I just received a DVDr of this film. The film is brilliant the quality however was the worst I have seen yet.
It ran 84 min, was pan & scan, had Greek subtitles, and it was a direct transfer from a tape.
A direct transfer can be okay, the Greek subtitles do not bother me either, but the transfer was so poor that the film was hardly watch able.
-
Yeah, the Greek tapes are not known for their quality transfers. The Portuguese and Danish VHS releases look much better. Vigilante has a fan subtitled copy of the Italian DVD release which I should have in a week or so. Drop me a PM Dorado, I might be able to help you out with an upgrade.
-
Every print i've seen of this looks a bit ropey including the new Italian dvd,not the worst transfer but CGHV/Federal were obviously working with a very damaged master. They also released a dodgy looking disc of Alfonso Brescia's THE NEW GODFATHERS which is jumpy and splicy, still it's nice to see these 2 out there even if the offical releases are Italian language only.Bring on the fandubs/subs.......
-
The Greek VHS of VIOLENT ROME doesn't look as bad as Dorado says, it is watchable. There are other Greek prints that are unwatchable, specially some that were released in the early 80s that were sourced from wretched 35mm prints...
I would love to see a really good remastered print of VIOLENT ROME one day. Noshame had their chance but they released the crappy VIOLENT TURIN instead ???

Yeah, I have to agree with you there Stephen I was really disappointed when I first watched the Federal DVD. I'd say it's only a marginal step up from an original VHS quality wise.

ROMA VIOLENTA 1975- aka VIOLENT ROME
Maurizio Merli, Richard Conte, Ray Lovelock, John Steiner
I understand very little Italian so this synopsis is from what I could make out as this DVD had no english track nor subtitles.
Commissioner Betti (Merli) transfers to Rome to help quell the abundant crime and violence in the city. His methods prove to be as destructive as the criminals themselves. He is relieved of duty and is ultimately hired out by a rich business man (Conte) to lead a private group of vigilantes to eliminate as much scum as possible.
Maurizio Merli's first euro crime actioner is one mean mother and an outstanding start that would produce close to a dozen more violent Italo crime pictures. Merli commands your attention in every scene he is in and only needs to give an intimidating scowl to let you know somebody is about to get hurt. Merli, the king of the bitch slap gets to dole out mucho punishment here and director Marino Girolami (father to Enzo Castellari) gives him ample opportunity to do so.
The fight scenes are very good for a change and aren't as telegraphed as they are in so many Italian action films especially their westerns. Some of them are quite brutal such as the one where two men (including polizio regular Luciano Rossi) are caught after brutally raping Conte's daughter. Merli and his group viciously beat the two men with chains, baseball bats and crowbars. The beating Merli dishes out on a bus is also memorable.
The one scene that stands out most of all involves Merli chasing some crooks who have robbed a grocery store and murdered a woman and gunned down Betti's friend (Lovelock) in the process. Merli relentlessly chases the two men all over Rome. When they fail to lose him, they machine gun some women and children on the street in an attempt to get Betti to stop and see to the civilian casualties. Amazingly, Betti continues with the chase which ends up on the Freeway where the two villains attempt to lose Betti in the traffic. Needless to say, things end badly for the bad guys in what appears to be a modernized take on the famous gun duel seen in so many westerns.
Conte isn't in the film until 53 minutes in but his presence is welcome as he had become a regular face in these movies usually playing Mafia types similar to his portrayal in Coppola's GODFATHER.
Lovelock plays a character called 'The Blonde'(?) He takes a great deal of punishment throughout the movie for helping Betti nail the bad guys. The ending is a bit strange as Betti leaves Lovelock in the rest home and he foresees Betti gunned down in the street. As Betti turns the corner, we see a car approaching from behind him as the screen freezes before the credits roll.
An excellent Merli movie that desperately needs a US DVD release or at least a subtitled release from somewhere. There is an interview with Ray Lovelock here as well as a 7 minute doc on Italian crime movies by Daniele Magni and Silvio Giobbio who have apparently written a book on the subject bearing the title of Lenzi's THE CYNIC, THE RAT & THE FIST also starring Merli. The doc is specifically about Merli and shows shots from HIGH CRIME probably in lieu of the producers wanting a Nero look-alike for similar movies. Sadly, like the movie, none of these features have english subtitles.
There is a poster in the crime doc for a Merli movie entitled ITALIA A MANO ARMATA from 1976 with John Saxon that was made before Lenzi's ROMA A MANO ARMATA. Haven't heard of the former. Some other Merli movies which are listed on this DVD which I may know under a different name are POLIZIOTTO SENZA PAURA (1977), POLIZIOTTO SPRINT (1977 this may be the Merli movie where he is a motorbike racer), UN POLIZIOTTO SCOMODO (1978) SBIRRO, LA TUA LEGGE E LENTA...LA MIA NO! (1979) and POLIZIOTTO SOLITUDINE E RABBIA (1980). Any information on these others would be greatly appreciated.
-
I love this film - was a little disappointed the first time I saw it - probably because it took Tanzi and I the best part of two or three years to track it down. That said, I've seen it a good few times now and really like it. Steiner is a first-class cunt of a villain.
-
Its the film that launched Merli's career in Italian crime cinema and its definitely one of his finest moments, if not the finest! I was truly amazed at how violent it was the first time I watched it!

