Dracula 3D (Dario Argento, 2012)
« on: 14 May 2010 - 07:52 »

Yep, you read it right. Argento is making an adaptation of Bram Stoker's oft-retrodden vampire tome and is doing it in 3D. Filming will commence in Italy this coming January and according to "Argento expert" Alan Jones the director intends to make a faithful version.

Sorry, but I'm really not stoked (pardon the pun). The story has been done countless times before and Argento's recent track record leaves more than a lot to be desired. Why on Earth did he not do FRANKENSTEIN instead? There hasn't been a decent FRANKENSTEIN film in years and his proposed retool from the 70s (which I'm pretty sure he collaborated on with Luigi Cozzi) was supposed to transpose the events of Mary Shelley's novel to Nazi Germany and sounds way more interesting that another round with the Count...

I still need to see Giallo! lol

I watched Arrow's release of Opera this week (cracking DVD BTW!!), and it reminds me how good Argento once was. I always get a shimmer of hope with his recent films. I really liked Sleepless, Hitchcock and Cardplayer were laughable (mainly due to budget and dodgy dubbing reasons IMO) but I enjoyed both. MOT, more of an excuse to show gore than anything else, but again i don't dislike it.

I'm crossing fingers that he does right. I hope it isn't like his other "classic tale" Phantom, i thought that was dreary yawner.

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA was utter shit and I count it as his worst, along with MOTHER OF TEARS.

Hehe, straight to the point.  ::)

I was more disappointed with MOT, it could have and bloody should have been an epic!

The worst thing about MOTHER OF TEARS is the fact that it was made as a sequel to SUSPIRIA and INFERNO. Had it been written as a stand-alone piece I’d have been a lot more forgiving. There’s just no comparison and although everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I find it really baffling that the film has quite a few defenders.

Aarron – Neither GIALLO or DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK? are great, but both are watchable.

I think any allusion to the fetishes of other forum members should be left off the boards  :-\

If he made a really weird or stylistically unusual Dracula flick it could be quite interesting.  A faithful adaption with bog standard gore and solemn acting (which he doesn't excel at) might be as shithouse as PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, as Paul suggested.  I'll keep an eye out but he really needs to push the boundaries a bit rather than being just another horror director.  His recent stuff hasn't been quite 'Argentoesque' enough for me and it's a bit of a shame.

I agree,i don't really see the interest of a "faithful" adaptation...a gritty, raw update like John Carpenter"'s "Vampires","Martin" or "Near dark" would be more interesting,IMO.

Ha,Tinto Brass is also directing a new Caligula in 3D! :-\:

I wouldn't - it was still appalling regardless!

Not excited by the Dracula film one bit sadly - fully expecting a pile of pants!  :-[
