So, are there any fans of this pair of AIP comic-horror films from the early 1970s?

The first film - The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) is simply suberb in my view. The script is superb and all of the production looks good while Vincent Price is perfectly cast while Brit comic Terry-Thomas gives an outstanding performance as one of the victims. One of my favourite films and certainly recommended - a great one for rewatching again and again!

I saw Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) for the first time this last week and was rather disappointed. It has a lot of flaws - the script requires so many gaps in logic that it becomes simply absurd by the end, Robert Quarry as the other main character to Phibes just never has the presence to carry the film while Terry-Thomas and Peter Cushing are simply wasted in throw-away cameos. The lack of budget clearly shows the in over-ambitious production. Not recommended.

The MGM R1 or R2 discs are fine although sadly lacking in extras - particularly since the director is still with us (and will hopefully be present at a screening of both films at the Bradford Film Festival this year).

THE ABOMINABLE DR PHIBES is one of my all-time favourites, along with THEATRE OF BLOOD - I can't remember the last time I watched DR PHIBES RISES AGAIN though... I'll have to dig it out. I'd really like to see Fuest's THE FINAL PROGRAMME as well. As a teenage Michael Moorcock fan I must have seen it at some point, but I reallly can't remember anything about it.

The first one is great, I got both for 99 cents each probably 11 years ago on old Orion VHS tapes.  Joseph Cotton's pretty good in it too.

Love the first one. Went into it completely blind and fell in love with it straight off.

There'll be a double bill of both films, in 35mm, at this June's 'Fantastic Films Weekend' at Bradford. Director Robert Fuest will be there to introduce them and have a Q&A session afterwards.

I'm definitely going to be there for that, love these films.

I think both films are great but my favourite Price film where people get killed in inventive ways is THEATRE OF BLOOD

I remember reading somewhere a while back that the scene in THEATRE OF BLOOD where Vincent Price bursts in on the Critics Circle was shot in what's now Jeffery Archer's penthouse flat... you can see it to the left of the Aztec-style MI5 building if you're heading south over Vauxhall Bridge.

Paul Simonon from The Clash wrote Archer a letter not too long back asking if he'd mind letting him paint the views from his apartment and Archer agreed to it.

There's that much great stuff coming out at the moment I just can't keep up. I've already got these on DVD, and no doubt these new BLUs blow them out of the water, but I simply don't have the room nor the time to watch them all.


It's hard enough trying to keep up with films I haven't seen!


Is anyone else in the same quandary?