It'certainly Marino Girolami's response to his son's HIGH CRIME, right down to the casting of Merli, who was seen as a second-rate Nero at the time. It's funny how the Merli films were seen as a cash-in to the "serious crime films" that were made at the time, because int ehir own way, they're equally enjoyable.

One of these is the UK born actor John Steiner,he plays Franco Spadoni aka English with a very over the top dubbed cockney accent in the English language print.

Some quick info...
ITALIA A MANO ARMATA = Special Cop in Action (Top film!)
POLIZIOTTO SENZA PAURA = Fearless Fuzz (Co Starring Joan Collins!)
POLIZIOTTO SPRINT = Highway Racer (Merli without a 'tache!)
UN POLIZIOTTO SCOMODO = Convoy Busters (NoShame put out a great DVD in the US)
SBIRRO, LA TUA LEGGE E LENTA...LA MIA NO! = Hunted City (Never seen this one)

Haven't you got the dvd-r from the widescreen English language Japanese tape?
Good film which stars Mario Merola in the role he seemed to play in all his crime films from that period-the firm but fair mafiosa.Only thing that lets this down IMO is the dreadful dubbing job on Merli, just doesn't sound right at all.
-
Yeah, I realized later what SCOMODO was. I have the NoShame DVD and they couldn't have picked a more dull Merli movie to release here. The numerous features made up for it though.
-
POLIZIOTTO SPRINT (1977 this may be the Merli movie where he is a motorbike racer)
This is HIGHWAY RACER directed by Stelvio Massi,he plays a cop in this who likes racing in his police car.
Anyone know of a widescreen print of this, everyone seems to have the old Danish f/s tape .
Btw CONVOY BUSTERS dull?
-
Yes. After seeing VIOLENT NAPLES, CYNIC, THE RAT & THE FIST, ROME ARMED TO THE TEETH then FEAR IN THE CITY (my favorite of his so far) CONVOY BUSTERS is dull. A friend who had watched all of the above save for FEAR....thought it was dull. I found a review of it that wasn't all that thrilled about it either. There's hardly any action whatsoever and what there is (save for the finale) is very lazy. The best thing about this one is the cinematography and some interesting camera tricks which I'm sure were all ideas from Massi himself.
-
I've still not seen FEAR IN THE CITY but enjoyed CONVOY BUSTERS. I was always lead to believe that Merli's best work was done with Girolami and Lenzi (which it was, based on what I've seen), but was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
-
Hi all, first post here. What a cool forum. It's good to see people enjoying these great films. All my friends look at me funny when I try to tell them about the great Merli, Milian or Silva pic i've just watched. Nice to meet kindred spirits.
I find I can return to Violent Rome more regularly than the other Merli films, I love how he disapprovingly scolds Conte's character for advocating vigilantism and then minutes later warns him that his methods are much more severe than the vigilantes and basically takes over the running of the gang, dealing out severe lawless punishment. Priceless.
This film also holds a place in my heart on a more personal note. Twenty years ago while on holiday in Rome with my dad I got mugged and had my wallet taken by two girls aged around 15! In my defence I was only 9 or 10 years old at the time and was walking along by myself (a lame excuse). Anyway, this happened to me only about 10 metres away from the spot the brutal mugging of the old lady at the hands of the two fellas on the bike took place at, with the Coloseum in the background. Quite literally on the other side of the wall from that scene.
Ah memories......

