Poliziotteschi with most giallo influence
« on: 09 Feb 2008 - 15:23 »

Okay, so which Italian crime films bear the most giallo influence or are the biggest genre hybrids? We've discussed this here and there, but let's compile a definitive list. I'll start the ball rolling with:

Blazing Magnum/Una magnum special per Tony Saitta

The Maniac Responsible/...a tutte le auto della polizia

The Perfect Crime/Indagine su un delitto perfetto
(okay, so this isn't really either crime or giallo, but I'm throwing it out there, because it's sure to come up)

The Killers our are Guests/Gli assassini sono nostri ospiti  (Vincenzo Rigo)
Silence the Witness/Il testimone deve tacere  (Giuseppe Rosati)
Who Killed the Prosecutor and Why?/Terza ipotesi su un caso di perfetta strategia criminale (Giuseppe Vari)
Suspected Death of a Minor/Morte sospetta di una minorenne  (Sergio Martino)

What Have They Done to Your Daughters?

Yes, definitely would have said this one myself, along with Sergio Martino's SUSPECTED DEATH OF A MINOR.

...also, there's the French flick, PEUR SUR LA VILLE, (yep, I'm the one-man publicity machine when it comes to this film, but someone has to sing its praises) or FEAR OVER THE CITY as it translates in English. Brilliant Belmondo cop flick with giallo overtones. Checkout my review elsewhere on the site.

SPECIAL KILLERS (1973) with Frederick Stafford and a blonde Femi Benussi has a lot of giallo elements in it and is basically about Stafford trying to find out who murdered his cheating, alcoholic wife (Patty Shepard). Some clues leads him to Benussi, a nightclub performer/fashion boutique owner, who is also mixed up in some blackmail and shady business - hence the crime/police element.

This is very much a giallo/police hybrid in my book so I'm surprised that it's almost never brought up in discussions. Of course, that may have something to do with the fact that it's a pretty bad film that throws its intriguing concept out the window in favor of uninspired, talky melodrama aplenty...

How about Di Leo's Naked Violence? It's a mixture of who-dunnit mystery and cop film.
