Title: Watch Me When I Kill / Il gatto dagli occhi di giada (Antonio Bido, 1977)
Post by: fdsmedia on 25 Sep 2007 - 05:05
Re-released by VCI: "New digital transfer from the 35mm negative" - not sure if it's an improvement from their previous disc, though.. .you tell me! Here are some screens, there is a noticeble amount of grain and the colours seem a bit washed out. Nice enough, though. Can someone provide some screens from the X-rated Kult DVD?

The old Redemption VHS tape looks better if you ask me.

To be honest, that doesn't look any better, if memory serves me right - I certainly wouldn't upgrade to this version, unless it runs longer, based on those grabs.

The original VCI disc was one of the worst looking releases I have ever seen, I could not make it through the whole film.  Despite being non-anamorphic, the X Rated disc is an improvement.

I was going to purchase this disc and sell my X Rated release but after seeing these grabs I am not so sure.

Never really liked this film, used to own a Scandanavian pre-record as THE CATS VICTIMS but only watched it once.

I am not too keen on it either Stephen but it has some good moments.

There is an Italian disc available but it does not have any English options.  Anyone own this disc?

Was'nt the old Redemption video release of this a lot longer than the VCI dvd (first pressing)? I seem to remember that the opening scene of a woman being strangled in slow motion was missing.

Please tell me more - exactly when is this strangling and how long is the scene? I read reports about VCI having sent the wrong CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS master to the pressing plant, so it wouldn't surprise me if they have done the same with this one... this new release is supposed to be uncut.

The strangling is either before or during the opening credits and is from the killers point of view with the womans head being shook from side to side. When I saw it I thought it looked like it had been shot on video! I think this footage is related to the different title and credits of The Cat's Victims as opposed to Watch Me When I Kill. There was also a significant difference in running times for the two versions that was not down to the different speeds of pal and Ntsc but I haven't seen either version in years. I don't like the film myself but find it preferable to his over-rated piece of crap The Bloodstained Shadow.

I received the Italian disc, and while not perfect it's definitely an improvement compared to the VCI release. I have started working on a fandub, using the English audio track from the US disc. Stay tuned.

I have an old US tape of this and I liked it when I watched it like 9 years ago. I remember the film having shades of DEEP RED. I never bothered with any of its DVD releases though... Would like to see Magnus' fandub. I am pretty sure the Italian DVD looks a lot better than the US ones.

Kevin, that is a killer poster  ::)

The German DVD is better than the original VCI release, which was unwatchable during the night scenes, but still has its flaws.

Looking forward to your fan dub Magnus.

It would have been far easier to use the old Redemption PAL VHS release since they both run at 25fps.

Is the Italian disc anamorphic?  Its unfortunate that this film seems to look rough in all of its releases.  SOLAMENTE NERO looks quite nice on the Anchor Bay disc (I think that was the only dual-layer transfer of the four gialli they put out in that set).

WATCH ME WHEN I KILL certainly has shades of DEEP RED as mentioned above.  There's similar stalk and kill sequences, cubist-esque editing, and the score is more Goblin-esque than the score they worked on with Cipriani for SOLAMENTE NERO.  Soundtrack CDs of both are essential purchases (this film is already out on CD and Digitmovies just re-released SOLAMENTE NERO).

I seem to remember it's anamorphic, and it's a dual layer disc with the main feature approximately 6.5 GB.

I agree on both soundtracks, received Digitmovies' Solamente Nero the other day and it's very nice.

Sounds like the opening to SOLAMENTE NERO.

This one is so obviously trying it's best to rip off other (more successful) gialli, and in some ways it's a fun movie to watch. There's a scene where the music obviously tries oh so hard to copy Goblin, particularly during the murder scenes - in fact the build up to some of these sequences is quite (intentionally) reminiscent of Suspiria. Like Bido's The Bloodstained Shadow I think it's well worth a watch.

This was issued on video in Italy on the PAC label in a version running 88m 12s, and got a UK video release in 1995 courtesy of Redemption (in the days I was working for them) with a running time of  91m 36s. There's a US release issued by VCI under its American release title "Watch Me When I Kill" and a German version on the X-Rated label.

Does anybody know of any any versions with anything extra?

The German disc appears to have some extras. Well not real ones like interviews or commentary tracks, just a trailer and alternative opening credits.

Is this disc the best to buy?

The US title sequence is a nice extra.  It has a cool distributor logo, the US title, totally made up American-sounding names for the two stars, and the director credit with what I'm guessing is library music accompaniment.

Magnus (FDS Media) did a fan dub of the Italian DVD last year.  Again, the video quality is not perfect but it is better than what is currently available.

How would you go about ordering a Shameless title if you wanted one? We get quite a few queries form people abroad not knowing how they can get hold of Shameless discs.

Getting back on topic the elements for this film are horrible and we debated not going ahead but after some work we're confident it should be the best DVD yet by a good stretch - it'll never be a demo disc though!

I have that problem. Can I buy them directly from your site? I shop at play.com but PHANTOM OF DEATH (which is the one I need most) always seems to be out of stock.

Review of the Shameless disc from AV Maniacs:
http://www.avmaniacs.com/review.php?id=670

They mention noticeable compression artifacting during dark scenes(possibly due to this being a test disc?), will this be remedied on the final release (maybe pressed on a DVD9 disc)?  I would love to upgrade my VCI dvd, but I'll wait until others fill me in on this detail...

Nice to finally see the Italian version of this one without the abbreviated opening and closing scenes of the US version.  I really like the very un-Goblin-like end title theme (track 20 on the CD soundtrack).

I really like this film and even more so its fantastic soundtrack ever since I've seen the Redemption tape. I remember Trans Europa Express was one of the earliest things I immediately researched when I got internet access at home back in the 90s. Couldn't find anything though - Kraftwerk, I damn you!

@ecc: If you like the softer side of that soundtrack piece you mentioned you should seek out the album Adriano Monteduro e Reale Accademia di Musica. It is similar in tone (albeit with vocals) and Adriano was actually part of Trans Europa Express.

Does the Cat's Victims title sequence unfold over the tango scene or a different background?
