Title: Bloody Friday / Blutiger Freitag (Rolf Olsen, 1972)
Post by: Fray G on 29 Aug 2007 - 18:15
What do you guys think of this? Starring Raimund Harmstorf as a massive ginger David Hess-like maniac snarling his way through a bank job armed with machine guns and grenades. Very bloody and mean, I laughed my arse off during some of the amazing dialogue, my favourites lines are "SHUT UP CUNT!" and "YEAH CUNT!"

A+ for sheer entertainment.

Check out the Italian version [Violenza contro violenza] - it has hardcore stuff in there. I have this one on the New Pentax label.

It's only had a decent DVD release in Germany. I have the fan sub but haven't watched it yet due to my inability to be able to watch anything in German, not my favourite language to listen too. I'd love to see it in a dubbed version though...

No offense Magnus but listening to the German language spoken is way different to listening to Italian or French. It just sounds so harsh as opposed to the Latin based languages that sound so smooth and pleasant on the ear.

I totally agree with you that the German language sounds a bit harsh. It is totally in context with that movie though and I feel that an English dub would have done more harm than good to it. I'm a big fan of the Edgar Wallace krimis so what do I know?  ::)

Don't worry, guys! I didn't take it like that anyway. ;D

It's just since I'm a somewhat professional writer (well, at least radio plays :-\) I've delivered a deep love for the written and spoken German word. ;)

@Jonny: Try out some of the Dietrich/Franco collaborations in German. May be the likes of "Loveletters of a Portugese Nun" or "Blue Rita" might swing your impression slightly more to the positive. :-X The naughty Father Vincent in "Loveletters.." having the German voice of Clint Eastwood might be intriguing...or not. ::)

Cheers and have a great weekend,

Back on topic...

I was watching this the other day and there was one bit that made me laugh. Heinz goes to a bar with Luigi and his girlfriend and she says to him something along the lines of "Should you be out in public?" as she's concerned he might get recognised and arrested. He replies that he'll be fine as no one knows him in that town... I laughed because he's about 6 and half feet tall with a big bushy beard, tight leather trousers and big bug eyed shades. He sticks out like a sore thumb!  ::)

Reminds me of a homicidal Bee Gee!  :-\

That's awful. It's ashame when you find out about these crime stalwarts comming suicide. I was shocked to hear about Luigi Pistili and Frank Wolff - the latter in particular, as it was so brutal.

Well, depends on what you call famous I guess.
People interested in the German dubbing industry and the voices behind the stars certainly recognize him.

Klaus Kindler dubbed Clint in most of his films from the early "Dollar" days on, but he died after "Space Cowboys". Having grown up with Kindler's voice as Clint's I find it hard to watch more recent efforts with the German audio track, particularly since I really liked his voice. :-[

thank you for the offer, I have all this already my friend.
I have pretty much all corners covered,
An Italian Wide version (bad visual quality)
German fullscreen
French Fullscreen
English Fullscreen
English Fullscreen with Spanish Subs (best English audio)
Turkish Betamx (possible master, top quality)

A friend of mine is providing some high qua lobby card scans for a picture gallery.
As far as extras go, im including two alternate text openings, gallery, extensive film notes and was thinking of adding bonus trailers for cool Eurocrime flicks.

Im looking for an Original Trailer atm if anybody can help with that.

Thank you

Great film that deserves the DVD treatment.

I did a fan sub of the German DVD.  That said the sub timings weren't the best (had nothing to work with and subtitle workshop is a pain to get the timings right) and it was taken from the English dub track since I can't speak German.

You did a good job amigo. This film was a real revelation for me, incredibly violent and very well acted. Martin`s timing on this was terrific as I had just read reviews of it in Blazing Magnums and Is It Uncut? and was really curious to see it.

The greek cover would be wicked mate, all contributions will be credited on the disc. It's good to hear postitive feedback on this project. Currently for the gallery, we have some stills on the way, Turkish cover, mercury cover, French S.O.S Police version cover (though this is pretty worn cover so if anyone has a better scan we would welcome it.) We have Italian, American and German poster also.
I know their are quite few VHS covers out their we still need, does any body know if this was ever released in Japan on video?

Were planning on having Both English dubbed and German sound options. Possibly including Italian, not to sure about including French and Turkish lang though. The subtitle translation will be from the German Language track.

Hi Fraser,
I'd be happy to do you a scan of the Greek cover mate. I also have the US release under the title of 'Violent Offender'. The cover is rubbish and the tape is badly censored but I guess it's worth adding to the still gallery?.

Regarding the Turkish audio. The Turks always tailor their dubs towards their language, using terms and slang usually only applicable to Turkey. I understand the language perfectly, so if you ever needed any sort of translation for this print, just give me a shout mate.

Just an update on the dvd

The betamax copy cam through and the pic quality was only OK, the german dvd still has the best image so we will be using that as the master.

So the  language options are as follows - default language, English, Additional language tracks, German, Italian.
The subtitles have been completed and these are translated from the german audio track.

As far as the extras go.
Two alternative opening scenes. And two alternate closing credits.
Photogallery with rare VHS covers.
Version comparisions.
A few rare euro-crime movie trailers.

to be added, Italian hardcore inserts as bonus material.
German vhs cover and a french cover.

Whatsmore for the packaging we are looking into having the discs held in Red Big box VHS cases. But more on that when it comes.

No problem Stephen. I've dug my copy out and it runs for 92 mins 34 seconds. It lookslike it's probably the same transfer used for the Mercury UK pre cert? I'm usually all for seeing films in their original language but the English dub is a real gem for this one.

Anyway, here are those subliminal shots - I'd be interested to know which other prints these appear in. There are several more images (mostly of the slaughterhouse) but these were the clearest:

I am digging out this thread to discuss a little more about Rolf Olsen's other EXCELLENT crime flicks (maybe I should open a new thread for it, but they are euro-crime after all, not sure about this?):

Call girls of Frankfurt (1966)
The devil's girls (1967)
When Night Falls on the Reeperbahn (1967)
The Doctor of St. Pauli (1968)
Hotel by the Hour (1970)
The Priest of St. Pauli (1970)

Yes, all of them are German crime-movies but believe me, they're sure to please euro-cult enthusiasts with sleaze, action, funky soundtracks, charismatic actors and very well written dialogues! Of course, I know various domestic releases but I was always curious how their international reception was/ is...if there are dubbed versions around? Apparently there are as the original titles have English translations (according to imdb). Would love to have some international tape issues! :'(

Any fans around here?

Thought I'd dig this one up as my other (wiser) half is helping me compile an uncut Italian language version for a friend.

There are almost 20 cuts in the Italian version (from the Swiss VHS) and an alternate scene - even more annoying is the fact that there are two or three scenes in a different order to the uncut German dvd.

Does anyone have a subtitle file handy? Sometime in the not-too-distant future I plan on subbing it from the Italian audio track. A sub file with the timing done would save a lot of hassle - also I need subs for the German scenes as I don't speak German!

Hello there,

I'm new around here.

Has anyone seen the Synergy Entertainment Archive version of this film and would be able to talk about the picture quality etc?

There's a copy on Ebay at present for £19.99

It looks like a DVD-R, and I've seen it listed as having an English dub and/or English subtitles?

Cheers,

Bronson

Synergy are a bootleg outfit so it's highly likely it's a copy of  one of the fan made versions, it's even possible it could be a copy of the old UK VHS...

Looks like there might have been even more in there originally judging by the abrupt edit. Which version did you go for Mark? I enjoyed the film on YouTube but I'm guessing at 86 minutes 49 seconds it was cut. For instance, I believe there's a scene outside the bank where members of the public are interviewed and that wasn't present. I also think it was missing a bit of gore.

Love to get my hands on an Uncut English sub or dub of this.

Cheers,

Bronson

This is a good film but if it had had a couple more action scenes it would've been a classic, but the low budget really shows in places. The machine gun fire sound fx doesn't have that brutal rat a tat tat sound the italian films have and the resoloution is rushed somewhat but it's very bloody and brutal if a little unrealistic. I mean the cop that throws himself on the hand grenade would've been blown to bits and not just have a bloody mess all over his chest..lol. Don't know what the lead actors name is but to me he looked like Al Clivers long lost brother!

My copy is widescreen but looks to be taken from a VHS source ( albeit a good one) and English dub. The guy dubbing the Cliver clone is terrible but the rest of the dubbing is fair.

My copy seems to be uncut and has the interview scene with the public. Worth checking out if you've not seen it.

I'll definitely be contributing but if it's not too late for another reward can I make a suggestion? People are looking forward to the Don't Go In The House release so maybe a reward that just had that and Blutiger Freitag without the credit might be a popular cheaper option?

How much is shipping to the UK? It's probably staring me right in the face, but I can't seem to see it mentioned. Or is worldwide shipping included in the perk total (very cheap if that's the case!)? I notice it mentions ships anywhere in the world. Never seen the film, but always eager to support something like this.

Shipping costs will be added as soon as you choose your pledge.

Worldwide shipping starts at $7 and goes up to $10 for the $100 premium pledge.
Be aware that the 3-title pledge includes existing or upcoming combo packs with booklets and O-Card sleeves. Those are pretty heavy and require a higher shipping fee.
But I can guarentee that we don't earn a single dime on shipping fees. We choosed the lowest rate that is worldwide possible for all the pledges.

Also the planned Bloody Friday comes in an exclusive packaging that weights a bit more than a regular DVD case and forces us to add a little higher shipping fee.

Thanks! I was just curious to get an idea of what the total would be before pledging. I've spent a fair bit this month (thanks to Camera Obscura and Criterion), and was wondering whether I could fit it in this month. It sounds very much like I can ::) Very reasonable indeed.

I've read somewhere that once a project hits 30%, it has a 90% success rate. I'm not sure if it's true or not, but if it is, it's god news for Subkultur since they're 26% funded at the moment.

Similar to the rant that's in my head, Arrow fanboy cunts would soon pledge if it was an Arrow release but as it's not on that label (or Shameless or 88) they couldn't care less about it, but if it was (even though it's something they've never heard of) they'd be rejoicing that Arrow would be putting it out and showing an interest, you know it, Russell.

Two of his old buddies from 1972 heard about the project and gonna share their delightful memories with you. Some others still need a little lovely words to get convinced.

Still 69% to go and then, Heinz Klett will thank you personal with an outstanding release!

Thanks everyone for your support! We've raised 40% of our goal in just one week, but we still have a lot to go...

Some of you have asked about modifying a few of our more exciting cult titles as stand alone pledges, and we have listened. Starting today, we are offering single pledge options for both SWITCHBLADE SISTERS and DON'T GO IN THE HOUSE on Blu-ray!

Check out the Project Page for more info on these limited editions, available only here!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2132684476/restore-bloody-friday (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2132684476/restore-bloody-friday)

IF WE REACH 500 PLEDGES BY THE END OF OUR CAMPAIGN, EVERY KICKSTARTER BACKER WHO PLEDGES $20 OR MORE WILL GET A SPECIAL BONUS DVD SURPRISE FOR FREE!

Lastly,

We are excited to announce that BLOODY FRIDAY cinematographer Franz X. Lederle has caught wind of our mission to restore the film and will be involved in the restoration and participate in an on-camera interview to discuss his work on the film!

@ Jonny

Thank you for putting a banner on the front page  ::)

@ R-T-C Tim

Unfortunately not. We choosed the lowest shipping fee that's possible and this is for combined shipping. Maybe we can find a different solution, but I can't promise seperate shipping at this moment.

I can only promise, that we're gonna start immediately with the production of Bloody Friday, if the campaign ends successfully. The estimated delivery date is scheduled for December 2015, but this is more like a safety option, because we don't know exactly what will happen during the restoration process. The material is tricky and we'll work as fast as possible to let nobody wait any longer than necessary.

Was going to add some more to get Don't Go In The House (and maybe Switchblade Sisters), but it would appear you can't select more than one reward tier. Or perhaps I'm just doing it wrong? I seem to recall selecting a couple of tiers for something else, but perhaps it was IndieGoGo. The bundle tiers with those included all seem to have the $20 for an on-screen credit reward included, which I'm not really interested in. Oh well, they've made what they needed now anyway I suppose.

As far as I understood it Subkultur will produce their special kickstarter editions with all the bells and whistles first. I am not sure if they made an official statement yet, but they hinted at a streamlined general release with considerably less bonus coming out at a later date.

I remember seeing a very well-made TV documentary on the true crime case that somewhat inspired the film. I wonder if that could be part of the extras and if they'd carry it over to the general release.

BLOODY FRIDAY will be a general release for sure. But all those who supported this restoration on Kickstarter and make it an unbelievable reality will get a little extra treatment as a thankyou for make it happen.

@ KommissarX

Don't worry, the actual events in 1971 will be part of the release. It was a tragic but important historical moment for Germany because it was the very first bank robbery with hostake taking and one of the reasons (together with the later terror attack during the Olympics in Munich) for founding the SEK (the German SWAT unit).
So, BLOODY FRIDAY ain't just another exploitation film, it has a very interesting background and we will also take care about this event in the extras of our release.

I wonder if this is still on schedule to get released in December?

Unfortunately not. December was an estimated date and way before we discovered more material that still needs to be digitized. We have now four audiotracks to restore, the Italian version needs a little work and a lot of extras are scheduled for the next weeks.

Bloody Friday will come asap but we honestly can't tell a possible street date.
All we can promise is that the upcoming release is way much stronger than originally planned. The wait is hard, we absolutely know that, and we also know that especially our Kickstarter backers are not so pleased about any further delay, but we want to create the best possible product and this goal needs some additional time.
