I think when Franco is at his absolute best, then he's really, really good. At the same time I think that when Franco is at his worst, he can put of some truly horrible films. The thing with Franco's filmography is that it's so immense and can be divided into several different periords. I guess we all have one or more periods from his filmography that we prefer over the others. I myself prefer his late 60s and early 70s films. They are all to my great liking and I'm particularly fond of his Harry Alan Towers period. His films from this era are very inspired and polished. Back then he wasn't making around 15 movies a year, and thus he had more time to really work on each individual film.

But for me one of the best things about Franco are his interviews as seen on various dvd releases. He's got to be one of the most loveable and intriguing interviewees I've ever seen. It's always extremely interesting to listen to what he has to say and he's obviously far more intellectual and well-read than what many of his detractors would have you thinking. Simply a great character! Wish I had a crazy, old uncle like him! Just imagine all the colorful family dinners!  ::)

I'm a big fan of Franco's Venus In Furs and have the Blue Underground release which I'm very happy with. I was wondering how the Redemption release measures up, anybody seen it?

I´m an periodical Francophile... the old obsession hits me once in awhile and i´m back on my conviction that noone makes films so totally in my taste as old Jess... For sure he has made a few that not even a mother can like, specially the last couple of decades, the ones from KILLER BARBIES and on is something i´ll save for the very last.... but honestly i allways seem to find something i like in most all of his films, even the all-spanish 80ies detective/erotic/comedys.
Fortunally i have from the start settled for one version of any film and never begun upgrading to dvd when they started to get released, or i would have drowned in Franco-films.
As it is i have 147 films by him, many only on copy, so still missing about ten-fifteen.
Marc; have you managed to get hold of all his films? Even the elusive LABIOS ROJOS and SEX CHARADE??

I have not seen many of his movies.  I just watched three Dr. Orloff movies.

The Awful Dr. Orloff, Dr. Orloff's Monster and Orloff Against The Invisible Man.  The last of which was not even directed by Franco and was actually the most fun.  The Awful Dr. Orloff looked the best though.

I enjoyed them all, but am hoping there is something better later in his body of work.

Hehe! I thought as much! Whenever you decide to sell a rare VHS it's a sure sign that a DVD is on the way

Looking forward to seeing a proper version of THE DEVIL HUNTER.  I've only seen it via an awful awful bootleg.

Unfortunately the UK dvd release of this is best avoided as the usually reliable Anchor Bay have put out a dark, colourless, full frame version that's considerably inferior to the old Redemption vhs.

There's a nice Region 1 NTSC two disc special edition by Blue Underground called the RED LIPS DOUBLE FEATURE that has 1.66:1 anamorphic transfers of  KISS ME MONSTER and TWO UNDERCOVER ANGELS.

For me Jess Franco's films are like the difference between dreaming and sleeping.  some of his films are surreal, trippy and dreamy while others just put you to sleep.

My favorite trippy, surreal, dreamy Franco fims are: VENUS IN FURS; THE AWFUL DR ORLOFF; DIABOLICAL DR. Z; THE SADISTIC BARON VON KLAUS; SUCCUBUS; JUSTINE; SADOMANIA; THE GIRL FROM RIO; EUGENIE; JACK THE RIPPER; COUNT DRACULA; DEVIL'S ISLAND LOVERS; EXORCISM; FACELESS; 99 WOMEN; NIGHT OF THE SKULL; LOVE LETTERS OF A PORTUGUESE NUN; and any film with Soledad Miranda, SHE KILLED IN ECSTACY; VAMPYROS LESBOS; NIGHTMARES and EUGENIE DE SADE.

I only recently watched "She Killed in Ecstasy" and fell immediately in love with Soledad Miranda ;) ;) ;)
Unfortunately she passed away way too early.... :-[

Franco is the guy if you're looking for some quick, weird and sexy movie fun. ::)
