Which European country is King of the cult film?
« on: 15 May 2008 - 18:22 »

Just wondered who people think is the best European national cinema in terms of producing cult films and how people feel about the strength of the European cult film against American Cult films?

I would agree with you. Italy has a proven track record with cult films. Bruno Mattei was great. I loved the cover art of his movies.

Does any one disagree and think another country is better?

Without a shadow of a doubt :P

Best westerns, best crime, best thriller (giallo), the jury finds Italy the king of Euro cult cinema ::)

Hard one for me to reply to as I've not watched enough American Cult movies to warrant a fair answer.

Of course I love the Spaghetti westerns as well Sergio Leone is an absolute legend. I think it is pretty safe to say that Italy will be the hands down winner.

So if you were to do a top 5 who would make the grade?

Thats fine. I would say that i have seen more American than European cult films any way. So i can understand the difficulty.

Yeah, I was toying with putting France above Spain but I recently watched 'Eyes Without A Face' and though it was a really decent film it just didn't do it for me like the recent viewing of 'Tombs Of The Blind Dead' did.

I guess it's just the way my personal tastes are this month, it could all change by the end of the week.

Italy and GB would still be 1st and 2nd though.  :D

I have not seen either of those films. Will probably have to check them out soon 'Tombs of the Blind Dead' sounds interesting. My tastes do tend to change from time to time. Usually it depends on what mood  am in and whether I can be bothered to read subtitles or not. Italy and GB are secure at 1 and 2.

You should definitely check both of those films out. 'Eyes Without A Face' (Les Yeux Sans Visage) is a classic of French horror cinema and has had a great DVD release from Criterion. 'Tombs Of The Blind Dead' is top stuff and can be had for quite a reasonable price in a 3 film box set with its sequels from either Anchor Bay UK or Blue Underground.
