Creating Fan Dubs - A place to start? (Mac)
« on: 03 Feb 2009 - 07:11 »

Within the next two months I intend getting a new Mac with Final Cut Pro. With it, I hope to finally start making my own versions of films on DVD ie marrying the anamorphic Italian DVD of Liliana Cavani's BEYOND THE DOOR with the English audio from a VHS copy.

While I'm familiar with FCP, this has always been editing my own footage from DV, so I have never imported anything from another source. Also, my current FCP system is quite old, and I have never really used a decent DVD authoring programme.

Can anyone recommend a good site that might offer some tips? If I am going to the effort I want/hope the final product to stand the up relatively well and not to eventually have to be upgraded (for example, the copy I originally start editing from to be non-anamorphic).

If you need any help, drop me a line. I take it you already have editing skills and are familiar with DVD authoring and encoding?

Apologies for the late reply.

Here's the snag - I do have editing skills but I'm not too clued into DVD authoring and encoding. My current editing system is an iMac dating from 2000. I bought it second hand a few years back and had to maximise the ram and remove everything - including any DVD burning programmes - so the system could run FCP 6. Any films I've made go onto DV or Beta. So before I go much further I really want to know more about making DVDs. Are there any "beginners guides to..." sites anyone can recommend?

I use Final Cut Studio - you get some great manuals with the software, which I have had to read through at great length.

There are also some great tutorials here:
