Title: The Cynic, The Rat And The Fist (Umberto Lenzi, 1977)
Post by: IL COMMISSARIO on 06 Jul 2007 - 21:14
aka Il cinico, l'infame, il violento

Leonardo Tanzi (Maurizio Merli) has a hit put on him by The Chinaman (Tomas Milian) recently released from prison. The hit isn't successful but Tanzi goes along with it faking his death and goes into hiding which lasts for maybe five minutes when he learns Chinaman is working with another mob boss Frank DiMaggio (John Saxon). Tanzi sets about avenging some relatives, busting some of their criminal activities and ruining some of their operations in secret eventually setting the two against each other culminating in a final confrontation between the combatants.

Merli again turns in another tough as nails performance and actually smiles a bit in this one displaying even more charisma. He gets a love interest this time out in the form of Gabriella Lapori.

John Saxon is surprisingly vicious as the NY mob Boss Dimaggio who in one scene does in a suspected informer using golf balls and two big hungry dogs. Saxon, as in the above VIOLENT NAPLES, dubs his own voice. He is equally at home playing nasty villains as he is portraying heroic roles (lots of cops) in his American films.

Milian is again, very, very nasty as the Chinaman although not quite as sleazy as his role in the above film ALMOST HUMAN. He is quite the patient smart-ass and evokes laughter in one scene (of many) where he gives a failed operative the choice of having his left leg or right leg broken in the calmest of voices.

Another fine action crime thriller from Lenzi this one however, has a smattering of humor (some of it black) amidst the many scenes of carnage and is recommended also.

This was the first crime thriller i saw with Maurizio Merli and i was instantly sold on the guy, very charismatic, funny and convincing in fight scenes and shoot-outs.I'm looking forward to revisiting this great movie after i've got through my current unwatched batch so i can say more about. But with Milian and John Saxon, who can ask for more? ;)

I watched this again a couple of days ago via Alfa's disc. I had mixed feelings about it but now I love it- it is no VIOLENT NAPLES or ROMA A MANO ARMATA but still a classic. Maurizio is in top form here and so is Lenzi. As for the music score, its just perfect although it sounds identical to the ones for ROMA A MANO, NAPOLI VIOLENTA and ITALIA A MANO ARMATA/SPECIAL COP IN ACTION. I thought Milian was a bit annoying here (one of the reasons was his chain smoking) but not as much as he is in other movies- there's no doubt he is a great actor though. You just can't go wrong with this movie.

I watched this again last night – the first time in ten years, or more. It’s a great film and I’d forgotten how great it is. There’s plenty of Merli’s trademark slapping and punching and the dub seems a little meaner, with a lot of swearing.

One of the stand out scenes for me though was the one in which Merli dragged and innocent woman out of her car, gives her a shove and takes off in it. Genius.

Yeah that was hilarious, he pushes her into the fence as shes getting out and says "sorry about this"

I think I prefer this one to ROME, ARMED TO THE TEETH. It's more jokey and the final confrontation is handled better (the Hunchback "getting it" in the back at the end of ROME is kind of a cop out).
The only thing wrong with this entry is the fifteen minute segment where it becomes a heist picture.
That scene came totally out of left field.

That scene is integral to the plot of the movie. Without that there could be no movie or at least not the classic it is today. Tanzi was setting DiMaggio and the Chinaman up to rub each other out. This is one of the best movies Lenzi ever did, IMO. Granted, there's a couple of spots that are kind of silly (the lasers looking an awful lot like string and the cops not seeing the bad guys as they drop down from the rope escaping the building) but these don't taint one of the finest examples this genre has to offer. Take a view of some of Lenzi's more (in)famous movies such as CANNIBAL FEROX or NIGHTMARE CITY then look at this one again. Those are great pieces of Italian sleaze but movies like THE CYNIC, THE RAT & THE FIST are on a totally different level.

They took the heist scene pretty much scene for scene out of the film GRAND SLAM, only executed better in this film imo.

And they had more money for that one, too, I'm sure.

I really enjoy THE CYNIC, THE RAT & THE FIST but I'm with Hunchback on the heist bit.  It seems to belong to another film.  Still for me it ain't enough to detract from Merli, Milian, and Saxon battling it out.  All of them have some classic lines in the English dub and the Micalizzi score is top drawer stuff too.  A Must see Italian crime film in my book.

this was one of the first crimers i watched and still one of my faves. i read somewhere that Merli and Milian couldn't stand each other. dunno if that's true, but if you watch closely, although Tanzi is after the Chinaman the whole film, the two never appear in the same scene-let alone the same shot

"It's called 'Ballad of the Shithead'"
"Here, I brought you an orange...*boink*"

It's hilarious how much "son of a bitch" is used in English-dubbed Italian movies. It seems like attacking the legitimate paternity of a man in any country with a Latin-derived language is the ultimate put-down

Received my copy from FilmArt yesterday - I was really happy with it, very impressive video/audio. Also very impressed with Mike Malloy's interview with John Saxon, once he gets going he really does come out with some interesting stories and anecdotes - prob the best part of the disc, after the film, of course!

A word about the Micalizzi interview - it's exactly half of the video I sent them so I'm guessing part 2 will be on their next Eurocrime disc, Brothers Till We Die.

D&T Mailorder, Aarron. Great service. Might be worth dropping an email to Paul over at strangevice.co.uk to see if they can stock. They are a good company run by true fans who accept PayPal.

Same here.  ::)

Really top package and a nice touch that the booklet notes were in English as well. Checked some of it and the print looks great.

My only slight quibble and I really hate to mention it on such a thorough job. I played the first ten mins or so In English, even though I'll probably watch it in Italian when I get to it fully and I did notice five audio dropouts. Just wondering if anyone else had noticed or whether it's a player issue?

Yep they are there. I imagine they are there because of the retiming of the English audio. It's common in a lot on fan dubs.
Title: Re: The Cynic, The Rat And The Fist (Umberto Lenzi, 1977)
Post by: Inspector Tanzi on 22 Oct 2012 - 16:51
Funny enough I was just talking to a mate on the phone about the drop outs. I watched the intro as I love the music etc and noticed one there. I was flipping thought the chapters and there was a dropout when Milian said bullshit and at first wondered if it was censored sound so i went to some mouthier scenes and saw that wasn't the case.

I'll probably watch it in Italian with subs though as I've only ever seen it in English the times I've watched it before.

I think we have the answer for your question, Jonny.
The problem with the english audio was, that the licencee delivered us only a very bad copy of it.
So we had the choice...using the (very!) bad one, with constant audio dropouts and partly over many minutes...or to remaster the english audio of the swedish vhs tape.
We took the second option. And yes, it's possible that the tape was the source for different fandubs - and there are many!

Excellent film! Loved Tanzi again in this one too! He didn't lose a bit of his character in this, just continued slapping people off! Merli, Milian and Saxon, can't really go wrong with them.

As good as this film was I still prefer Rome armed to the teeth. But still definitely in top3 of Lenzis films with Rome armed to the teeth and Seven blood-stained orchids.

What they said. Generally I prefer original language plus subs as well but if it stars an actor/actress who has dubbed their own voice, I'll sometimes opt for the English audio. For example, I prefer to watch John Saxon, Henry Silva and Carroll Baker with their own voices and can't get used to watching them in another language.

I find the earlier Franco Nero ones without his voice a little odd.

Yeah it is odd hearing nero with someone elses voice, though the dubber who voiced him in "Confessions of a police captain" was very good i thought ( Not sure who he was?) I also prefer the english dubs especially if it features American actors. Take "Crimebusters" or "The Boss" Henry Silva is in almost every scene in those films making it the only language choice for me.

I reckon it depends on how good the dub voice actors are as to wether i prefer it over subtitles. Saying that i tend to side with dubbing cos im lazy like that.

I find using fandub audio for a legit release is a cop-out, if i shell out cash for a release i expect certain standards , like better quality audio from the version already traded/downloaded.

Martin created this for fans - and without a single penny for his time.

I dont expect any comment from Film Art on this matter , after all fandubbers dont own the elements contained within these dvd's.

But saying that its a fantastic release which will give me many years of pleasure viewing it

Remains to be seen what the transfer is like for this and their impending Shaw Brothers films. 88 have always been very "hit and miss"  with their transfer, but for £8.99 you get what you pay for
