Arrow (UK)

I notice that the Shameless forum has now changed and now the header now also includes 'Arrow's Masters of Giallo'. What's that all about? Intriguing.

Has anybody told them that only one of those titles is a giallo?

And that all three have been readily available for years?

Well HOUSE has never been released uncut here before, and I don't think MACABRE has ever been released in the UK on DVD.

I take your point, although anyone browsing the UK arm of Amazon could have picked up uncut versions of these films long before now. I just think it's a shame to see companies investing resources in releasing films that are already readily available. Whatever next: another Torso?

Why not? If another TORSO is what it takes to cover the costs of a potentially loss-making LIBIDO (to pluck a title out of the air) then I'm all for it. The market for an uncut HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY is far greater than any potential sales for, say, NAKED GIRL KILLED IN THE PARK. Be realistic; we're a minority audience and, considering the extra costs involved in releasing a DVD in the UK, we shouldn't expect any company to dive into the deep end just to satisfy our wants.

Kevin, I understand the model you describe, and if it applies here, best of luck to all concerned. I just find it hard to believe that there's still a market for relatively obscure films that have already had numerous dvd releases. It's 2009 and broadband is common place. I realise that impulse purchases happen - that people are attracted (or not) to packages that catch their eye in HMV - but I'm sceptical as to whether they happen enough to justify more editions of familiar cult films. I suppose we don't know anything about these releases yet, and it may be that we can look forward to unprecedented quality, interesting extras and beautiful packaging . . . maybe.

I hope I'm wrong, btw, and that in six months time we're discussing Arrow's release of Libido rather than the demise of this line. I think they'd stand a better chance if they kicked off with something like The Washing Machine, though.

I agree with Kevin - something like HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY will clean up on UK DVD - it's never had an uncut DVD release here, so the cover's going to be plastered with flashes drawing potential viewers too it. Us film-savvy types are a very small minority in the market. Mainstream horror fans who know naff-all about Italian genre cinema would be the intended target market for this new release...
