Title: Wild beasts / Belve feroci (Franco E Prosperi, 1983)
Post by: Jonny on 16 Aug 2007 - 21:15
(http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f22/lovelockandload/WildBeasts.jpg)

An un named European city has it's water supply contaminated with PCP and the local Zoo animals go nuts and manage to escape. Rampaging across the city they eat everyone who gets in their way, Tigers, Lions, Polar Bears and even Elephants are loose on a deadly stampede of bloodlust!

Saw this for the first time tonight. Not sure which Prosperi it is that directed it, though judging by some of the animal cruelty I'm thinking it's the one who had a hand in 'Mondo Cane' and not the one who Directed 'La Settima Donna'.

Pretty dull film overall and shot almost entirely at night which does start to grate after a while, interesting for the use of real animals but let down by the shots of lions attacking cows and hyenas trying rip the ears off pigs holed up in small pens, not stock footage but real animal attacks staged especially for the film. No need for that kind of stuff in my book.

This one has quite a reputation although I have never seen it. I am pretty sure I heard somewhere that it would get a DVD release but don't remember more. Sounds hilarious!

Never see this but have been meaning to though i trust your judgement Jonny and think i'll give it a wide berth now,the thought of watching more real life animal slaughter is enough as well.

It's not that bad a film really and is quite hilarious when you think about it, especially the rat attack on a couple who are making out in their car. Just a shame we have to see the rats being burnt alive for real later on, including live rats on fire running around. If they'd kept that shit off screen it'd be a real schlocky winner of a film. The Polar bear attack is like something out of 'Grizzly' with a big fake paw taking chunks out of a schoolteacher.

The ending is quite fun though...

SPOILERS!

A class full of kids hiding out from the animals with their teacher are found at the end to have also drunk the PCP laced water and have murdered the teacher and gone mental too!

There's some of that in 'Cannibal Apocalypse' as well.

I think there were real rats getting shot and drowned in a trashy US film titled FOOD FOR THE GODS (that even spawned a sequel).

There's Lorraine De Selle in WILD BEASTS right? That's another reason for anybody to give it a watch.

Yes, she plays a 'Professor' who thinks the idea of PCP "Sounds wild!" in a way that makes out that she wouldn't mind a dabble herself!  :-\

De Selle is great, I like her in everything I have seen her: CANNIBAL FEROX, THE NEW GODFATHERS, Mattei's WOMEN'S CAMP 119 and BLADE VIOLENT, HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK, MADNESS that Stephen mentioned... She is an Italian exploitation goddess! She was indeed hot but with an "elegant" touch- she didn't have that "cheap slut" look that many of today's actresses have.

The rat attack might have been funny if they hadn't just bitten to death a cat that looked like it was tied to the floor to stop it running away.

I'd love to see this film receive a DVD release. It's been years since I saw it. I seem to recall that there's some underage female nudity which would probably be problematic these days.

I have an old Dutch VHS of this, which I haven't watched in ages but I have to say I was somewhat underwhelmed by it all. It fails to work up much suspense or fun for most of the time. The ending with the kids really is quite cool, though, and there's an alsatian dog who goes for his owners throat (apparantly, this was obligatory for most Italian horror films made after SUSPIRIA). There's something very tasteless about the nude shots of Lorraine De Selle's pre-teen daughter as her nudity is filmed in a very sexualized way but I guess this isn't too surprising as Lara Wendel had paved the way for such scenes some years earlier. As for Lorraine De Selle, she is dubbed with the same voice she had in both FEROX and HOUSE but the similarities end there, as she is far more plain-looking this time around and pretty under-used too. I was more happy to see Ugo Bologna from ZOMBIE and NIGHTMARE CITY, who is pretty fun here in a more sizeable role than usual for him as the police inspector. I ought to re-watch this some day and see how it holds up. I might find it more agreeable this time around.

Got that old dutch tape too, watched about half of it recently, found it to be an extremely boring film. One of those films where the video sleeve looks much better then the actual movie.
The rat scenes sure are  over the top. Will watch the rest later to see that ending and see a bit more of Lorraine De Selle.

