I have literally received the new 2-disc Minerva/Raro IO CALIGOLA DVD in the post from Italy today. It contains the Italian cut of the film (including the extended version of the killing machine scene), the standard American 'Uncut' version containing the hardcore, and about 20 minutes of deleted scenes which I assume aren't in the Italian cut but are in the other versions. Oh and there's a nice glossy 24 page booklet in Italian.
This makes 5 distinct edits of Caligula I now possess. This Italian edit, the 3 in the UK Imperial edition and the one shown on Channel 4 during its simultaneous broadcast of the opening night of FilmFour.
Has anyone seen the briefly available Guccione cut that was available to buy online?
i didn't release that there was a trailer for a mock Caligula re-make. It's here:
Caligula seems to me as the ultimate fan edit project. If anyone is interested how you would go about such a task, along with a painstaking analysis on what's present on the recent DVD releases, then take a gander at this analysis by Alexander Tuschinski which can be found here:http://www.alexander-tuschinski.de/resources/CaligulaReconstructionAnalysisAlexanderTuschinski.pdf
There's also an interview he conducted with Tinto Brass:
There are a few attempts at restoration of scenes on the internet:
Proculus vs. Killing Machine
Harem of Monsters
Journey to Capri
If you haven't yet picked up Arrow's 4-disc Imperial Edition yet then I suggest you do so. Amazon are selling it for 7-95 GBP. A real bargain.
