Title: The Killer Reserved Nine Seats (Giuseppe Bennati, 1974)
Post by: bloodvamp on 25 Sep 2007 - 20:50
This is a giallo with some nice gothic atmosphere as a group of people are invited to a legendary deserted playhouse and start getting offed one at a time, aka 10 little Indians. there is some nice gore and welcome nudity with lesbianism tossed in. the plot has a supernatural ghostly element to it. It stars Howard Ross, aka Mickey Scalenda in New York Ripper. The eurobabes are hot in this one and i had fun with it. I wish this film would get a facelift from a major dvd company. Its watchable but no more than that. still worth checking out.

aka L'assassino ha riservato nove poltrone
This isn't a bad giallo which touches on the supernatural at times,i'll have to give it another watch sometime soon.

I like this one very much. Quite a good cast, great score, great atmosphere and some nasty murders. I consider it in obscure giallo classic. The story told in Michele Soavi's STAGEFRIGHT was pretty similar to this one wasn't it?

Its watchable but no more than that. still worth checking out.

Just watchable? Your standards must be very high bloodvamp  :-\

There's lots to like about this film imho! Pretty much every female in the cast takes their clothes off for starters! I didn't quite understand the supernatural  element to it though, I've only seen it the once so maybe I missed something? Really liked the killers freaky mask though and like Lefteris mentioned some nasty stuff going on, one poor girl gets stabbed in the crotch a few times then has her hand nailed to a wooden beam.

Would be nice to see a good wide screen version of this, the Greek tape teases us with wide screen opening credits and then goes full screen for the rest of the film  :)

I have this somewhere on my HD, have to watch it soon. The storyline seems to be quite similar to Pete Walker's Flesh & Blood Show.  ;D

Really liked the killers freaky mask
Something very creepy about that mask plus the scene of the bloke hiding amongst the mannequins which freaks Lucretia Love out, great stuff.

Sadly, no. The only English-speaking prints known are the Greek tapes which are fullscreen. I guess the Italian VHS looks better although I don't know if it is letterboxed or not.

Here's a description from some bootleggers site:
Quote
The Killer Reserved 9 Seats: Dir. L'Assassino ha riservato nove poltrone. Dir. Giuseppe Bennati. A personal favorite of mine. This is the Italian original tape and includes several scenes and extra dialogue that isn't present in the commonly available Greek tape also in very nice picture quality. and it's in Widescreen! fantastic!. Italian language Widescreen (1974).

Might be a bit of a problem with some of the scenes

Well, can't you simply make a composite with the uncut Italian tape and sub the cut dialog? Is it missing dialog or violence?
Title: Re: The Killer Reserved Nine Seats (Giuseppe Bennati, 1974)
Post by: vigilanteforce on 26 Sep 2007 - 19:44
Don't think the Greek prints are missing any violence.

The Greek prints are only missing dialogue, not violence.

I just found this on my hard drive, forgotten all about it until now...

I started making it a couple of years ago and never finished it! Just needs some text on the back. Looks nice printed out though.  :'(

Sweet mate
I'll try and get a decent PAL copy from Europe, not big on those American bootleggers and the PAL to NTSC transfers.

Nice one, it's gotta be PAL. Can't do anything with NTSC as it won't be compatible with the Greek PAL version.  :'(

After reading this thread I decided to watch this film this afternoon and I really enjoyed it too.  The theatre setting is certainly claustrophobic and the mask worn by the killer certainly gave me the creeps, in fact it could be the creepiest mask I have ever seen used in a horror/thriller.  Will definitely revisit this one soon and would be very interested in seeing a widescreen version even though I found the DVD-R of the Greek tape to be of surprisingly good quality.

Just thought i'd let you all know where I am at with.  The Italian VHS is certainly longer than the Greek VHS containing more footage; his is mostly extra dialogue scenes.  This has meant that dubbing is taking much longer than expected. I aim to get the dub finished over the Easter break and then it will need subtitling.

Simon, one of the forum members, was kind enough to produce a draft of the cover using the art that Johan sent.  I am hoping to do something similar to Jonny and Marc's excellent QUEENS OF EVIL fan DVD but will only produce 25 copies.

