I didn't get to the show in the end, does anyone know if the 'Mark of the Devil' was a film print or just a DVD. I used to attend every year, but after 2008 when half the screenings seemed to be DVDs, I was rather disappointed - not worth £6 just to watch a commercially available DVD being blown up far beyond its resolution limit.

While I agree that the image isn’t always perfect when you see a DVD projected, it’s the atmosphere that sells it to me. There’s nothing quite like watching an old classic in a room packed full of like-minded folk.

I paid £13 for two tickets to see THE LIVING DEAD AT THE MANCHESTER MORGUE on Sunday night. Emailed Tony Earnshaw on Friday just to check about the source print and he emailed back to say it would be shown from a DVD. Not even from Blu-ray.

I rang the box office to ask for a refund only to be told me that they don't do refunds.

I sucked it up and lost £13. No way was I driving 40 miles (80 mile round trip), spending money on refreshments etc to watch a DVD. No way. I really don't give a monkeys about the atmosphere, frankly the atmosphere would have a been a touch grim if I'd got there and found out about it being a DVD show as the film started.

This has seriously soured my view of this festival and next year I'll be wanting a full list of the source prints for each show before I book any tickets.

They should definitely let people know in advance in order for them to make their choice. As I said, it doesn't bother me but I can totally see your point-of-view and there should definitely be a lot more transparancy prior to an even likes this.

It certainly should be made crystal clear as to how the film is being shown. Foolishly I presumed that because MANCHESTER MORGUE was being shown in the museum's largest screen it would have been 35mm, I can't recall a film being shown digitally in that screen in all the years I've been attending.

Friday morning I was looking at the listings on the site and noticed that print sources had been added to the film listings...

HORROR EXPRESS
Dir. Eugenío Martin, 1973
GB/Spain, 88 mins,
Cast: Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Alberto de Mendoza, Silvia Tortosa, Julio Peña, Ángel del Pozo, Helga Liné, Juan Olaguivel and Telly Savalas

NMeM Archive print.

The Giant Spider Invasion
Cert: (adv 15)
Dir. Bill Rebane, 1975
USA, 80 mins,
Cast: Steve Brodie, Barbara Hale, Alan Hale Jr., Robert Easton

NMeM Archive print.

Then I get to MANCHESTER MORGUE...

The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue
Cert: (18)
Dir. Jorge Grau , 1974
Spain, 85 mins,
Cast: Ray Lovelock, Christine Galbo, Arthur Kennedy, Aldo Massasso

Courtesy of Optimum Releasing.

This set bells ringing and prompted me to email. It's obvious to me that they are afraid of saying on the site that it's from a DVD and skirt over this by just saying who the distributor is. Maybe hoping that no one will notice?

Maybe no one cares? It seems Tim, Gary and I certainly do.

And me! I'd have been majorly fucked off to drive to Manchester from Swansea just to watch a DVD; especially when I've got the Blu-Ray in the house.

i couldn't agree more with jonny and kev..
screw the atmosphere, i'd talked myself out of a day pass for sunday, as i fancied robocop and videodrome on the big screen, were they also dvd's someone was taking off they're shelf that morning??
and as jonny said not even blueray.. that may have been worth it
i've been before with jonny to bradford to see other films and had planned to save up next year and possibly go the whole event if not maybe a couple of days... i'll be giving it serious reconsideration
i wonder how many people were sat there thinking, £6.50 per ticket, petrol, parking other refreshments and i'm watching a dvd??
i'm sure they knew when they announced the line up what the source elements for each film were going to be  :(

screw the atmosphere,

Whilst I've nothing against the odd DVD screening at an allnighter or in a venue such as the places the Duke Mitchell film nights are held at (pubs/bars) I do take exception to a cinema such as the Pictureville in Bradford, a cinema David Puttnam called "The best cinema in Britain"

i thought the dvd projection was what the smaller screen was for..
it is a shame with digital projection, this lazy approach of showing dvds instead of obtaining a print is going to be an unfortunate future trend at festivals.
I am just glad jonny found out before we'd gone all that way
