I'd be interested to see a review that compares the Severin release with the Sazuma one. I can't see any need to double dip at the moment.

Actually that'd be triple dip as I have the Japanese DVD too!

According to the reviewer at 10K Bullets, they look to be the same -- save for the Severin version is progressive (vs. interlaced).

Cool, still no mention that the Sazuma DVD comes with a bonus CD of the - still otherwise unavailable - soundtrack.

Just noticed when re-reading the 10k Bullets review that people are still confusing the director of this film with the Director of MONDO CANE. I thought that had been cleared up ages ago.

10K Bullets is often very good at covering DVDs, but their regular reviewer has a peculiar style that makes me think his keyboard has no comma key.  There are often grammatical mistakes as well as small factual errors in the reviews.  There was one write up for I think a Ken Anger DVD that started "Kenneth Anger is one of the most influential directors of the 21st century..."  You know you're off to the wrong foot when the writer gets the century wrong!

That said, I regularly check them for their run downs on current releases and they have a generous database of reviews, I'm very happy to have the site there despite the small issues.

I have the Sazuma DVD but I haven't a clue how to go about finding out if it's interlaced or progressive. It looks very nice indeed on my TV though  :'(

It also looked very, very nice on my Sony 40" LCD played on an upconverting OPPO 981 DVD player a few days ago.    Plus you get the English and Italian audio, the score on a separate disc, a 30 minute interview with Lovelock in a nice looking digipak housed in a box, not to mention the "Let's Rock with Ray" easter egg, a video of Lovelock's Place for the Landing, in which Ray simulataneously channels Bob Dylan and Lou Reed, to create his own unique vocal stylings.    The easter egg is found by clicking on Ray's viasge on the extras' screen.

Horrors.dvd (see link below) says that the transfer is progressive:

"The progressive transfer makes for an impressive sharpness and clarity too, those many slow-motion sequences looking almost too real for comfort."

Ragardless, the Sazuma disc's transfer looks pretty damn fine to me. 

The bonus disc (CD) includes the original score by Roberto Pregadio.

Thanks, both. Although the Severin disk is imminent, I think I'm probably going to pick this one.

As for progressive scan, I've not especially knowledgeable on the subject but do know that the early (American) No Shame releases - which were extravagantly praised at the time of release - always looked soft and blurry to me. I think this is because they are interlaced and I was watching them with a progressive scan player and a HDMI cable.