I must say I'd love a copy - have never seen the film as I couldn't stand the abysmal quality of the Greek copy, so if there are any going spare, perhaps we could make a trade...  :D

Here's the latest update.  The dub is finished and appears to be all in order.  This was by far the most difficult dub I have attempted yet, there were so many small differences between the Italian VHS and the Greek VHS. I have also used DjangoLi's subs for scenes missing English audio.  I am only missing several lines of dialogue.  Is there any chance that someone who speaks/understands Italian could watch the short scene below and translate it for me please?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfxAsc6Rz-A

Once this has been done all I need to do is build the DVD and get them burnt.  I am having a friend duplicate them for me and he can put them in metal tins for a reasonable price.  It would make a nice collectors item.  What do you think?

If anyone has any suggestions for extras please let me know.  I was thinking of doing a slideshow/gallery but could do with a few more scans of artwork as I only have the pressbook that Johan kindly sent.  Is there a trailer easily accessible?

Hi Demented...I've given the missing line of dialogue a bash but can't quite suss out one or two words. If it's any use, it's along the lines of:

"Anyway, Ressel doesn't like this stuff.

?Per lui è nobile solamente chi si riducio uno straccio con l'alcohol?
For him who is noble, is only reduced to tatters with alcohol.

He's an old fashioned man. We have to forgive him"

More than happy for Pollanet or Django Li to correct me  :D

Luca pretty much nailed it imo, I would only change a few bits (hope you don´t mind, mate):

Here´s my suggestion:

- Russell is not into this stuff anyway.
- For him, nobles are only those who get wasted with alcohol.
- He´s an old-fashioned man. We have to forgive him.

Polla and Django to the rescue!!! ;) ;D :P

Okay, just need to sub one more scene and I am finished filling in the missing subs.  Luca/Rogerio, can any of you help with this scene please?

In the English version the voiceover recites a scene from Hamlet but I do not think this is the same in the Italian version.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

I collected the cover art from the printers today, these will stick on to the front of the metal tins.  You can also see the inlay poster art I printed out and cut to size; they look really good.

The DVD shouldn't take too much longer. Marc is trying to get the video to look as good as possible, once this is done all i'll have to do is build the DVD and get the DVDs burnt.  I am not sure I will get it all done before I go on holiday at the end of next week but it should be finished by mid August.

I already thinking about doing another limited tin project that should please DrMiaow.

Here are some screenshots from what could be the final authored DVD.  All I have to do now is proof it and get it duplicated.  If all goes to plan I should get these ready in a couple of weeks time.

The main menu (there is moving video in the circle):

The picture quality isn't great, it is a bit jumpy in places but without getting the original Italian tape this is the best it will be.  DrMiaow proofed a copy a few months back and thought the quality wasn't too bad at all.  Think of it as an early German X-Rated DVD release and you should get an idea of the quality.

The slideshow looks pretty good and I have added an Easter Egg hidden feature to the DVD.  I wonder who will find it first?

I'll update you all when I get the DVDs back from the duplicator.

Actually the picture quality looks fine, especially considering it's source. For example Four Flies on Grey Velvet's German DVD looked a lot worse than this.
And the menus look great too, the look fits the "giallo" theme quite well.

Thanks Tanzi.  Not sure what could be next, I am thinking of EYE IN THE LABYRINTH if I can get a copy of the TV rip or screener that is floating around or possibly doing a better version of TROPIC OF CANCER as Sutekh has done some stunning artwork for it.

Thanks for posting the DVD Oli  ::)

I have three versions of 'Tropic Of Cancer' including the Italian language print if needed and if you do decide on doing it.

'Naked Girl Killed In Park' is also quite a worthy project in my opinion. The Italian print runs much longer than the common English dub too...

It is indeed letterboxed mate  :D

Runs for 1:27:32. From memory it definitely has an additional pre-credist sequence not found in the dubbed version.

