  • Aarrgghh!

It looks like Mya have succeeded again where others have failed and are releasing this under the title HORRIBLE at the end of June.

Great news! 'bout time - this title's been MIA (no pun intended) for too long.

MYA do not have the rights to issue this. I spoke to MGM not long ago.

Just out of interest, did they have the rights to issue FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET then?

Not that i can see. Something very dodgy seems to be going on. It's always been the same in Italy. Wave some money under a lab's nose and anything is possible it seems.

I had an inkling that the Mya release of FOUR FLIES might be dodgy. Considering how hard and tirelessly some very well known people worked to try and release the film, it seemed absurd that a brand new company could pull it off. Maybe they figured that it was worth trying considering there were no legal repercussions after the German guys did it the year before.

Well, I don't care if they paid for the rights or not. I care about having a good-looking print of the film on DVD and I care about the artwork because I don't want shitty-looking covers in my DVD collection! Are they trying to market this as some new horror film or what? Since they are releasing films that appeal to a small market, they could at least use original poster artwork. This has to be the shittiest cover I have seen in a long time!

That's what I've been thinking, the Germans seemed to have gotten away with it, so they probably just tried their luck. Does make some sort of twisted logic... But the Ryko deal? Does a dvd production company like MYA have to prove (in any way) that they own the copyright for whatever film they intend to put out? Or, do they just call Ryko, list a series of titles and say "That's what we're releasing." and just hang up the phone (so to speak) with no checks whatsoever?

Going back to Absurd, I used to have the Italian Shendene VHS released in the late 90's (iirc) so I'm 'assuming' MGM don't own the rights to this film in Italy (?) This bodes well for a decent print, but, of course, whether it's legal or not is another story.

It's funny, with all this talk of torrent sites being so bad... here we have a supposedly 'legit' distributor who may be ripping everyone off. Let's be frank, if they don't own the rights then they are no more at liberty to sell these films than you or me. They're also probably making a decent chunk of cash out of it too with 4 flies (esp)

Odd... just odd.

Re: RYKO

They don't seem to have asked Johnny Legend any questions about his releases.

My big concern is that if a company like MGM decided to enforce its rights to this title, they might crush RYKO which would lead to huge problems for all sorts of legit DVD firms like BU and Severin.

Wouldn't the guilty party be slapped with a cease and desist order before any legal action?