Yes, the artwork on the video sleeve is pretty good. There were some amusing trailers at the end too, including one for the rare drug movie THE TUNNEL with Helmut Berger and Corinne Clery - featuring music by The Pretenders. Cool stuff.

To be fair, I do think WILD BEASTS picks up considerably for its fun climax, so it redeems itself somewhat.

Never saw THE TUNNEL but bought the dutch tape to get me a little more of that fine fox Corinne Clery who took me by surprise in Hitch-Hike.

I recommend THE TUNNEL. It's a pretty good period piece. OK, calling it a period piece sounds pretty crazy but I think it captures the era in which it was made pretty good - showing the bleak, tough existance of heroin addicts just before the outbreak of AIDS. Berger and Clery are both good, and it's quite funny to see a very young Karl Zinny from DEMONS and DELIRIUM. Love the Pretenders score too.

I've always wanted to see this, isn't there supposed to be a scene of Clery injecting into her vagina?
The same director,Massimo Pirri, also made the excellent ITALIA ULTIMO ATTO? with Luc Merenda about urban terrorism.

Clery does inject into her vagina, yes, but it's a close-up shot so it may be a body-double. I'm not sure. The film is good but bleak and straight-forward. Apparently, Pirri was married to Paola Montenero from A BAY OF BLOOD and Bruno Mattei's nunsploitation films. Montenero is said to have had a drug problem, so I guess she may have served as some sort of inspiration for THE TUNNEL...

I'm not overly familiar with Pirri but I have seen KISS OF THE COBRA, which is a strange hybrid of Indiana Jones-style adventure and a prison film with Andy J. Forest, Danilo Mattei and Milly D'Abbraccio (before she started appearing in hardcore porn). Not exactly great but an OK time-waster. Pirri's L'IMMORALITÀ (1978) is out on DVD in Italy with English subs. I've been meaning to pick it up but haven't gotten around to it yet.

There's a pretty good 7 page interview with Pirri in Nocturno#7 from 1998 where he talks about Montenero and her role in his 1975 film CÁLAMO,there's also a picture of the 2 of them on the set.

That sounds cool! I don't suppose it says anything about where Montenero ended up? I've seen her in DOLCE GOLA, a really ugly porno film where she performs in several hardcore scenes, but she seems to have vanished afterwards. And Pirri seems to have died quite young...

No it just says something about her ending up in trouble with the law in Italy,Paola Senatore also gets a mention as she also starred in the same film.
He mostly talks about his films like ITALIA ULTIMO ATTO? and the social climate around the time it was made etc, sadly he died 3 or 4 years after that interview was published.

YES, indeed.  I'm a big fan of hers for sure.  She's pretty boring in this film though - underused.

Wild Beasts is a pretty fun movie.  I watched a Dutch (?) video of it recently that had english audio/burned in subs.  The entire movie is filmed at night which adds a major layer of cheapness to it, but there are some amazing scenes, especially the Cheetah vs. car sequence (I think there's a clip of it on youtube).  A lot of the humor comes from the English dubbing which sounds hilariously bad.  The soundtrack is great as well - the recurring drum machine music when an animal is about to attack.
I'm hoping it will surface on legit DVD someday so I can re-appraise it.

It is strange how she looks vastly different in different roles.  I remember thinking she looked rather plain in CANNIBAL FEROX and HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK but incredibly hot as the warden in that Mattei/Gemser prison movie.

I thought the same thing about those two but thought she looked nice in VACANZE PER UN MASSACRO

I haven't seen either of the two Bruno Mattei prison films she is in, which one are you referring to anyway?

i heard they were awful but if it gets a "Masterpiece" in the eyes of Lefteris i will endeavour to watch them ::)

I think Lorraine looks very sexy in HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK, her guest role in RETURN OF THE SAINT, VACANZE PER UN MASSACRO and when she lets her hair down in VIOLENCE IN A WOMEN'S PRISON. She does look very mousy in CANNIBAL FEROX, though, and WILD BEASTS isn't really Lorraine at her finest, either. I agree with ecc that it's really odd how she managed to look this different in so many films. To be fair, though, the role in WILD BEASTS wasn't intended for her. Originally, Tisa Farrow was to play the role but she dropped out at the last possible moment - causing the production to be delayed while they searched for a new lead actress.