Watched the fansub of this last night which looked great, nice easy to read subtitles as well.
Hopefully we'll see an English language SE disc of this someday,we're long overdue it.

did you notice what was cut?
-
did you notice what was cut?
No,but i did notice it jumped/skipped around abit in places. Not sure if it was print damage,a dodgy pressing or some problems when doing the subs. There was also something similar in the HIGH CRIME fandub around the chapter marks.
-
I think it was Marin that mentioned to me that the Italian DVD was cut, by a few seconds, I've not noticed anything and a mate of mine just borrowed it and didn't notice anything either. Though I must admit I've only seen the film a couple of times so I might have missed something.
-

Can't say i noticed anything either but the CGHV disc is a bit damaged with very crackly sound, don't think i've ever seen a decent looking copy of this.I had an English language tape from Denmark that looked washed out as well a dupe of the Portuguese tape which was the same,is the cut UK VPD tape any better?

Danish Release

I have this Danish VHS, thanks Jay ::) Thinking of getting rid of the ultra-rare Greek one after I got the Danish one.

i dubbed it with the English uncut Print and the DVD is missing some 40 Seconds of Footage.
one segment is in the Supermarket Robbery (25s) and the other Pieces is someone walking away from a car (15s)
absolutely not needed Footage, but it's on all other Prints on VHS i've seen (including German VHS)

The same label also released CRY OF THE PROSTITUTE which was a direct port of the Italian disc on Flamingo with a German dub added.I've got a feeling this is the CGHV transfer with the German and English dubs added.

that's not the whole Case. 2 Scenes missing on the italian DVD have been inserted from a Widescreen VHS Source, so it's actually the first complete Widescreen Version of the Movie on DVD.

Thanks Marin, very tempted to get this now.

I definately want to pick this one up. Does anyone know of an alternative place to order this from?
I have just been looking an eBay seller's store that has lots of different German bootlegs available in limited editions of 125 and even 84. Some of the packaging is really attractive too. Are bootlegs really this common in Germany and is this a reaction to the strict censorship laws there?
-
It goes on in the US and the UK too - not just Germany, although the Germans dress their bootlegs up in expensive looking packaging and make them more desirable by making them numbered limited editions :)
-
I like German discs, bootlegs or not. I will be picking this one up for sure. :) :-\
-
I also love this movie, one of the best.
Im not really sure what my version is. Italian w. Remastered English subs, Anamorphic, looks to be taken from cinema reels.
Only 85 minutes, rape scene, some extended dialog cut.
-
Spannick did a comprehensive, full edit of this film, including the minor edits that were missing from the Italian DVD... I should have a copy soon, demented uk has one at the moment...
-
Has anyone here picked up the German bootleg disc yet? If so, what's it like? I'm very tempted...

Yep, I have it and the picture quality is no different to the Italian DVD but it is nice to have a full uncut version. It is worth a purchase if you can get it cheap enough.

Jonny, I will be sending it out next week, the past week has been crazy.
-
it's also reframed and the encoding lines at the edges are cropped so that it looks less annoying when viewed on high resolution TVs & PC Monitors.
-
Cheers Demented UK. Where did you get your copy from and how much was it? Sorry to ask but just don't want to pay over the odds for it - I've found one for 16.99 Euros...

It was from eBay and I had a PayPal discount code to use so it only cost me just over £11,

Danilo Massi (Stelvio's son) says in an interview that Merli was so superstitious he actually wore the same pair of black shoes in several of his films that he wore originally in ROMA VIOLENTA! :-\

you can get every grey Market Release from Germany there easily. you just need a friend in Germany who can handle the stuff for you.

I got my copy off of eBay but DVD Uncut in Germany also stock it along with the majority of other German grey market releases. I have never used them though and have no idea if they are reliable or not.

No credit for Maurizio Merli on this UK quad though Ray Lovelock gets one, was he a recognised name in the UK back in the '70's?

