I'm looking for some (any!) info on this oddity I stumbled across on the videoarcheologia website:

http://www.videoarcheologia.it/html/it/itb/sch_d002.asp

(Scroll down a little to see the Italian betamax cover)

What I'm curious to know about is the Riz Ortolani score... I've not delved much into Italian soundtracks but the s/track to Cannibal Holocaust was one that really stuck with me. I wonder how this compares?

I know Italian companies worked with Chinese film production teams but I can't think of any Japanese/Italian collaborations?

Here's the imdb link

Seem to remember Lefteris' posting on another forum that this is where the mondo footage in Mattei's HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD came from.It also features some of the music from SO SWEET SO PERVERSE and SEVEN BLOODSTAINED ORCHIDS.

Yeah, pretty much. Mattei had a field day with this. And it's pretty interesting and well shot.

Think I got the Italian copy somewhere...

Well shot as you say but a very dark/morbid film, not something you'd stick on to cheer yourself up. :-\

It has recently been put out on DVD by Retrofilm (of FOUR FLIES notoriety)

http://shop.dtm.at/product_info.php?products_id=26077

and by ESP, basically a no-name company, sporting a cover that I dare you not to laugh at:

No English options on either disc, though, I am afraid.

So, is this one as gory as the hype would suggest and how much of it is actually real?

There's a couple of gory scenes which i have no doubt were faked for the camera but the majority of the ritual and funeral footage appears to be genuine enough.
This review of the German dvd goes into a bit more detail:
