Spasmo (Umberto Lenzi, 1974)
« on: 26 Mar 2008 - 23:45 »

I have heard that the Dutch Filmworks DVD release of Spasmo has better picture quality than the US Shriek Show disc. Can anyone confirm this?

I haven't seen the Shriek Show disc, but the Dutch release looks pretty good, I can imagine it looking better than the one by Shriek Show. Some soundtrack-problems though - there's a minutes-long part that has a rhythmic clicking in the background. No extra's, not even a menu.

I don't recall there being any issues with the US disc when I watched it.

I think he means there's issues with the Dutch DVD mate. At least that's how it reads to me.

Yep - can't say anything about the Shriek Show - never seen it.

The audio-issues of the Dutch disc are not that big of a problem - just mentioned them 'cause they might be if you're annoyed by that sort of thing - didn't bother me much.

I was replying to Ben, mate. I'm pretty sure the quality of the SS disc was pretty decent for a film of SPASMO's age and obscurity and not something that could be improved on greatly, IMO.

I'll pick up the SS disc soon. At least it's got a Lenzi interview.

I would still like to see the George Romero directed scenes for the US version.

Just watched the SS disc this evening and noticed a rhythmic clicking on the soundtrack at around the 47 minute mark. Sounds similar to a scratched vinyl record, only lasts for about 2 minutes though.

Does this sound similar to the audio problem on the Dutch DVD Wim?

Yep - sounds like that - same master's been used, then. I've read that the US disc is interlaced, so if you're fussed about that, the Dutch disc would be a better option, as it's in progressive PAL. The Dutch disc misses out on all the extra's - no interview, no trailer - there even isn't a menu screen. I love that trailer - have it on another Shriek Show - Solange, I think. It's cheap here - costs about 5 euro's. Been about a year since I've last seen it in the shops, though.

Thats why I was a bit dissapointed with the movie.. because the trailer was so good, I don't usually watch it beforehand though. I'll see it again.

I like Spasmo - its script is a mess, but for me, somehow it works as a hallucinogenic dreamscape - looks good, too.

You nailed it there when you said the script is a mess Wim! Watching it yesterday for the first time in a long time I was quite taken aback by how little I could understand about the first 20 minutes of the film!

It was all over the place, one minute they found Suzy Kendall on the beach, the next they're all friends and having drinks on a yacht... Next thing Hoffman's shaving his beard off ready for action with Kendall, a man comes through the bathroom window...

My head was spinning so much I stopped trying to keep track and just went with it.  :-\
