Re: THE BIG GUNDOWN.
Koch's release has a strange anomaly, about an hour into the picture; there's a short fragment of the FACCIA A FACCIA score that plays during a shot in which Tomas Milian rides away from the camera, leaving Van Cleef alone in the desert. I wondered if this anomalous piece of music had been inserted by Koch as a 'watermark' of sorts. Does anyone know for sure?

Ben, in reading Vito`s post above, I realized I`d completely forgotten about this. It`s not a big deal, at least to me, but the brief piece of music from Face To Face does play on the Koch Big Gundown disc. Thought I should correct myself, although I`m certain you`ll still be very happy with the set if you pick it up. That`s the only audio glitch in the set that I`m aware of.
Just to reinforce what Andrew said, if I hadn't been so familiar with the film, I doubt that I would have even noticed the short piece of music from FACCIA A FACCIA: it only appears for a couple of seconds, and to be honest it almost fits the scene like a glove--but if you're familiar with the films' scores, it stands out like a sore thumb. However, it certainly wouldn't hamper your enjoyment of the film; it's just a strange anomaly.

Placed my order for both Big Gundown and Face To Face from Explosive Media last week. Love SWs but have not seen them yet, so looking forward to it. My expectations are extremely high, hope i wont be disappointed.

By the way, is the Explosive Media releases uncut? Did not look it up before placing my order, just assumed.

Watching at the minute and have to say that I'm disappointed with the picture quality, the US Blu-Ray of The Grand Duel looked much better.

What an absolutely fucking brilliant film. Without doubt the best Spaghetti Western I have seen after the Leone films. Tomas Milian was superb.

20 Euros is a pretty good price for a set like that (Amazon.de). I'll be ordering a copy this weekend. A Top 20...maybe Top 10 Western for me which I certainly don't mind triple dipping for.

@ Butcher - The longer Italian edition of the film is featured in this set, so no issue with cuts.

You're right, over here Eureka were going to put out a Blu but the elements or whatever weren't good enough so they just released a DVD. I should imagine it's the same transfer.

I'm holding out for the Grindhouse restoration which will smoke this version.

Is there a reason to believe the Explosive Media Big Gundown Blu-Ray isn't from this Sony Restoration?  Ulrich Bruckner was at Sony before founding Explosive Media early this year.

And the restoration was already played in New York in June I think.

About Face to Face:

Yeah hard to imagine they would have used some other transfer for this new disc but I'm sure Eureka didn't filter all the grain away (while Explosive Media did [based on screenshots] and according to German forums it looks worse than the old Koch disc). This new EM disc has English audio track though, I just don't know about the quality compared to the old Japanese release but apparently some part(s) of the track are missing (even though present on the Japanese disc).
