Sweeney! (David Wickes, 1976)
« on: 11 Mar 2008 - 08:36 »

Have had the Warner double bill (now out of print, though it was re-issued by Optimum last year) and have meant to get around to watching the flicks for ages, but completely forgot about them... until I read some of Kev Coed's encouraging comments in another thread.

So, last night, I gave the first film a spin and wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. The film has a somewhat limp and convoluted start, but once the premise is set, the film slips into a fast-paced thriller and unlike many films of the genre, it is actually thrilling. There are some nice set-pieces, some gratuitous breast-shots and some choice lines. My only critisicm is that the addition of some spicy language would have been very welcome. That said, this is a great, British crime flick. I shall try and watch the second one tonight...

Funnily enough I got the Warners/Studio Canal double feature DVD last week. I much prefer this one to the sequel, laughed out loud when Lynda Bellingham (the OXO mother) was getting plyed with drink and drugs...

I didn't even realise it was Bellingham until I saw her name in the end credits. And she gets them out  :-\

Ha. Yes, she is.  :-*

SPOILER!

There were some choices scenes of violences in this, not least the one in which the two bent coppers kill the gangsters in the scrapyard.

Just noticed inside the DVD cover there's some chapter listings with some quality titles...

1. The Murder
2. Get To Work
3. Fulham Works Punch Up  ::)

There are also some pleasing reproductions of the original posters - too bad they didn't use them for the coverart.

The film has a somewhat limp and convoluted start,

Liesssss.......

This might possibly be the greatest film ever made. It's got it all. The Oxo bird with her tits out. The Nescafe bird with her tits out. John Thaw driving pissed out of his mind. Cracking punch-ups. A copper getting shot in the head. A high mortality rate for all cast members. And what an ending!!

I think the most I've ever paid for a poster is for the quad for this.

£156. It's not a bad price for that poster actually. They have gone for more and my one is in absolutely tip-top condition.

Well said, Kev. Great film and thanks for the recommendation before. Lovely poster that, mate. Very jealous!

One of my better attempts at photography, I think.

There was an Italian poster for it up on Ebay a couple of years ago. I did bid on it but it went up a bit higher than I wanted to pay (it wasn't that good a poster). It would be interesting to know how the film did over there as it has a lot in common with their films of that time.