Is that your poster Jonny?
No, not mine. A guy posted the picture over at AV Manacs. Never seen one before, infact I didn't realise that it'd even had a release in UK cinemas!
-
Perhaps his name sounded too "Italian" to be on the poster. They probably wanted to sell it as an American film? Its funny but Maurizio is also uncredited on the Greek VHS cover.
-
Watched the German DVD last night, excellent stuff!

You can talk about websites that sell bootlegs on here no problem at all! Go for it and if you want to give them money then that's cool. Have at it! It's your money at the end of the day.
Personally I wouldn't give them a penny.

theres no real alternative to buying bootlegs when it comes to some titles it seems.

I know this thread is a bit old, but I hope someone can help me out...
I've been doing a frame-by-frame compare of the danish DSA Scandinavia [DSAS] VHS-release and an italian version I found on YT... The one found on YT is ripped from italian television and is really pretty unwatcheable...
My question is; does anyone know it this version is identical to the italian Federal Video DVD-release?
Here's my comparison;
00:00:00
Danish video misses a couple of frames at the beginning of the film (DSAS release has cut out the FIDA Cinematografica presenta-intro)
00:26:22
The robbery at the supermarked is runs longer in the DSAS-version
(http://www.forum-uncut.dk/adm_pic/RomaViolenta/RV_1.JPG)
00:35:13
DSAS has a couple of frames extra of Merli and Steiner in the back of the car
(http://www.forum-uncut.dk/adm_pic/RomaViolenta/RV_2.JPG)
00:37:47
The sequence of the police monitoring Steiner runs longer in the DSAS
(http://www.forum-uncut.dk/adm_pic/RomaViolenta/RV_3.JPG)
00:45:25
The scene of Merli driving by the mother holding their shot children is a couple of frames longer in DSAS and the start of the scene in which Steiner turns his head looking for the pursuing Merli includes a couple of frames extra in the DSAS
(http://www.forum-uncut.dk/adm_pic/RomaViolenta/RV_4.JPG)
00:50:29
Semi close up of Lovelock has a couple of frames extra in the DSAS version
(http://www.forum-uncut.dk/adm_pic/RomaViolenta/RV_6.JPG)
00:52:23
A couple of extra frames of Merli stepping out of the car in the DSAS
(http://www.forum-uncut.dk/adm_pic/RomaViolenta/RV_8.JPG)
01:00:51
DSAS misses approx. 1 second of Conte's arrival after the beating of the carpet thieves
(http://www.forum-uncut.dk/adm_pic/RomaViolenta/RV_9_IT.JPG)
01:06:07
DSAS has a couple of extra frame of Merli after the beating
(http://www.forum-uncut.dk/adm_pic/RomaViolenta/RV_10.JPG)
01:13:26
Pudsighed; DSAS has a somewhat weird coupling of 2 scenes: for some reason something must have happened during the editing of the film... The scene in which the two thugs who attacked Conte & Rizzi is going to be beaten up, is shot in different angles... Result; one of the men is handing over a baseballbat twice. :-D
(http://www.forum-uncut.dk/adm_pic/RomaViolenta/RV_11_A.JPG)
01:13:59
Televison version totally ommits the arm breaking scene
(http://www.forum-uncut.dk/adm_pic/RomaViolenta/RV_12.JPG)
01:15:08
The scene of the car arriving at the restaurant before the robbery is a couple frames longer in the DSAS version
(http://www.forum-uncut.dk/adm_pic/RomaViolenta/RV_13.JPG)
01:24:07
... and finally; There's a couple of frames extra of Merli leaving the rehabilitation centeren after visiting Lovelock in the DSAS version

Anybody know where I could see a good copy of this besides Trash Palace? Cinema de Bizarre's website isn't working, at least for me. Maybe a link to one of those fan sub or fan dub sites?

What a shame that there is no Blu Ray release of one of the best Polizios ever made. There's not even a good DVD release with any English options. At this point it seems like a Blu Ray will never happen.

Never say never. :D
2022 has actually been a rather awesome year so far for poliziotteschi BD releases, especially in the UK (Revolver, Violent City, ...), and more labels than ever are releasing titles in the genre (Eureka, Arrow, 88 Films, Studio Canal, ...), so I'll keep hoping.
I wish some of these labels tackled unavailable titles, instead of heavily re-releasing a handful of well known titles over and over.
