 2012 - 13:35
i agree with the posts above... the very best of these interviews is the nostalgia you get when you are reading them. the pleasure of going to the local rental store and picking up the "cool" movies... those were glory days. unfortunately nowadays those little pleasures seem impossible to get... except when you receive a brand new cult movies order from your mail man :).
Title: Re: My Collection
Post by: Paul on 17 Oct 2012 - 14:30
Yeah, the thrill of the hunt is all gone, for sure.

As film collectors we're lucky to have been into DVD and Blu-ray since their introduction, so there are very few examples of titles that have passed us by unlike there were with VHS.

Because the lion's share of cult films were only released to the rental market on VHS it meant that there was never a time when they were readily available to buy if you wanted to pop down the high street to pick them, either. It certainly was more specialist and prone to being something of a lucky dip if you went hunting for old video shops or popped along to a film fair! Still, happy days.  :-X
