Just saw Jonny's LLL fansub/dub of INVESTIGATION last night.  Looked gorgeous on my upconverting OPPO player through my 40" Sony HD LCD.  ::)

Interesting! Just been perusing www.cannon.org.uk – a UK website that's devoted to the now defunct company owned by Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus. There's a section on the site called 'Cannon Could Have been' linked to a collection of projects that the company was developing but for whatever reason, never materialised. One of them is from a script by Paul Schrader and it's called INVESTIGATION. The film was intended to Al Pacino and Andrei Konchalovsky of TANGO AND CASH fame was slated to direct.

Review of Paul Schrader's INVESTIGATION script

It's safe to say that the writer of the review hasn't seen or even knew about the Petri film.

Obviously, a remake of this film would have been completely unnecessary but with Schrader writing and a younger Pacino acting, I would have certainly watched it. Also, had this been made, it's a safe bet that there would be a legitimate, English-friendly release of Petri's film on DVD now.

It's too bad that being a great film - or even winning an Oscar for best Foreign film - isn't enough.  :-[

...and while I'm on my soapbox. :-*

Where's Criterion, or Eclipse coming out with an English language friendly box-set of the oft negelected auteur?  :-[  Even single releases of his films.  Masters of Cinema, BFI, where are you?

...is anyone listening?  >:(

Yes, a Criterion Petri box was a wish-list for me at another forum. So, yes, my thoughts exactly (squared).

I think he eats (is made to eat) the salt so he can be absolved of his crimes?

I've not got Sky - I have Virgin Media and don't think Simply Movies is broadcast by them.

Great news that this sort of material is getting aired though.  :-X

Appunti si un autore is a 2005 documentary about Elio Petri.

There's a listing on the BFI website about it but no info other than the crew and some interviewees.
