Favourite Lucio Fulci films
« on: 16 Mar 2008 - 03:04 »

I know people here love lists, and Fulci has made nearly 60 films as well.

FOUR OF THE APOCALYPSE
DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING
THE BLACK CAT
CONTRABAND
MASSACRE TIME
CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD

A LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN
DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING
ONE ON TOP OF THE OTHER
MASSACRE TIME
THE BEYOND
CAT IN THE BRAIN

I like most of his other films made pre-1985. Putting it politely, his later work is very, very patchy.

ZOMBIE and THE BEYOND used to be my favorites when I was a little younger. I still like both of them quite well but with time I've grown more and more fond of CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, and it is now my favorite Fulci film of all time. It's a great, weird and very personal film. I really love it!

I also love DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING - Fulci's best giallo!

THE NEW YORK RIPPER and MANHATTAN BABY both have several impressive moments but they are pretty flawed overall. I quite like THE BLACK CAT, however, but largely because of its great cast.

I find LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN and THE PSYCHIC to be okay but somewhat overrated - they are both far, far away from being among my favorite gialli.

I'm generally not a big fan of Fulci's remaining films. THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, CONQUEST, MURDERROCK and CAT IN THE BRAIN are absolutely appalling and I have no desire to suffer through them again.

As you can tell, I'm not that big a fan of Fulci. He was able to turn out a few excellent films but was very erratic. For every good film he made, he seemed to make four bad ones...

I think so too, in fact I think it`s his best film period. I like LIZARD quite a bit, though it doesn`t have as much impact once you know the twist. I can appreciate the way THE PYSCHIC is put together, but I find it a bit dull and uninvolving.

THE NEW YORK RIPPER is such a mean-spirited, misanthropic film...damn I love it. Maybe I don`t watch it often but every now and then it`s the only one that`ll fit the bill.

ZOMBIE has the most rewatchability of his zombie/supernatural horrors for me.

I think MASSACRE TIME is by far the best of his westerns, seems somewhat underrated even by sw fans.

BEATRICE CENCI is quite good as well, and THE EROTICIST is a surprisingly funny film if a bit too long.

I like THE BLACK CAT mainly for the cat itself, one of Fulcis best characters I think.

Also i'd add SILVER SADDLE which I saw recently and loved it, it had some really impressive action and a tiny bit of comedy, nice emotional soundtrack as well.

I agree.  The cat in Fulci's film actually seemed to have sinister intent.  It wasn't just thrown into frame.

Yeah the title of the film actually delivers...

Non si Sevizia un Paperino & Beatrice Cenci are Fulci's masterpieces to me. And Zombi 2 & L'Aldila' his horror masterpieces.

In order of preference...
1)Non si Sevizia un Paperino
2)Beatrice Cenci
3)Zombi 2
4)L'Aldila'
5)Sette Note in Nero
6)Quattro Dell'Apocalisse
7)Una Lucertola con la Pelle di Donna
8)Paura Nella Citta' dei Morti Viventi
9)Quella Villa Accanto al Cimeterio
10)Una Sull'Altra
11)La Pretora (Edwige Fenech at her hottest)
12)Lo Squartatore di New York
13)Tempo di Massacro

okay my top 10 has changed through the years with this guy (it was ZOMBI 2 that made me a Eurocult fan but I find it a tad stale now), but I'll try to qualify the current list:

1. CONTRABAND - excellent directorial style and exciting action scenes.  Lots of interesting camera movement and a good cast.  The story sucks and has a dull first third, but it picks up.

2. NEW YORK RIPPER - easily the sleaziest slasher movie ever.  Very well-shot and downbeat... only the bad dubbing and inappropriate main theme song harms it.  Great pace too.

3. HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY - lame movie up to the last 10 minutes, which are pure horror movie GOLD.

4. MASSACRE TIME - takes some getting used to, but ends up being one of the most impressively shot Spaghetti Westerns of all.

5. CONQUEST - yeah it's dreadful but I love it.  Totally different from any of the other Conan ripoffs, supremely brutal and gory, and so dreamlike and weird it's a class all of its own.

6. THE BEYOND - his best-made gore movie, though it is awfully dull in-between murders.  The cinematography and his direction are top-notch, especially during the tense hospital zombie climax.

7. ZOMBI 2 - my only problem is that the climax doesn't go long enough.  He has some quality kills and zombie action, just not enough to justify such a slow buildup through the rest of the movie.  The best part about the thing is the music by Fabio Frizzi - truly one-of-a-kind.

8. DONT TORTURE A DUCKLING - I'm not a big giallo fan and get bored by talky thrillers really easily, but this one had me.  Excellent cast too.