I've just come back from another trip visiting my girlfriend in the Czech Republic and I had a nice little find that I thought I'd share with you.
There is a horror publication called 'Filmag' out there and it seems that each issue it gives away one or two free DVD's.
I picked up the July issue from a newspaper kiosk for 76 kc (about £2.50) which came with 2 free dvd's.

One of them was 'WILD BEASTS/BELVE FEROCI' and the other was an English dubbed 'BLACK CAT' (Lucio Fulci). Haven't properly checked the specs for 'Wild Beasts' but I was pretty impressed with it for a freebie!.

Apparently next months issue will have Fulci's 'Murderrock Dancing Death' - I should be out there again in August so if I get a chance I'll grab a copy and see what else comes with it.

Also if anyone happens to be visiting Prague this summer it's well worth hunting down this mag  (and dropping me a PM for a beer!) - unless you understand Czech it's not the best read but you can't go too wrong with £2 for two decent enough flicks.  ::)

I love this film -- I've been pushing for someone to pick it up here in the States for years now (the rights are readily available) but no one has jumped on it because of the price.  I can't wait to see it done right!

While interviewing Franco Prosperi about another film, David Gregory got him to speak at length about WILD BEASTS.  You may want to talk to him about possibly using the interview, since I don't think they're doing much with it.  If you need me to put you in contact, let me know.

I'm going to hold out for the Camera Obscura release.  This and LA ORCA are my most anticipated upcoming DVD releases.

Our brand-new WILD BEASTS master finally made it from Japan to Germany. And the only thing that radiates is the image quality...

He had an anecdote for every single beast of the movie.
The one about the tiger is the most incredible one...

Yes he is!
We spent a nice day together, it's always a pleasure being with him for several reasons.
He's a friend and one of the nicest guy around, he can tell the most incredible stories about his life and his journeys, he lives in a wonderful natural park, he always asks us to have lunch with him and he offers the best mozzarelle of the world...
Long life to Franco!

I gave into temptation and bought the AWE release off of eBay on Tuesday, it arrived Thursday. It certainly isn't the best AWE release in terms of audio/visual the English and Italian audio is slightly muffeled and very pop and hissy. The film has always had a reputation for been very dark and in some scenes it's difficult to make out what's happening. The print used looks like it may have been culled from various sources - film, video etc. Given the reputation of Prosperi and animal cruelty I was expecting balls to the wall outright animal carnage, which isn't really there. The most notable nasty scenes are a lioness attacking a cow and a hyiena attacking a poor pig, both of which are unpleasant to watch but the action quickly cuts to a scene in the lab. I can't help but think the remainder of the carnage scene was cut because of the jump cut that occurs.

Not the worst exploitation film ever made, but certainly not the best. The elephant stomping on a womens head is possibly the best thing about the entire film oh and the very eighties saxophone score. Sounds like a softcore porn film!

Just placed a pre-order for this at dtm. 23.99€, which seemed decent enough. Looking forward to rewatching it, it's been a while since I last saw it. And since Camera Obscura has finished their work in this, hopefully it won't be too long before we get a release date for Al Tropico Del Cancro as well.

Around £30 delivered seems to be the standard price for these Camera Obscura releases.  I ordered mine from OMG Entertainment; they only have two left in stock though.

I think diabolikdvd might be the cheapest option (but not by much).

Out of stock at the moment though.

Yeah i usually get my camera obscura releases from diabolik, they are slightly cheaper which doesnt make sense in that it has been shipped out to america and then back to the uk,xploited were the cheapest for german hard box's also, which would imply the european sellers are making too much profit :(
