Not to be confused with 1970's Bud Spencer and Terence Hill version of the same name, Sergio Sollima's Il Corsaro Nero stars Kabir Bedi in the eponymous role as Corsaro Nero.  Bedi also starred in Sollima's "Sandokan" miniseries from the same year.  NoShame released this on DVD a while ago, albeit with no English options.  With a soundtrack by Guido & Maurizio De Angelis and Sollima at the helm, this one has piqued my interest.

Anyone seen this?  Was it ever even dubbed into English?

Never seen any of the Italian made Pirate films, I believe Lenzi did a couple too. I'd love to know more about them though.

I've seen the Bud Spencer / Terence Hill one, which was mediocre and lacking in the duo's usual comedic antics.  Lenzi did Sandokan the Great in the 60s with Steve Reeves, which I have but just haven't gotten around to watching yet.  From what I saw of it it seemed closer to a pepulum than a pirate film though.

My dad's really into pirate movies (not the Johnny Depp bs) so I'm trying to dig up obscure ones.  I really enjoy most of Sollima's films, so I may just have to pick this one up.

I have both Lenzi SANDOKAN movies and wrote reviews of them in the peplum/fusto thread. But they are swashbucklers no doubt but they're often lumped in because of the association with Reeves. Both good with the sequel SANDOKAN, THE PIRATE OF MALAYSIA the better of the two.

I recently looked at the Hill/Spencer screener that was sent to me some years back. I remember it being fairly dreadful but I know that the movie faced editing problems before it was released, and it does look tampered with (dig that theme song!). I got the Italian No Shame disc and haven't even looked at it. Will do soon, no doubt.

Also not to be confused with Mario Costa's Errol Flynn-style film of the same name starring Ricardo Montalban and featuring Vincent Price. On the ropey pound store dvd I have the title comes up as 'Gordon, The Black Pirate'. Not exactly a swashbuckler's name...

I very much love the italian pirate films, and this one is the best after the two Sandokan movies made by Sollima also starring Kabir Bedi, in fact they are very similar to this one. There is a english version released on old Swedish rental, it´s a trimmed down version, i believe it was originally a tv-series just like Sandokan. It´s possible that the full version never got english dub.
By the way Mario Costa made another brilliant piratefilm with QUEEN OF THE PIRATES, not a dull moment in that one!

What's the runtime of the Swedish release, magnus?  If it's close to the full runtime, let's get to work on a fandub  ;D

It runs for 94 minutes, so quite a bit edited out, really get´s the tempo up.

ahh, that's too bad, as the IMDB states that the Italian runtime is 126 min.  I'm not so sure about it being a TV series though, as some of the production stills I've seen look pretty big budget, plus the aspect ratio is 2.35, not sure how many tv shows they would have made in scope.

Fulci did some rather violent tv movies that were widescreen correct? I've only seen the trailers for them but I think they were wide.

you might very well be right, and that the trimmed down version is the one for export. it´s clear that a lot of transportscenes (if this is the proper english term?) has been cut out to get up the tempo, things happen all the time without lots of walking through the jungel or rowing boats.
by the way those Fulci tv-films is not much to search out, thery really look cheap, like Lamberto Bava on spare change budget, and in the case of Sweet House of Horror allround quite awful.

The Fulci TV movies were widescreen but they were made in 1989 after all (and ended up never being shown on TV) and the aspect ratio was 1.85:1 and not 2.35:1 like THE BLACK PIRATE. I really can't imagine an Italian TV series from 1976 being in scope. It just sounds very unlikely to me.

125 minutes ought to be the correct length. Mediaset Distribution are offering this for sale and that is the running time they list: http://www.mediasetdistribution.com/releases/detail.php?id=386

I'd love to see that, I enjoy Kabir doing the swashbuckling thing. And that's a great cover.
