Brick Lane (Sharon Gavron, 2007)

Saw this Monica Ali adaptation last night. It's the story of a woman that arrives in London having been sent from Bangledesh for an arranged marriage. Although the film is exquisitely shot and well acted by a cast of mostly unknowns, it never really manages to rise above the quality of the one-off dramas you see on the telly. The film seamed to shy away from thornier issues and you're left feeling that it could have been a lot better if the film had tackled the issues of race and gender head-on.

Definitely a missed opportunity.