Well I know all of the 25 so it would be a kick in the teeth if some were to trade it with the guy who runs it.  Coincidentally, he already has a version of the film on there that is a rip of the Italian VHS with Djangoli's subs.  This version is missing some lines of subs and is not 16x9 enhanced and does not have the snazzy packing either  ;D

I am glad they are arriving safely.

Somebody could always trade it with someone who then trades it to there. I would have suggested giving each disc unique IDs so it could be traced but in those circumstances then somebody innocent could take the flack.

It would be a sad state of affairs if someone did pass on a copy to ZDD.

Fan subbers and dubbers will likely give up all together or be much more selective with who they share the fruits of their labours with if people don't start being a bit more appreciative of the work involved and stop making copies freely available to people who are out to make a quick buck off other folks hard work.

Are you drunk?*

As I kind of implied earlier - it might not even be anybody with any relationship here - all it takes is for somebody to do a copy for somebody else. That gets passed on. Perhaps gets uploaded to a torrent site. He could get it from anywhere really. I'm guessing he's got his feelers out everywhere.

I may be mistaken, but Jonny's QUEENS OF EVIL never turned up for sale anywhere, did it? I'm keeping my fingers crossed the same will happen with Oli's THE KILLER RESERVED NINE SEATS. I do trust the people I trade with, but I won't be copying it for anyone. That way if it does turn up anywhere I'll know for sure that it wasn't because a friend of a friend accidentally let the cat out of the bag.

If you press 'up' twice from the top, or 'down' twice from the bottom, on the main menu and then press enter then you get a credits/thanks sequence.

Just watched Oli's disc this evening and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was actually a lot better than I remember it being (I'd previously only seen the Greek tape), I think seeing it in Italian added a lot to that.

On a sadder note, I read that Rosanna Schiaffino died only a few days ago, so I guess this disc is quite a fitting tribute.

#19 arrived today, and there's good and bad news:

-the good: it's been said before, but I'll say it again: the package/disc art/insert all look lovely, the printing on the disc and insert in particular look pretty impressive; all the attention to detail on this release and package, even going as far as sending the discs in a plastic sleeve as if it was a sealed retail release, it's certainly more than most publishers would do for a release, let alone a fan release. You really went all out on this one, Oli.  :P

-the bad: unfortunately, someone from the postal services must hate me, because my tin arrived unbelievably smashed (almost as if someone jumped on top of it) to a point where it barely resembles it's original shape and it doesn't even close, and worse of all the disc was loose and badly scratched. I just hope it plays OK, otherwise I will be devastated...  ???
I'm officially an unlucky bastard...  ;D

Sorry to hear that Funktion.  Some people have also reported scratched discs but no one has had a damaged tin yet as far as I know.  The tins may look good but they are quite fragile.
Title: Re: The Killer Reserved Nine Seats (Giuseppe Bennati, 1974)
Post by: Johan Melle on 27 Oct 2009 - 11:28
I got mine (#4) yesterday and I can only second what has already been said here. The tin is simply gorgeous and very professional-looking. The print, while overly bright in some scenes, is in pretty good condition and it's great to finally be able to see the film in widescreen and without those big, embedded Greek subtitles. Also really cool to have the choice of watching the film in English or in Italian with subs. While viewing the film in Italian I noticed that there were no subtitles for the dialogue where Patrick and Vivian are discussing why they got divorced (around 70 minutes into the film).  But that's really the only quibble I can think of. Everything else was great. It's really nice to see so much care and attention put into a fan-DVD. It certainly puts so-called serious DVD companies like MYA to absolute shame! So congratulations on some very fine work!

Someone's selling what they claim is one of Oli's tins on eBay...

[ebay]120541158867[/ebay]

The seller in question sells a lot of ZDD stuff and I believe is a member on here...

Oli, do you know who you had number 17 off you?

Unbelievable, not very gracious is it?  I have just looked at the buyers list and now know who it is.  It is someone from here who has not posted for a long time.

It will be interesting to see how much he makes from it.  Well spotted Jonny.

The prices they've been getting for some stuff is quite depressing.

I could make a fortune if I didn't have any morals.

