I haven't seen any of his films and have no intention of doing so to be honest.

I wasn't exactly much of a fan myself, but recently I came across "Die Bitteren Tränen..." when it was on TV, and I was stunned by the film's visual beauty even though the subject matter didn't interest me the least.
At best, Fassbinder is in a line with Sternberg and Sirk, while his less stylized films tend to bore me to death. Havig said that, "Querelle", probably his most stylized film, also ends up on the boring side, for me at least.
