Nothing But the Night (Peter Sasdy, 1973)
« on: 02 Sep 2010 - 06:12 »

The only production of Christopher Lee's Charlemagne Productions, NOTHING BUT THE NIGHT will be released on DVD in the US by Scorpion Releasing.  I haven't seen this in some time but I remember it being fairly grim with some disturbing bits.  I'm trying to track down a copy of the source novel (which was not published in the US).  The film has had previous English friendly releases in Germany, Italy, and Japan.

I'm pretty sure I've never seen this one. Sounds interesting though so I'll be looking out for the Scorpion release.

That's AND SOON THE DARKNESS.

I used to have a US tape release of the film titled THE DEVIL'S UNDEAD (the actual title on the print, not video-generated).

You really need to see this sir (I could swear I bought my old pre-cert from you).
Some great scenes of Diana Dors romping around a windy island, and a lovely outdoor 70's Halloween bonfire.
I know you're a big fan of Keith Barron; and I'm happy to lend it to you in exchange for your Duty Free boxed set.

I've been reading the original novel.  The movie follows it closely for the most part (although I haven't seen the movie in some time - I used to have the Monterey Video release under the title THE DEVIL'S UNDEAD - the title on the print, not a video burn).

Thought I'd post up the cover to the Scorpion disc seeing as it's now announced for October. I've heard the German release isn't too great so I'm quite glad about this one.

Seems the Scorpion disc is a bit of a let down....I'll stick with my MGM print from TV ( which despite being full screen looks very nice ).

Are there any reviews of it around?

Yeah, I saw that post from bgart. He's got a good eye. That review sounds okay and no major complaints at 10k bullets too so in the scope of DVD releases I think I'll still pick it up eventually. Does anyone actually have the German release?

Just finished watching the Scorpion DVD and I'm totally fine with it. For the majority I think it looks pretty good and very natural. Some of the darker scenes and the opening suffer  a little but overall I'd personally recommend it to anyone, especially as it's so cheap. Picked it up new for around £7.50 from Amazon marketplace.

Short of the highly unlikely event of someone throwing a load of money at it and restoring from the negative, if it's even available, I can't see it looking much better.
