There's a bit of a discussion taking place over at Rock!Shock!Pop! regarding Larraz's (excellent) SYMPTOMS, which has apparently been screened recently (on the 13th of March) via a 35mm print at the Offscreen Festival in Brussels! (See here: http://www.offscreen.be/offscreen2013/jose-ramon-larraz/symptoms (http://www.offscreen.be/offscreen2013/jose-ramon-larraz/symptoms) .) This is quite exciting, if true, as SYMPTOMS is on the BFI's list of 75 'Most Wanted' films (ie, films thought to be in some way 'lost' - in the case of SYMPTOMS no 35mm prints were believed to exist). The BFI have been contacted and, although a DVD or BD release may be a long way off, it'd be a dream come true if in 2015 or thereabouts there was a release of SYMPTOMS on the Flipside label or summat :D
I know it's a slim chance, but was anyone here in Brussels for the Offscreen Festival? They showed Larraz's SCREAM AND DIE too.
-
That's great news! Hope it all comes good and ends up on their Flipside roster.
-
Definitely. I'm really excited about this. Just wish I could have been in Brussels to see it for myself.
Anne Billson, who was at the festival, has said on Twitter that it looked to be screened via a 'bad'/worn 35mm print under the film's alternate title THE BLOOD VIRGIN.

It would be great,i just love this movie.
Pure Larraz (in a positive way off course),with a wonderful and creppy Angela Pleaseance, suspense, and MADNESS MADNESS and MADNESS !
This movie is truly an experience,he deserved to be shown to more people !

I still have a copy recorded in the 80s from London ITV.

SÃNTOMAS / Symptoms (Jose Ramon Larraz) 1974 - Trailer subtitulado - (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YYor3w0veQ#)

This is freely available on CG - remastered and filtered by user embersreich No hard-coded subs (like Jose's print above) and it won't cost you a tenner (if you ask Marc Morris above for a copy)
Best to make that clear before someone gets shafted sending either of them a private message.

Yes, this version is by far the best to date and I've been through about 4 different copies of the film. Not my favourite Larraz but definitely up there.

Thanks for that. :)

Amazing news!
-
Mondo Macabro also announced it for release in the U.S
-
I was talking to someone from the BFI Friday night about this, great news.
-
Mondo's LE will have the uncut interview shot for the old Eurotika special as an extra.
Most of it's 2 hrs has not been seen by the gen pop.
Special will not be on the regular BD or the BFI release ( so I guess it's LE for me again, although this time it's worth the cash, unlike LIZARD ).
Meanwhile Pete Tombs is expected to shed some light on why this is listed at 1.33 on Amazon & the BFI site. ??? We should know soon via company rep Jared over at Bluray.com forum..
-
I've plumped for the BFI release, it's only £12 which is a steal. Would be nice to have the bonus Larraz interview but I can live without it.
-
I am uneasy about Pete Tombs revealing that 1.33 is the correct theatrical ratio.\The old TV screening was open matte and looks OK zoomed in to me. Of course I can zoom in....but this just seems odd. I asked for any supportive info available, we'll see what is offered.

Can't say the answer of the OCN being 1.33:1 is particularly compelling. Surely there has to be more to it than that. I understand wanting to trust the BFI but organisations like that have been wrong plenty of times before.

Latest reply
The camera negative was 1.33:1. Perhaps it was intended for matting, I don't know.
What I do know is that Pete and the people at the BFI have been doing this professionally for many, many years. Personally, I trust their decision to present the film "full frame", and know that it wasn't arrived at without good reason.
I have a bad feeling about this but I get the feeling asking for more info would lead to some testiness.
-
I know the bloke who runs video publishing at BFI - he's one of the biggest advocates of film that I've met - loves EVERYTHING, is incredibly knowledgeable and is very thorough - it's in good hands.
Besides, whatever is issued is going to be leaps and bounds above the off-air recording that's doing the rounds, so there really is no need for any "bad feelings" in advance of the release.
-
It's nothing to do with bad feeling bad feelings, it's unease that 1.33 is not the intended aspect ratio.
Any film from an established international director in the mid 70's shot full screen is very unusual to say the least.
-
Shot full screen would be perfectly normal. Projected full screen would, with some exceptions, be odd.
-
Thanks for articulating my fuzzy thought there. ;D
Check discs are back in Pete's hands, so this is going to be 1.33 on the BD. ( despite my deep reservations )

It was you who said the above, hence my response to you! :-* :-\