It's just a pity that he didn't value it, I had so many people contact me who genuinely wanted a copy and now wish that someone else had it.

I am currently writing a reflection on the whole experience of producing the DVD for my thesis and this news will at least give me a few pages of content.  ;D

I'll PM it to you, don't want to advertise it here.

There's also an American site that sell off their fan productions of Euro-Cult DVDs for quite a tidy sum.  I'd never sell any of my productions, it completely goes against the idea of doing all of this.

These pikey fuckers really do make me sick. OK, none of us actually own the rights to these films but if someone has taken the time to fan sub a film or make a composite using hard to find sources, then someone then selling it for a fiver and passing it off as their own work really is a kick in the teeth for those involved. All this does is annoy the people who bust their arses making fan subs for the actual genre fans and puts them off of doing any more in the future. These cowboys aren't offering anything unique anyway. What they're selling is available from most decent trade lists and torrent sites for free, so quite frankly anyone giving them their pathetic little five pounds for one of their gypsy arse DVD-R's is just throwing their cash down the drain.

Joe has really shot himself in the foot. Like someone else said, if he really didn't want it (and as Oli says that is pretty ungrateful) he should have offered it up on here for the price he paid for it. That would be fair, acceptable behaviour. I would guess he's written-off any chances he may of had of getting his hands on future projects from this community. A very short-sighted move.

Of course, DVD-Rs aren't supposed to be sold on Ebay so there's always a possibility that someone could report the listing and stop it's sale on there.  :-*

Yes :-[ I was not thinking when I listed the film. Must have had a blackout or something. I agree with all the comments made against me, I was a cunt, a fuck and all the other adjectives so used. The last thing on my mind was to upset the community, so, to punish myself I shall be watching Riccardo Ghione's THE BLOODSTAINED LAWN 5 times in one night. If anyone has seen the film, it is a severe punishment, believe me...

I actually found this forum when I was searching for more info concerning this film. I was fascinated while reading through this thread and wish I could have gotten my hands on that fan made DVD. I finally saw it using drastic measures recently, and though I believe it's far from one of the genre's best, it was an interesting obscurity to experience. Even if some of the subtitles were missing. :|

I can't see why not. It would be the same source so the timings would have to be adjusted slightly.  I have an S-VHS player for capturing VHS content now so it would be of slightly better video quality.

Do you have any idea when this will be released? Also, have you considered selling direct to your customers? The few outlets that stock your titles are a little on the expensive side and I think you could probably make more money (and sell cheaper) directly?

Starting with L'ASSASSINO HA RISERVATO NOVE POLTRONE, we're venturing into the Blu-ray-business. Many of you asked us in the past how this would impact the packaging, and we think we've found the ideal solution: not at all. Every title will be available as a single DVD as well as a single Blu-ray -- in the same Digipak-packaging as usual. The only difference will be that a Blu-ray logo instead of a DVD logo will be printed on the cover and the spine.

Great news! I confess I've been side-lining most DVD releases, unless it's a title I really want, giving preference to the BD format, for the much higher fidelity and film-like quality. Now that you are on the BD wagon, you can count me in for all your future BD titles.  :P

I used to order from http://shop.dtm.at (http://shop.dtm.at), but they've recently increased their p&p to €15, so ordering from Diabolik turned out cheaper.

I want to watch/purchase this, but there appears to be no Region 1 release. Any getting around this?

Edit: okay, so I realized this was a pretty silly question. Obviously I need some sort of region free blu ray/DVD player, something I've been meaning to get for a long time anyway.

How reliable are Kult Video with their despatches and delivery? Buying direct from them their the cheapest Euro option, altough they want £38 for Nine Seats on Amazon how they've come to that figure is a mystery. It's currently a toss up between Diabolik or Kult Video for me.

Well this looks amazing, possibly the best presentation of a Euro-Cult film on the Blu-Ray format that I have seen. I wonder who did the scan of this or were Camera Obscura provided with a HD master from the licensor? The encoder also did a great job too. Outstanding work, pick this up if you haven't already.

Also there was no subs for the italian audio sadly but it didnt bother me too much.
