Favourite Umberto Lenzi films
« on: 08 Mar 2008 - 16:11 »

Coming up to nearly 77 years old this year, Umberto Lenzi has directed films covering many genres in a career that started 50 years ago. This gives us over 60 feature films to choose from so take your pick and let us know just which films are your personal favourites from his back catalogue?

In no order for me...

Roma a mano armata (Rome Armed To The Teeth) (1976)
Paranoia (A Quiet Place To Kill) (1970)
Milano odia: la polizia non può sparare (Almost Human) (1974)
L'uomo della strada fa giustizia (Manhunt In The City) (1975)
Napoli Violenta (Violent Naples) (1976)
La banda del gobbo (Brothers 'til We Die) (19878)

To be honest I've not seen any of his War films and it's been so long since I saw his Cannibal films and Gialli that I'd need to see them again to know whether I rate them or not. Be interested to hear people's thoughts on their favourites though...

Ironmaster

I just bought a UK VHS of 'Iron Master' a month or so back (pre-cert on Medusa). It's got probably one of the best pieces of cover art I've ever seen on a video, must scan it sometime.

Never seen the film though, is it really that bad?

Not at all! It's a hugely enjoyable film! Great, fun entertainement from beginning to end, like the majority of Lenzi's films are. Overall, I find his output to be more consistantly engaging than, say, Argento's...

I guess quite a few people got their introduction to Lenzi the same way I did, thorough Cannibal Ferox, Eaten Alive and Nightmare City. Based on those, I didn't have a very high opinion of him, but once I saw his poliziesco and gialli that changed drastically. I like pretty much all his 70's output (still a few I haven't seen) but not too fond of his post 1980 output. Still hoping that somebody might release an english-friendly boxset of his Carroll Baker gialli someday.

Top 10 would look something like this:
So Sweet...So Perverse
A Quiet Place to Kill
Dirty Pictures
Knife of Ice
Seven Blood-Stained Orchids
The Cynic, the Rat & the Fist
Violent Naples
Tough Ones
Manhunt in the City
Almost Human

Has anyone seen 'House of Witchcraft' (La casa del sortilegio) his TV movie from 1989? I've got the Vipco DVD and am thinking of forcing myself to watch it.

I'll give it a watch in the next couple of days then.

How many of Lenzi's films do you reckon you've seen Tanzi?
