Title: Eurocrime! Opinions on self published DVD or Blu-ray wanted! Have your say here!
Post by: Jonny on 17 Jan 2013 - 17:28
For those of you not on Facebook here's a chance to have your say about the possibility of a self published DVD or Blu-ray of the documentary...

Okay, so 2012 saw a great festival run for EUROCRIME!, playing in seven different countries so far. And we went into 2013 riding on December's momentum of a great VARIETY review (after winning Best Doc at a fest in San Francisco and winning their weekly paper's Top Festival Pick).

http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117948933/ (http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117948933/)

We have a number of distribution offers, but none of them so far involve a serious advance (only the promise of royalties to trickle in later), and in this industry, you're told never to count on seeing a single penny on a royalty deal. And since we have several small investors, we haven't jumped at a royalty deal yet, out of fairness to them.

I know that DVD/Blu sales are lousy all around, and I know that most distributors (even genre ones!) still aren't that familiar with the Eurocrime genre.

But I also know that I get a weekly -- if not daily -- inquiry from a Eurocrime fan asking when/where the doc is available. And I'd like to think that you guys have made a nice bit of noise about this project (although please continue making more, until all the distribs know the serious demand for this doc). So I'm not sure where the disconnect is...

In any case, we're *thinking* about putting EUROCRIME! out on disc ourselves ... again, out of fairness to our investors (and because we seem to believe that Eurocrime fandom really does exist out there, and will put more care into the release).

Of the U.S.-based fans out there, would you be more likely to buy a DVD or a Blu-Ray (or are there equal numbers of both)? Let us hear from you!

US based or Europe based please let us know your thoughts! There's a poll above so we can quickly track the feedback but please leave your thoughts and ideas here in the thread too!

you realise the doc is about eurocrime, right?
i'm in europe, i'd like to buy it.
guessing lots of european fans of a doc called eurocrime, a doc about european crime films.
either blu or dvd will do.
thanks.

Yeah, I want one too! I'm UK based though. Blu or DVD.

And congratulations by the way! An impressive achievement for all involved.

[Edit] By the way, I accidentally clicked blu ray on the poll. I meant to click don't care as long as it's released.

Man, I'd find a Beta-Max or Laser Disc player if it meant watching Eurocrime! in the comfort on my own home!  :-\

I'm in for either a Blu-Ray or a DVD (although I would surely prefer a Blu-Ray, and wouldn't mind paying a bit extra), and even though I pledged on the documentary's Kickstarter campaign at a level that included a DVD, I really wouldn't mind picking up an extra copy to help making this release a success.

Which reminds me, apparently my Kickstarter pledge included a thank you credit. So guys, am I in, did I have my 15 minutes of fame already by having my name showing up on a film festival?  ;D

Hi! Long time no see/hear!!
I've had a similar type of question with AudioBooks that I've recorded: reaction from a top UK publisher "Things are changing so quickly... Books?  DVDs? BluRay? Who knows where it's going? Why not do EVERYTHING electronically?" Which is what we've started to do. Everything downloaded from a safe server with built-in pricing and repeat downloading blocked. Food for thought?

Well, it's not in the grab I have, but there were about three screens of 'Thank you' credits. Mike seemed to capture anyone with an interest in the film.

I will buy this in whichever format you release it in.  If it's cost prohibitive to do blu-rays, then go with DVD.  On the other hand, if going blu means more outtakes and/or bonus features then that would be preferable.

I'd buy a blu ray or DVD in a second.  In some ways I'd prefer DVD simply because it's a more flexible format (to play in my laptop, etc.).

If you offered an exclusive release I'd pay a good deal more than a typical DVD, it's a great thing to support the filmmakers themselves.  Hope you do it!

Absolutely I want to see this movie, and would be more than happy to pay a fair price for a DVD. I do understand that because of its specialist nature, it's going to be more expensive than your average DVD, but if the trailer alone is anything to go by, then it will still be fantastic value for money. The more of us who get the chance to see it, the greater the opportunity for us to spread the word to all kinds of forums and social networking sites.

DVD. Though I would seriously consider purchasing a Blueray-player if this would be on Blueray only.

Out of curiosity, how much does the production cost differ from a DVD and a Blueray today? Thinking mostly of the actual cost of pressing etc.

Not too bothered about which format but I'll definitely support it if it is released.

If there are enough special features to warrant a Blu Ray disc then I'd be up for that, otherwise DVD will do.

Perhaps you could make the first run a numbered limited edition (or with limited packaging) and depending on whether they sell through, then do a second un-numbered re-press?

Given the nature of how some of the interviews were shot I'd have thought DVD would be the better option, right?

My advice, if you're going for one format only, would be DVD as it would obviously reach a bigger market.

Good luck, Mike!

All I have is dvd right now, so that is what I’ll vote for, but if it only comes out on blu-ray, I’ll go out and spend the money on a blu-ray player.

It looks that good!

I wonder for a documentary like that, if a BD is really needed, cause the movie fragments are not HD anyway.

So a DVD would be fine.

Agreed - DVD. Many of the clips were from VHS so no point in HD.

And DVD is much easier and far cheaper to author and replicate.

If it's a choice between dvd and blu-ray, then I think it makes more sense to out it out on dvd, as more people use that format than blu-ray.

A DVD sounds great. Have you considered setting it up on Vimeo.com and using their new system where you can have people pay real money to rent to view the documentary? I'd also be a fan of that. Either or though. I became really excited after seeing the trailer for your doc.

Hey, all:

Thanks to all for your continued interest / support. Can't say it enough times. One thing that has always pained me was the perceived image that I abandoned LLaL, when in fact, I just had to quit all film boards in order to ensure that I'm *working* on movies instead of discussing movies. Oh, to have the luxury to do both.

EUROCRIME is still on track for its Oct 14 release, from what I hear, although I had to reject the first checkdisc I received for really compressed-looking authoring. The subdistributor apparently just cranked out the first authoring attempt, not minding quality. Now everyone's a little miffed at me that a second pass has to be done. Oh well. The sense that I get is that I should be feeling lucky to be getting a DVD release at all, in this age of dying physical media.

Crazy timing: A year ago, my fiancee and I booked our wedding location for early October, 2014, and when I signed the EUROCRIME contract with Cinema Epoch, I realized that the release was almost within a week of the wedding.

Fortunately, that prince among men, Jonny Redman, is helping out with making sure the European kickstarter donors get their discs in a timely fashion. Would be running way late otherwise.

But you guys don't care about the bullshit that is me signing the DVDs, I'm hoping? (The Kickstarter mentioned Malloy-signed DVDs.) It just makes sense for the distrib to ship straight to Jonny, given the circumstances. Otherwise, the discs are going to be waay late coming to you. When I get bread-ahead in life, maybe I can sign some postcards for the official DJANGO LIVES project I co-wrote and mail them out to you guys (they may end up collectible if, God forbid, the film doesn't get produced). Or maybe you can convince Associate Producer Jonny Redman to sign your copy. In any case, I'm not trying to duck out of something, but I really don't even know why I offered the signature in the first place; it's just me, not somebody of note.

I've been receiving all your kickstarter messages and updating the address list. And I'll be sharing it with Jonny.
